Real consumer protection in spite of Congress or regulations:

Every product they test is at the request, and the expense, of its manufacturer, who seeks out UL not because it has to – no federal law mandates safety tests for most items – but because it’s cheaper and easier than a product-injury lawsuit, Drengenberg says. In fact, most retailers won’t stock a product if it hasn’t been safety tested. But it’s all voluntary, a tidy case study of the free market at its best: bottom-line drivers of consumer good. Christian Science Monitor (http://features.csmonitor.com/backstory/2008/12/17/the-safety-geeks-who-rescue-us-before-disaster-happens/)

UL "test[s] and approve[s] almost everything sold in America...with a few exceptions: cars, cosmetics, and food, for example."
Thanks to Adam Wilson for the link and for pointing out, "If only UL could also inspect food..." RockwellBlog.com (http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/024508.html[/quote)

I can't embed the video. But there is a video on the Monitor site.

Now look at China's products created by govt essentially.

The problem with your argument, is that China doesn't have any regulation though. I work in a field in which China is trying to get into our markets (they are succeeding) and they can make items much cheaper because they don't have the safety regulations that we do.

Also, the Right Wingers want to take away the ability to sue, or drastically downsize damages, through Tort reform. So if they ever succeed at that, according to your link, those US companies will no longer safety test because they won't have the fear of paying out damages, or such high damages anyway.

China's products have been proven unsafe as well due to lack of regulation.

They're made by a govt though, not the private sector. That's the point.

You don't think there are private citizens that are making tons of money in China? The major point is the government doesn't care about regulation in part because their own citizens safety is not a concern for them. Unfortunately all the competition has given in to their ability to provide near endless manpower for very little cost.
