New England Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli has agreed to become head of football operations for the Kansas City Chiefs, two NFL sources told ESPN's Michael Smith.

NFL.com Video
Herm Edwards recaps the Chiefs' 2008 season and addresses his status with the organization.
Pioli was seen packing up his office Tuesday afternoon, a Patriots source said.
The decision to hire Pioli likely means Herman Edwards will not be back as Chiefs head coach next season. Among the top candidates to succeed Edwards is New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
A source close to the situation told ESPN.com's Bill Williamson that Edwards found out about the Pioli hiring through the media and hadn't been told anything by the Chiefs' management as of Tuesday afternoon. Edwards sent his assistant coaching staff home to await word on the future in light of the Pioli hiring news.
Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio will replace Pioli as vice president of player personnel, league sources told ESPN.
Pioli, 43, has been with the Patriots for nine years.
Pioli should find a warm welcome in Kansas City. At the last Chiefs home game, shortly after the embattled Carl Peterson resigned after 20 years as president, general manager and CEO, several signs were spotted in the crowd proclaiming, "We want Pioli."
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Wiki bio:

Steve Julio Spagnuolo[1](born December 21, 1959 in Whitinsville, Massachusetts) is the current defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. He was named coordinator January 2007, following 8 years under defensive coordinator Jim Johnson's Philadelphia Eagles staff. After his Super Bowl XLII victory Spagnuolo was considered for the head coach of the Washington Redskins but remained with the Giants with a 3 year contract of more than $2 million a year.

After graduating from Grafton (MA) High School, Spagnuolo played wide receiver at Springfield College, and assisted the University of Massachusetts football team while pursuing his graduate degree[2].

Spagnuolo's defense, a 4-3 base (four down linemen and three linebackers), mirrors that of Jim Johnson's in Philadelphia with a heavy emphasis on multiple blitz packages, including corner and safety blitzes, and pressuring the quarterback. In New York he often used a smaller defensive line, with three or even four defensive ends—Osi Umenyiora, Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, Mathias Kiwanuka—to further pressure the QB. The Giants led the NFL in sacks in 2007, with 53. They sacked Tom Brady five times in Super Bowl XLII, the most times he had been sacked in any game that season.

On February 7, 2008 he took his name out of consideration for the head coaching position of the Washington Redskins, citing the fact that he didn't feel ready to be a head coach. People speculated that he did not like the fact that the coordinators were already installed, but he stated he had no problems with them. The same day, the New York Giants made Spagnuolo the highest paid defensive coordinator with a 3 year contract for 2 million dollars each year.[3]

On January 4, 2009 he met with Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen to discuss the opening of head coach position in Denver.[4]

With his signature, Spagnuolo writes "HEB 11:1". Hebrews 11:1 is a verse from the Bible, and it says: "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." He did not realize that the verse's number was the Giants' road record, which actually set the record for most consecutive road wins, until a fan pointed it out to him.[citation needed]

Spagnuolo's name has recently come up as a replacement for Rod Marinelli in Detroit, Eric Mangini in New York, and Herman Edwards in Kansas City.

I didn't know that. Strange, since my short list for coaches was pretty much Spags and Jim Johnson. Why doesn't he get more interviews?

I was damn impressed with BOTH defenses in the last playoff game. The Giants shut down Westbrook. Had Eli played like even an average QB, they probably would have won the game.

Right.....So they were good for years and he came in and continued to make them good and actually great in the fact they won the superbowl, but he deserves no credit. However, I bet if the defense started to decline and become terrible he would get all the blame.

How have you not used what you learned here for this example? Great offense for 3 years, Herm comes in and PLUMMIT! But it's probly not Herm's FAULT just like it's not Spags Props for being good. Yeah that logic is comical at best.

If it ends up being Spags as HC:

OC: Pat Shurmur Eagles QB Coach
With McDaniels calling the plays in Denver which he said he would, Jeremy Bates of Denver who coaches WR and QB would be a top choice.

DC: Sean McDurmott DB coach, Eagles. When the McDaniels news broke, it was rumored to be McDaniels top choice but then news was Dom Capers coming along from NE and it ended up being Mike Nolan. McDurmott is also one of the top choices of McCarthy in GB.

Can't rule out Capers coming along with Pioli to KC as DC. He has a past in the 3-4 but did run the 43 zone blitz package with good result under Coughlin with the Jags after Capers was fired as the panthers HC.

They could do what the browns did. Their only minority interview was their Crennel's DC Mel Tucker. He didn't even get to stay on staff unless he takes a demotion to DB coach. Rob Ryan is their new DC.

So i guess KC could interview TE coach Jon Embree for HC just to clear the way if they don't want to interview any others. Assuming Embree would do the interview.

We don't know who conducted the most thorough head coaching search of any of the teams so far.

Seriously. What the f**k is this gooner on about? :spock:

I was under the impression that a formal interview could not take place with a head coach already employed. I could be wrong about that.

Maybe for the first interview. Can't hire him until they interview at least 1 minority candidate like Raheem Morris or Ron Rivera, etc.I saw an interview where he said he's Itallian - does that count?:D

That is BS. Both the Lions and Jets have interviewed dozens of people.

After looking it up, both of those teams have interviewed more people than I was aware of.

No, don't think so. But explains why Pioli likes him. Them damn italians stick together. Could be worser. They could be Cicilians.

The Broncos took 12 days to hire a coach while both the Lions and Jets have been interviewing for over 2 weeks now.

Now that doesn't mean the Lions and Jets know what they are doing but they have interviewed alot of people.

Zero, formally.Again, how do you know? We were under the impression that Pioli was the only "formal" interview - but there are reports now that Clark actually interviewed multiple candiadates.

Just because he isn't playing the game in the media doesn't mean he isn't playing.

They don't know shit. Clark has had shit so under wraps he could have interviewed a half dozen by now, but ultimately it's who has pioli Interviewed, he knows who he wants already I guarantee it.

Well, if this is ALL true, I have to give major props to the remaining Chiefs front office people and Clark Hunt for keeping everything private.

That's the way to do business.

I agree, business with class. It will not go without notice around the NFL.

Quick question for those that were around at the time - were Carl and Marty presented as a package deal when they were hired?

The story was Marty threw the infamoue "temper tantrum" in Cleveland that got him fired b/c he knew he had the KC job, all of this happened b/f Peterson fired Gansz.

Peterson NEVER fired a coach unless he had the next one hired.

that's not the way I remember it... the rumor that is... I remember the speculation was that Peterson went to Vermeil first... but Vermeil declined. Peterson had no contact with Marty as I remember...
