If you 010101 format it (sometimes called a complete format) you will. otherwise (quick format) it wipes the directory only, and data laying about is there until it's over written and could be retreieved pieces. Extents of files maybe all that are there, some complete files.... who knows depending on how the data was layed down originally.....

Why do you want to reformat it?

BTW, I agree that for practical purposes you'll lose the data although StcChief gives a more complete answer.
