KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (2-10)
AT
DENVER BRONCOS (7-5)

REGULAR SEASON GAME #13
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2008 – 3:05 PM (CENTRAL)
INVESCO FIELD AT MILE HIGH – DENVER, COLORADO

BROADCAST INFORMATION
CBS Regional Coverage - KCTV-5 (CBS in Kansas City) - Play-by-play: Bill Macatee - Color Commentator: Steve Beuerlein

THE MATCH-UP

Kansas City travels to Denver for its final AFC West road contest of the year at INVESCO Field at Mile High on Sunday. The Chiefs registered a 33-19 win at Arrowhead (9/28) in their first meeting of the season with the Broncos, handing Denver its initial loss of the season. Kansas City registered a +3 turnover differential in that contest as RB Larry Johnson racked up a season-high 198 rushing yards and LB Derrick Johnson earned AFC Defensive POW honors.

The Chiefs are coming off a 20-13 win at Oakland (11/30) after becoming the first squad in NFL history to register six consecutive road wins vs. the Raiders. Kansas City allowed a season-low 13 points and permitted a season-low 271 yards of total offense, while QB Tyler Thigpen notched his initial win as an NFL starter. TE Tony Gonzalez enjoyed a 100-yard performance for the second straight contest, while RB Larry Johnson had 92 rushing yards and one TD.

Kansas City is seeking back-to-back victories for the first time since doing it vs. Cincinnati (10/14/07) and at Oakland (10/21/07). The Chiefs will be striving for a regular season sweep of the Broncos for the first time since 2000. Among AFC West squads, the Chiefs have gone the longest stretch without a sweep of Denver. San Diego won four straight against Denver from 2006-07, while Oakland most recently accomplished a sweep of the Broncos in 2002.

The Broncos currently reside in the top spot in the AFC West standings with a 7-5 mark. After starting the season at 3-0, Denver is 4-5 in its last nine outings. The Broncos are coming off a decisive 34-17 win at the N.Y. Jets (11/30). Kansas City is still seeking to secure its initial victory at INVESCO Field as the Chiefs attempt to snap a seven-game losing streak in Denver. The only team that owns a longer streak without a win at a current NFL stadium is Cinncinnati. The Bengals have never won at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in nine all-time contests (regular and postseason) at that facility.

However, the Broncos have uncharacteristically dropped their last three home contests. Denver hasn’t lost four straight home games since ‘93-94 as Kansas City capped that stretch with a 31-28 victory on MNF (10/14/94). Next week the Chiefs return home to face San Diego (12/14) to round out their divisional slate for 2008. Meanwhile, Denver travels to Carolina (12/14).

THE SERIES
Kansas City holds a 53-44-0 (.547) all-time advantage over Denver in the 97 previous meetings between the two clubs (96 regular season, one postseason). The Chiefs own 53 wins against the Broncos, tying Oakland as the franchise that Kansas City has defeated most frequently.

Since Mike Shanahan took over the Broncos in ‘95, the Chiefs own a slim 14-13 edge in the last 27 regular season meetings between these two franchises. The two clubs have split their last four meetings. The Chiefs won a 33-19 decision earlier this season at Arrowhead (9/28) thanks to a 198-yard rushing peformance from RB Larry Johnson to snap a two-game Denver winning streak in the series. Denver’s most recent victory against the Chiefs was a 27-11 victory at Arrowhead (11/10/07). The Chiefs will be seeking their first season sweep of the Broncos since 2000.

Kansas City is still seeking its initial victory at INVESCO Field and is attempting to end a seven-game losing skid at Denver. The Chiefs longest losing stretch at Denver was an 11-game streak from ‘83-93. The Broncos claimed a 41-7 decision in the most recent contest between the two clubs at INVESCO Field (12/9/07).

The Chiefs last road victory against the Broncos came in 2000 when Gunther Cunningham was serving as the Chiefs head coach. Kansas City posted a 23-22 victory (9/24/00) as the Chiefs overcame an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to claim the win. In total, the Broncos have won 10 of the last 14 regular season meetings between these two clubs in Denver. The Broncos produced a 14-10 victory in the only postseason meeting between the two teams, a ‘97 AFC Divisional Playoff Game at Arrowhead (1/4/98).

I'll venture a guess by saying that Thigpen's rushing combined with Johnson or Charles, probably averages higher than most teams that don't run at QB??

That's exactly what I was thinking. Oh by the way guys, I own this Chiefs sweatshirt. I have worn it every week except for 3. What 3 you ask? Denver (win), Oakland (the win), and TB (OT Loss). I'm pretty sure that I would be OK with us losing in OT ever game for the rest of the season, or wins. But yeah, I guess it is my fault that the Chiefs have been this screwed up this season. I'll take the fall... and my initials are CP (no, not Carl Peterson.... but I do have the same last name...)

I don't think it's a bad thing if we get 2-4 more wins. At least we'd go out on a positive note. Look at Tennessee they had a winning streak at the end of last year....maybe that could be us next year!! *COUGH COUGH*

I got this sweater two Christmases ago. So I think that I wore it a bunch last season, and I finally realized it this season when I didn't wear it.... So yeah, I think it would be bad to lose its magic if we all know that when I wear it, we lose.

Speaking of rituals....

I was working outside and came in before the game. I decided to pull out my old Chiefs hooded sweatshirt and hat. I haven't worn the sweatshirt all year but I figured I'd be a fan even though I still hope Hermie gets canned. Anyways, I ran into a Broncos fan (In NC) and he laughed and said we're gonna get killed. I wish I had his number now. Of course there's 3 1/2 quarters to screw the pooch. ROFL
