Who was your favorite player when you first started following your favorite team?

For example, I became a diehard follower of the Chiefs in '89 (freshman year of high school), but have a few scattered memories of the '80s teams. The player that I always remember liking the most was the other #88, Carlos Carson. (Well, he wasn't the only other #88, but compared to the other other 88s -- Victor Bailey, J.J. Birden, Chris Burford, Webster Slaughter, Riley Walton and Walter White -- I'd say he was the best of the rest.)

If I may play?

My first favorite player in any sport was Tony Gwynn
My first favorite Charger was Junior Seau

I was about 5 years old when I started following both teams, and was a bigger Padres Fan until I was about 14 years old, then I became a bigger Chargers fan.

Derrick Thomas. That's it. He's the reason I am a Chiefs fan who grew up in Northeast Pennsylvania. My best friend when I was about 9-11 was from Missouri, and he got me watching one of the best LB's to ever play the game

#89 - Otis Taylor - Should be in the HOF. Rare combination of speed and power. He was special...

# 17 - WR Elmo Wright - First player to High Step after a TD. When I was a kid, my parents had UH season tickets and he was an ALL American for the Cougars.

#14 - Eddie Podolak - He did more with less than any player

Frank White for sure. After games he would sit out in his car and talk to us about the game and stuff. I remember going to Blue Springs bank because he was making an appearance and nobody was there to see him and he just sat and talked with me, this 14 year old kid, for an hour and was the nicest guy ever.

For the chiefs Joe Delaney. I remember being destroyed when I found out he died, the same with DT.

The Kansas City Kings-I remember going to my first Kings game at Kemper arena. They just so happened to be playing the Lakers and there I saw Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and was mesmerized by him. The lakers remain my favorite basketball team.

When I was a kid my favorite player out of any sport was Rickey Henderson. I just thought it was awesome that he could steal second and third base, and that he could hit homers too.
In football I thought Billy Sims was awesome, even though his NFL career was short. I saw him play a game where he jumped into the air during a run and kicked the defender in the chest like Bruce Lee or something. They called a penalty on it, but I thought that was the coolest thing for some reason. Then he got hurt and his career was basically over.

I was ten years old his last season, so I really only saw him for about two years. But I still remember the way he would jump over the pile, and dive into the endzone. Great memories of starting out as a Chiefs fan. I collected about 250 of his football cards, and saved up to get his rookie card, which was about $30 then. My aunt got me his authobiography, and he had autographed it - what a prize. Whenever I had to do a book report in school, I always did it over Marcus. Over time, I had an autograph mini helmet from Allen, and a couple pennants of him.

Royals - it starts and ends with big George, one of my fondest childhood memories was when my grandparents took us to the 'good seats' 3 rows off first base. My gramps told me about the 'rally hat' where you put your baseball cap on inside out. Put it on when the Royals were down 2 in the 9th, George hit a walk off HR 3 batters later.

Chiefs - Dino Hackett, shortly thereafter eclipsed by DT.

Rick Volk #21 - Safety Baltimore Colts 1967 - 1975

Until the mid 70's there was the College All-Star game played every year in Chicago. It was the NFL Champions against the college all-stars from the year before. In the 1966 game I kept seeing the same safety making a lot of plays, I found out his name was Rick Volk from Michigan.

The next year the Baltimore Colts drafted Rick in the second round and he was my first favorite player, not counting Johnny Unitas of course. Rick played in both Super Bowl III and V for the Baltimore Colts and had an interception which helped set up the winning TD in SB V to beat Dallas. Rick also was selected to the pro-bowl 4 times.

Tomczak notwithstanding:

Joe Montana is the reason I'm a Chiefs fan. Thaaaaaanks for all those times I got to cry after the playoffs abruptly ended.

In baseball it was obviously Sandberg and Grace (and Dunston), but I also loved Steve Avery for some reason.

Also, Reggie Miller > you.

I got an Ed Podolak autograph when I was in 2nd grade.

My first favorite athlete was Bob Gibson. We went to Busch Stadium in '68 and I asked my dad why he wasn't pitching. I thought he pitched every day like I did.

In basketball it was Oscar Robertson when he was with the Bucks. We called him cousin Oscar because my mom's maiden name is Robertson.

Otis Taylor, the rabbit-chasing, double-breasted-suit-wearing, Prairie View-attending, one-hand-catching, Ben-Davidson-beating, Viking-juking all-star receiver of the World Champion 1969 Kansas City Chiefs.

My main man Otis! :thumb:

I mentioned Jim Brown as my first favorite.

Other sports:
MLB — Rocky Colavito
NCAA football — Jack Lambert
NCAA basketball — Tim Hardaway (I kinda came to the game late.)
NHL — Patrick Roy (I kinda came to the game really late.)

Screw the NBA since Magic and Bird hung it up. (I liked Magic, but not enough that I ever cared very much for the pro game.)
Screw MLB since 1970 or so. I don't really remember.

As a very young child before I understood the game at all my uncle was a huge Packers fan. I spent my childhood wearing #15 and thinking I would be the next Bart the cool Starr. I became a Raiders fan in my teens. I still get a chucle when I read or hear someone call Len Dawson Lenny the cool. They played in the same era and that nickname belonged to Starr. :)

MLB Rocky Colavito

I was at the game that Rocky Colavito hit four home runs, it was June 10, 1959. It was the Indians, of course, against the Orioles here in Baltimore at old Memorial Stadium. I was in the fourth grade and my dad took me since school had just let out.

That game was on my mind because recently I had looked it up when I told someone that Minnie Minoso hit a homerun in the game and they said he never played for the Indians. I remembered Minnie more than Rocky because we sat in leftfield and everybody kept kidding Minnie that the other outfielder was doing all the work. Then later Minnie hit a homer and when he came back out we gave him an applause. Opposing fans at games aren't like that today.

My idol as a kid was Michael Jordan. Plain and simple. DT is my first sports memory...and a prime reason I became such a diehard Chiefs fan...attending every home game from age 6-12 helped.

Chief: Derrick Thomas

Royal: Kevin Appier

K-State FB: Eric Hickson
K-State BB: Jeremiah Massey

I was born in '89, that's why the names are all pretty recent. All-time favorite Chief is still DT, but Okoye, Dawson and Otis Taylor are all favorites of mine as well based on what I've seen from old highlights and games.

Growing up watching the 90's Royals, there wasn't much to like, but Appier, Dye & Sweeney were my top 3 favorite players. I bought a Jermaine Dye jersey about 2 weeks before he got traded. All-time favorites are Brett, White & Wilson based on everything I've seen/read about them.

For K-State, Hickson was just a beast at RB when I was growing up. Michael Bishop, Josh Buhl and Darren Sproles are a few that have been added since then. Mike Beasley has since replaced Massey as my favorite KSU basketball player, but I'm still a big fan of his.
