Photos of Podolak partying upset Iowa AD Barta

By TOM WITOSKY
REGISTER STAFF WRITER

Iowa athletic director Gary Barta expressed disappointment Friday over a series of pictures posted on the Internet of Hawkeye football radio announcer Ed Podolak during the team's recent trip to the Outback Bowl.

Three pictures of Podolak, 61, including one in which he is looking down the blouse of an unidentified woman and another in which he appears to be intoxicated, were posted on an Iowa State fan Web site.

The source of the pictures could not be determined, but Barta said he intends to find out more about the incident before the game in Tampa, Fla., and added that Learfield Sports — Podolak's employer for Hawkeye football broadcasts — also is involved.

Podolak, a former Hawkeye quarterback and running back and a member of the Kansas City Chiefs' Hall of Fame, declined to comment specifically on the pictures or his condition at the time, but took responsibility for his involvement.

"I am embarrassed by the pictures. It was late in the evening at the hotel. But I am responsible to represent the university and I am embarrassed by my actions," Podolak said in a telephone interview.

Barta said he learned of the pictures Friday.

"I have had a chance to see them and I am deeply disappointed," Barta said in a prepared statement. "The pictures do not represent the image and expectations of the University of Iowa."

Barta said athletes, coaches and athletic department representatives understand the importance of maintaining a good image.

"We work hard to make sure our student-athletes, coaches and staff understand what we expect of them," Barta said. "Clearly, we hold them to a high standard. It is important we hold everyone representing the Hawkeyes to a similar standard."

The pictures represent the second time Podolak has had to answer to Iowa officials for alcohol-related actions.

In 1997, Iowa City police charged Podolak with public intoxication and interference with official acts after campus police found him sleeping in the grass on the University of Iowa Pentacrest.

At the time of the arrest, a blood test found he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.23, nearly three times the level at which a person is considered intoxicated under current Iowa law.

Iowa officials said at the time of the 1997 incident that another arrest on similar charges could prompt them to dismiss Podolak from the radio broadcast. Podolak has been doing Hawkeye football broadcasts for more than 25 years.

"It was 11 years ago and I've made efforts to make sure that situation wouldn't happen again," Podolak said. "I am not sure what else I can say about that."
Podolak declined to answer specific questions about the woman in the pictures.

The Des Moines Register chose not to publish the pictures because the woman could not be identified, it was not possible to determine if she is a public figure and the source of the images was unknown.

Asked about his radio future, Podolak said questions raised by the pictures would be answered and evaluated by university officials.

"This has hit us very fast. What we will need to do is all of us take a look where to go from here," he said.

Podolak said he hoped university officials understood how embarrassed he felt by the pictures.

"I don't want to do anything to damage the university because it is my heart and soul. The love I have for the university is very important to me," Podolak said. "The proper procedure is for all of us to assess where we are at over the weekend."

Slight difference. Eustachy was an actual coach at a college party on campus. This guy just appears to be at a bar.

She's probably not used to getting that kind of attention. Looks like she might be bit of the "built for comfort" side.

Met Ed 7-8 years ago and he was very nice and down to earth.

I understand that Iowa has to take the position they are, but this doesn't seem like too much of a scandal to me.

The guy went out, had too much to drink and flirted with a girl.

Happens to the best of us......

I agree. But Ed's got a serious drunken history. Although I can't imagine that these pics alone would be enough cause him to lose his ability to make a living.

Podolak "retires"...

http://www.ottumwa.com/sports/local_story_015235458.html?keyword=secondarystory

Ed Podolak “retired” this week as the radio color man for Iowa Hawkeye football games. Let’s just say that word in quotations is more akin to “let go.” Scandalous photos posted on the Internet were purportedly Podolak’s downfall. He was snapped drinking at a bar in Tampa after the Outback Bowl victory over South Carolina. Let’s also just say it appeared Ed was having a good time. Iowa Athletic Director Gary Barta wanted Podolak to clean up, go to rehab with the chance to maintain his job. Ed said no dice. We’ll get into this later.

Iowa was able to recruit a lot of good players simply because of Podolak's hard earned reputation for Podolakin'. Podolak could Podolak with the best of them.

The Hawkeyes are going to have to win now with a bunch of Baptists and Mormons and partial qualifiers and I have to say that is going to be a tough row to hoe without Podolak in the booth(s).

I hope Ed gets some help. I remember a few years ago campus security found him passed out in the parking lot outside the stadium Sunday morning following a Saturday game. I've met Ed and seems like a nice guy, but he needs help.

Ed Podolak's Departure May Not Have Been Necessary, but It's Sad Anyway

Posted Jan 14th 2009 11:45PM by Mark Hasty (author feed)

Filed Under: Iowa, NCAA FB Gossip, NCAA FB Media Watch
Look, let's get one thing straight right up front: The University of Iowa did not just discover that Ed Podolak, its longtime radio analyst, liked a good party. Mike Hlas of the Cedar Rapids Gazette confirms that Podolak's good-time proclivities were an open secret in the Hawkeye Nation. So if you think Ed Podolak was forced into retirement because the University didn't like the pictures floating around the internet, please know that it goes deeper than that.

Of course, that doesn't mean that Podolak had to go. While many people are dubious that Podolak actually retired, Hlas says Podolak left of his own volition. That, unfortunately, is what makes an already sad story a little sadder.

According to Hlas, Podolak could have saved his job if he'd gone to rehab, but he chose not to.

Presumably under direction in this matter by Athletic Director Gary Barta, Podolak was urged to seek alcohol treatment and then be welcomed back to the Iowa football radio booth this fall for a 28th consecutive year as an analyst.

Podolak took the other option, to retire from broadcasting at age 61. It truly is something he had already been considering, by the way.

I have little doubt Hlas is telling the truth that Podolak was already thinking about hanging it up. 61 is far from old age, in my opinion, but if Podolak feels he wants to do other things with his time, that's his privilege. The radio gig was far from his only source of income. If he simply chose retirement over rehab, that's a regrettable decision, but it's one he is free to make.

Hlas notes that there's just a touch of hypocrisy in the University's attitude towards Podolak's drinking, given that alcohol flows at many alumni and booster events, and the radio broadcasts are sponsored by a beer company. Whatever. However you feel about alcohol, you can't deny that it's part of the college football scene on most campuses. The students aren't the only ones knocking back a few, either.

What wounds me the most, as a Hawkeye fan, is that the last sensory link to the glorious acscendancy of Iowa football under Hayden Fry is now gone. Jim Zabel, a man whose voice is burned into my brain, was Iowa's play-by-play announcer for 47 years, but his run ended in 1996. Sure, Kirk Ferentz was on Hayden Fry's staff back then. I don't remember him from back then. I do remember that every time I've listened to Iowa football on the radio, Ed Podolak was there. And now he won't be. It's not going to be the same. No matter who they get to replace him, the games are going to sound different.

Any time a group of people face a collective disappointment, a good chunk of that group's energy will go to figuring out who's to blame. Blame, however, is like fruitcake: somehow, it always seems like there's enough for everybody. You can blame the message board poster who first put up the pictures of Podolak. You can blame Jay Christensen, The Wiz Of Odds, who was one of the first big bloggers to put the pictures up. I'll stick up for my homeboy (Christensen and I are from the same home town, though I don't know him) and say that those pictures weren't going to stay hidden for long. The Des Moines Register didn't shy away from publishing the notorious pictures of Larry Eustachy, after all. You can blame internet culture in general for making character assassination our true national pastime. You can blame Gary Barta and the University of Iowa administration for being two-faced about alcohol, believing that it's fine for their booster events, but anybody who wears a university face had better just say no. You can even, I suppose, blame Ed Podolak himself.

Then again, if Mike Hlas is telling the truth, it was entirely Podolak's decision, and nobody's to blame. We're just all a little worse off for it.

This is stupid. Don't pull the University employee thing either, because I always used to see the TA's out hammered at the bar and nailing chicks from their own discussions they taught. I'm sick of tired of the media making everybody feel like you can't go out drinking and having a good time. Not everybody is Pacman Jones. I get sloshed every single weekend and I have never been to jail, never lit up a strip club, or shot anybody in the face. It's not that hard.
