Every time I see a thread titled the way this one is I keep hoping to see something new because I find the guy to be incredibly annoying.

That said, I never grow tired of watching Rome on the floor on his back. :D

You know a part of me thinks Jim Rome is a puss behind a mike, but you know what. Everett came on that show so Jim Rome couldn't call him that behind his back. Jim manned up, said it to his face.

He only said it to his face because he didn't think Jim would DO anything on camera. As usual, Rome's ego was wrong.

I love Jim Rome. I dont take him seriously. Hes just an entertainer.


I remember when this happened back in 94 or 95?. The rumour was that it was staged. I still think it probably was. It definately helped put him on the map.

Rome had a pair because he knew his stage staff was just a couple feet away.

he wouldn't have the stones to do that in private or at a bar etc

It was staged in the sense that Rome had been calling him Chrissy, and he knew that Jim was coming on the show to see if he'd call him that to his face. And he did.

But they didn't plan out the fact that Everett would embarass himself like that on national television. What did he have to gain from such plans?

Oh, I know, it was embarassing for Rome as well. But Everett lost more from the exchange than Rome did, to be sure.

I wish this never happened because Jim Rome would be long forgotten by now.

It's amazing that anyone is lame enough to enjoy listening to him.

I don't think it was staged. He wouldn't even mention it on his show for about 8 years after that. And you can see the fear in him when Everett came across. That gave Jim Rome a name, but that didn't make him. He was already getting fairly well known at that point. At the time the only nationally syndicated radio sports shows were the Fabulous Sports Babe and Ron Barr at night. His act seems played out and trite to some people now, but when he started he was different than anything else on the radio. There weren't sports shows on in every market back then.
I'm not defending him or the content of his show, I'm just saying I don't think it was fake and it didn't give him his career.
