I don't think it's a particularly damning misstep, but I do think trying to empathize about grocery prices by remarking 'have you seen the price of arugula at Whole Foods lately' is at least as cringeworthy as GHWB's fascination with the optical scanner.

People who shop at Whole Foods aren't concerned with food prices and people who seek out arugula aren't either. You want to empathize, you remark on the cost of milk, eggs, and iceberg lettuce, and you remark of the cost at 'the local market' not smugtax frou-frou town.

It's not what they've heard of, it's what they're worrying about feeding their family with.

Iowans know beef, too. Doesn't mean they're receptive to someone saying "I hear it's getting harder to prepare a decent meal for your family, I mean have you seen the price of the Wagyu filet at Le Circe lately?"

Comparing arugula and Whole Foods to Wagyu beef & a high-end restaurant is just as off-the-mark as comparing arugula to common-diet staples, if not more so.

Have you been to Whole Foods? $6 Milk, $5 Orange Juice, $7 loaves of bread.

Le Circe has a fancy tax, Whole Foods has a smug tax. Both are out of keeping with the belt tightening mindset.

Arugula's not even expensive at Whole Food because of economic conditions, it's expensive at Whole Foods because it's certified local grown, fair wage paid, pesticide free, organic, low carbon footprint transported, and xxx more smug surcharges.

There's no argument from me about Whole Foods being pricy. I know; I shop there when I can. BTW -- I hope you know that there is obviously no point in me arguing that Obama didn't connect to that Iowa audience as strongly as he should have; I am not arguing that. I just don't think it was anywhere close to being the gaffe that some people still think it was.

Still, arugula is a Hell of a lot more common of an ingredient than Wagyu.

The point is that people shopping there are not being pushed to economical choices, and the pricing there is not economy conscious.

I simply don't see arugula as going over the heads of that audience. Whole Foods? Sure, that was a tiny misstep; there isn't even a single Whole Foods in Iowa. But while arugula isn't as politically-savvy, perhaps, as the tried and true milk, eggs, etc., it doesn't strike me as very far off.

Sure. Agreed. (For the most part, anyway. I'm sure there are shoppers who would rather be paying normal supermarket prices, but feel they can't do so morally. I'd think those people are making economic cutbacks in non-food related areas).

My God, please read. I've never so much as intimated that the audience didn't understand or anything went over their heads. It's that his example was almost perfectly ill-suited to the impression of understanding and empathy he was trying to relate.

"over their heads" was poor wording on my part. I'm still of the opinion, though, that the arugula component of that example was not out-of-line with the audience (though not ideal). The Whole Foods component of the example was what caused distance. I guess I just think that more people eat arugula than you think is all.

Dude, look at this BS:

Jan 29 2009

The economic stimulus plan approved by the House allocates over $100 billion for green projects. While there is sure to be political back and forth in the coming days, one thing is certain, no matter what the ultimate outcome: We're going to be hearing a lot more about "green collar" jobs.

So, what exactly is a "green collar" job, and more importantly, how do you get one? There's no definitive term just yet, but here's the short answer according to Pete Altman at the Natural Resources Defense Council: "A green job is just like a regular job only the result of what you are making or doing is good for the environment."

And, it turns out that what's good for the environment is going to be good for America's workforce. A reportfrom the University of Amherst Massachusetts says that a $100 billion investment in green programs would create about two million jobs over two years. About 750,000 green jobs already exist, according to a 2008 U.S. Conference of Mayors' report.

Many of the so-called "green" jobs are familiar and don't require significant retraining."If you are a machinist building pipeline equipment, you could just as easily be a machinist building wind turbine equipment," says Altman.

Green jobs have the potential to replace jobs in declining sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and auto manufacturing. "The biggest jobs are going to be in maintaining wind turbines and installing solar panels," says Jackie Roberts of the Environmental Defense Fund. In order to bring costs down, solar panels are going to need to be manufactured more like automobiles. The production-line experience of autoworkers will translate well into solar, for example.

Investments in one sector will have widespread effects. A boost in building retrofitting, for example, will create the need for electricians, heating and air conditioning installers, carpenters, roofers, and building inspectors, and others. "You can't send a whole building to China and then bring it back. The work has to be done here," says Altman.

Across the board, we'll see more jobs for the following professions: Engineers, Electricians, Carpenters, Welders, Machinists, Truck Drivers, Sheet Metal Workers. You can get a better sense of specific jobs and salaries in this report from Environmental Defense Fund. It's also worth checking out the website for a Green Jobs Expo that's taking place in Washington DC next week.

http://green.yahoo.com/blog/greenpicks/231/what-the-green-collar-economy-means-for-you.html

I'll be sure to bump this from time to time.

Have you ever known someone who is vegetarian or vegan? Of course you have. That dietary choice is (barring medical reasons) an ethical one.

Your sentiment that food ethics is hoighty-toighty crazy-talk is increasingly out of step with the mainstream. A lot of people want to know where their food came from, whether or not a product uses high fructose corn syrup, prefer to buy local, or hundreds of other things related to the ethics of food. We all have to eat; its silly not think that ethical questions surrounding food aren't relevant.

Lots of regular, middle class people shop at whole foods. Maybe not in the backwoods where you live, but in the real world. People are concerned with getting healthy foods, and that isn't frou-frou, it's common sense.

I don't shop there because it is on the other side of the island, but I shop at a similar store near me. I'm not rich, I'm not a yuppy, I'm not frou-frou. I grew up in rural Missouri as redneck as anyone.

I wasn't insulting them, and I made that clear. You know what else, I shop there, but only for things I can't get anywhere else and for things I find a relatively good deal. My produce mostly comes from the city market, and a 'farmer's market' local supermarket that actually has better prices for local grown stuff than the supermarkets, let alone Whole Foods. And by far the most of my food purchases come from Trader Joes who have applied the Sam's Club/Walmart focus on affordability to the 'frou-frou' stuff Whole Foods hawks.

We only tell the Schiavo jokes during the passing of the plate, after that we only make fun of liberals. You'll love it.

No, you know I'm right and that's why you are getting upset. Silly, try and be honest and show courage in your convictions. Investments in one sector will have widespread effects. A boost in building retrofitting, for example, will create the need for electricians, heating and air conditioning installers, carpenters, roofers, and building inspectors, and others. "You can't send a whole building to China and then bring it back. The work has to be done here," says Altman.

Sounds a little like the "broken window" theory of job creation.
