...when I said Sean Hannity was the face of the Republican Party.

I continue to think Hannity and Limbaugh are the face of the party for the next four years, and with good reason:

THE LINE REPUBLICANS CAN'T CROSS....

On Monday, Rush Limbaugh took a few shots at Republican leaders in Congress, saying they're not doing enough to "frighten" President Obama. Yesterday, Rep. Phil Gingrey (R) defended the party leadership (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0109/18049.html), and dismissed the right-wing talk-show host for finding it "easy" to "throw bricks" from the outside.

Gingrey added that Limbaugh and others like him "don't have to try to do what's best for your people and your party. You know you're just on these talk shows and you're living well and plus you stir up a bit of controversy and gin the base and that sort of that thing. But when it comes to true leadership, not that these people couldn't be or wouldn't be good leaders, they're not in that position of John Boehner or Mitch McConnell."

And just how long did it take before Gingrey was forced to back down and grovel for forgiveness after saying something sensible? About a half-day (http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/bipartisanship/gop-congressman-apologizes-for-offending-limbaugh-fans/).

Turns out that Gingrey's measured remarks provoked such a violent outcry that he has now been forced to apologize.

"Because of the high volume of phone calls and correspondence received by my office since the Politico article ran, I wanted to take a moment to speak directly to grassroots conservatives," Gingrey said in a new statement released by his office. "Let me assure you, I am one of you."

"I never told Rush to back off," Gingrey continued. "I regret and apologize for the fact that my comments have offended and upset my fellow conservatives -- that was not my intent ... Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Newt Gingrich, and other conservative giants are the voices of the conservative movement's conscience."
Gingrey went on to say, "I see eye-to-eye with Rush Limbaugh (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0109/18067.html)," adding that he's among millions of Americans "inspired" by Limbaugh.

Note, Gingrey hadn't said anything especially controversial yesterday. It is easy for political observers on the outside to criticize, as compared to keeping a party together. But Gingrey not only faced a swift rebuke for daring to question Leader Limbaugh, but apologized, in writing, and in an embarrassingly meek tone.

The Republican Party is suffering something of a leadership vacuum. It's pretty obvious who's calling the shots.

I like Rush's chances. He'll be around long after Obomba's popularity fades.

Don't know and don't care. I just know I've listened to Rush for almost 20 years and he's had bigger fish than Obomba.

And I'm diametrically opposed to Rush on almost every issue. I do know he has listeners who will rally around him and if Obomba is not careful will be the springboard to the resurrection of that dead party.

Wouldn't that be ironic?:hmmm:

Yes, they are. They are rallying the conservative base that feels they have no leaders in DC. If they (Limbaugh and Hannity) can find someone in DC to rally around that is when they will become dangerous for Obomba. Right now it's just the two of them stoking the flames of what is left of the charred ruins of the party.

Rush Limbaugh is the epitome of what is wrong with the Republican party.

Some guy called into his show the other day and said we should have a right to tell these banks taking the bailouts, what to do with the money.

Of course Rush slammed him, defended John Thain, defended Citigroup on the plane ordeal, but conveniently said he hated the fact that they took the money.

Rush is an ignorant, arrogant dumb fuck that is as out of touch with reality as the arrogant assholes he was defending. Comapanies take money from the tax payer, then the tax payer as a say at what goes on at said company. If Rush don't like it then perhaps he should loan them some of his own millions?

Sounds like Rush got it right to me.

Someday, if you ever start collecting your social security checks, how would you like it if the feds started running your life for you because you were accepting federal money?

And that, IMO, is truly a pitiful testament to the state of contemporary conservatism.Barry Goldwater would reach up through Sean Hannity's asshole and strangle his brain just by sheer willpower if he were still alive.

Plus he was an actual POLITICIAN. The fact that talk show hosts "lead" the Republicans these days is atrocious. Some Republicans had problems with Reagan's acting career in 1979? That is nothing.

Yeah, that's kind of a bait and switch right there. Limbaugh is in a class of his own at the top of the mainstream conservatism heap (as distinguished from "real conservatives" as you and BEP would describe Ron Paul). I suspect that even Hannity would agree with that.

Excellent point. Goldwater and Buckley were also conservative intellectuals, which can't be said for either of the contemporary bleating mouthpieces. Hannity, Loofah Boy, and Limbaugh have become the contemporary version of the "The Morton Downey Jr. Show". Political Jerry Springers, complete with a similar fan base.

What a tragedy for the movement founded by Goldwater, Buckley, etc.

Reagan wept.

These guys on the right remind me of the tele-evangelists (Bakker, Swaggert, and the like). Their flock follow them blindly even when they prove to be the biggest hypocrites on the planet. The same goes for the lefties like Jackson, Sharpton, etc.

Untill people stop blindly following divisive, negative, blaming rhetoric we will continue to have buffoons that exploit these simplistic notions.

How much more divisive can you get than pushing every single Republican vote and several democrat votes to the opposition side of your first major legislation?

No, you didn't touch a nerve. I just thought it was ironic for an Obama guy to be criticizing anyone for "following [a hypocrite] blindly".

See, that’s what you get for being a part time listener. You would actually agree with Rush had you listened to more of his show.
His point with the planes thing is that these guys can run their business any way they see fit. Even if they are running it straight into the ground, but when they do they have to suffer the consequences for their actions and Rush has been against the bailouts, all of them, from the beginning.
