This really sucks. I loved the 1up podcasts and what about my 10 remaining EGM magazines???

http://www.eat-sleep-game.com/news/2009/01/06/ugo-acquires-1upcom-from-ziff-davis-media-fires-more-than-two-thirds-of-editorial-staff/

The internet hummed quietly this morning on inauspicious word that the rumored buyout of 1UP.com and Ziff-Davis game group by Hearst Media (owners of the high-traffic but surprisingly low profile UGO gaming portal) had gone through this week. Originally, word was seen on news portal PaidContent.org, and though the story was quickly pulled down this morning, it remained indexed in Google’s cache and RSS feeds. However, it was thought that this would likely mean a few layoffs while UGO attempted to fit 1UP.com within their content stable.

Unfortunately, this was not to be:

Based on Twitter and forum posts by (now former) 1UP staff, it appears all but certain that the 1UP Show video podcast and 1UP Yours audio podcast are no more.

[Update: Joystiq has obtained what is, according to our sources, the full list of 1UP / EGM staffers laid off in the wake of the ZD/UGO deal: (eds. note: we can confirm that this list is accurate based on our own sources)]

This is our first post in about 10 months, and I wish it were under better auspices. However, this will not be the last. There may be a period of silence while we finish formulating plans that we had been discussing for some time, but eat-sleep-game will be back in action soon, with a new look, and some new faces. In the meantime, our hearts are with our friends at 1up (of which there are many). See you real soon, bitches.

Yeah, I'm hoping some of these guys can form a GiantBomb-like site and continue to do their podcasts.

Jesus Christ, that's a bloodbath. Mielke, Bettenhausen, Donahoe, Pfister... And the two more close to my sympathies, Anthony Gallegos and Ryan Scott. :(

ZG, do you know of any archives of old GFW Radio episodes? I have the feeling that stuff's getting wiped.

Being back at work is fine. It's just that I'd rather be playing Street Fighter (IV or HDR) & watching Two Lane Blacktop or Generation Kill. 10:19 AM Jan 5th from twitterrific

I just got laid off! Great! Thanks 1UP Show fans. It's been real. 24 minutes ago from Tweetie

It's a damn shame. I'm definitely going to miss the podcasts. At least we still have GiantBomb and Gamers with Jobs.

At one point I had them all, but I didn't think to keep them before I reformatted.

Efforts are underway on GAF to archive the files and torrent them though.

Yeah, the Bombcast & GWJ are good. I also listen to the Player One Podcast, Idle Thumbs (which I'm nearly done with, because for the past few episodes, they've constantly laughed at their own terrible jokes) and the CAGCast.

That said, the 1up podcasts were always more entertaining if only for preview-level game access, and I genuinely looked forward to the combo of the 1up Show & 1up Yours every week. Hopefully the few hints from ex-1upers at future podcasts end up resulting in new material, because despite the NPD number bullshit, devil's advocate stances and general lunacy, 1up Yours was consistently entertaining and informative.

Man that sucks. Listening to their podcast has always been a nice change up here at work when the sports news is slow (cough: baseball season).

That sucks.

You can still download the last 7 episodes on iTunes right now.

A ton of people are podcasting at Anthony Gallegos' old site for the time being, discussing the bloodbath:

http://www.eat-sleep-game.com/news/2009/01/08/as-promised-episode-1-of-rebelfm/

Reminds me of the early rumblings about what eventually became Giant Bomb after the Kane & Lynch fiasco.

And a great post from Jeff Green (http://jeff-greenspeak.blogspot.com/2009/01/no-youre-not-same-1up.html):

In the cold light of day, though, another truth remains: All those still at 1up are still great writers and editors, and will, in fact, produce great things. You cannot underestimate the talents of Jeremy Parish, Thierry Nguyen, Scott Sharkey, and everyone else, and they deserve our support. I'm glad for all those who survived the cut, and will continue to read their work. And I wish Sam all the best over this difficult time of transition.

But since he's obviously hamstrung by having to put a happy face on this bloodbath, I'll just say what would have been nice to read, instead: "Our website is decimated. Our new owners failed to recognize the talent we had, which comes as no surprise since their own website values lowest-common-denominator pandering over quality content. We will do our best to do what we can, despite the fact that they gutted us. This fucking sucks."

What I want to know is: Am I going to get comped for the remaining issues on my EGM subscription?

...

Yeah, I like print magazines. What of it?

Considering the donations, I'm beginning to think that the best thing that can happen to a gaming journalist -- outside of maybe being hired by a game company -- is to get screwed over by the suits in very public fashion.

So hey, just in case anyone's been living under a rock:

Out of the Game (http://mexicutedbyhepitacos.libsyn.com/) (Jeff Green, Shawn Elliott, Robert Ashley, N'Gai Croal, Luke Smith)

I love the intro, ZG.

I believe that the answer to my question is no. Lame.

EGM is coming back. (http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=8991643&publicUserId=4549175)

What have we learned?:

Also, as much as I consider Shawn Elliott to be the absolute top reason to listen to anything ever, Jeff is such a naturally gifted host that I hope he keeps/kept his hands on the reigns in the new Out of the Game. And could ya spare another "Hello and welcome," mister?
