View Full Version : Football Why do we always have to watch Detroit on Thanksgiving?

The worst team in the NFL for many years now still gets a prime spot during Thanksgiving. What's the deal? Why can't we start spreading it around to other teams?

I hate Dallas as much as the next NFL fan but at least they usually give us a competative game year in and year out. Detroit hasn't really given us (on average) a competative game since the Barry Sanders days.

I agree that maybe the NFL needs to spread this around. But Detroit and Dallas would have simultanious coniptions if we tried to take these games away.

Detroit game should be a snoozer unless they pull something out of thier collective asses and play football.

I'll never forget Dave Krieg hitting Herman Moore for a long TD against the Bills on the second play of the game off of a flea flicker play, and watching Wayne Fontes do the fat man happy dance on the sideline. Would have choked me up, if I were a Lions fan.

Some insight on the "tradition" and my comments, from my Blog http://imoicouldbewrong.blogspot.com/ Tuesday, November 25, 2008
Thanksgiving Football..always a Turkey.
As we settle into our rest after we enjoy or have enjoyed our Thanksgiving meals ( depending on your family traditions and time zones), we choke down our second serving of "turkey", our Thanksgiving football games. I'm not sure as to exactly when the Lions and Cowboys signed that contract with the Devil(or TV contracts) that subjects as to the exclusivity of watching their games. But according to history it goes like this, the Lions have hosted a game every year since 1934, and the Cowboys since 1966. The Lions started it as a gimmick to get fans to go to Lions games (I'm not sure what they do now, possibly gunpoint). The games are long and usually boring affairs, not engaging to either pedestrian fans nor die hard fans. The Lions are usually out of the playoff hunt this late into the season. And the Cowboys are most generally scheduled against less talented teams. However there have been acceptions to the rule:In the 1976 Thanksgiving match up between the Lions and the Buffalo Bills, the Bills put forth one of the best and performances in Thanksgiving history. With running back O.J. Simpson set the league record for most rushing yards in a single game, with 273. Despite Simpson's record-setting performance, the Bills lost the game, 27-14. Some of the games have been infamous for other reasons. In 1993, the Cowboys led the Dolphins 14-13 with just seconds remaining in a snow-filled Texas Stadium. Miami's Pete Stoyanovich attempted a game winning 40 yard field goal that was blocked by the Cowboys' Jimmie Jones. Dick Enberg of NBC proclaimed "The Cowboys will win." However, Cowboys defensive lineman Leon Lett chased the ball and touched it, giving the Dolphins a chance to regain possession, and then kick a much shorter field goal to take an improbable 16-14 victory. Becoming to this point the largest "turkey" on record. Judging by this years offerings, perhaps "leftovers" would be more appetizing. The AFC leading Titans will toy with, and eventually devour the Lions, by at least halftime. Do yourself a favor take a nap and digest your meal , it's bound to be more productive. Then Cowboys will battle to Seahawks, this might have been a nice "welter" weight match had Romo and Hassleback stayed injured. But with Romo back, the Cowboys are back in form and based on that and Hasselbacks performance last weekend his too will be the usual snooze-fest. Our newly added third game is no more exciting, with the Cardinals playing the Eagles. Warner is in top form and against anyone else in the NFC but the Giants the Cards are extremely ready for the last furlong of the season. A recently benched McNabb is tapped to start, but the Cardinals defense should make easy work of this lumbering offense and struggling defense. Hopefully, the game won't be an overtime event, McNabb might step out before it's over to grab some dessert, as he hasn't grabbed the concept of the highly complex Pro overtime rules. We can always look forward to the bestowing of the "Galloping Gobbler", replacing the Turkey Leg given out to the games top preformers. Anyway, have fun, eat, sleep, and be merry. Unfortunately, the season is almost over. Fortunately, "Turkey Day" football is once a year.

They should have Dallas vs Detroit as the Fox game every year, and then the best matchup on CBS that is picked ahead with flex scheduling. That way, all the "tradition" is kept intact, Dallas gets a 15 game regular season with one gimme, and everyone is happy. But nooooooooo, that makes too much sense.
