CHIEFS GOT VRABEL AND CASSEL FOR A SECOND-ROUNDER
Posted by Mike Florio: Saturday, February 28, 2009 1:56 PM

According to Peter King of SI.com, the final terms of the trade between the Chiefs and the Patriots include the movement of both quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel in exchange for a second-round pick.

As a practical matter, then, the connection of Vrabel to the deal decreases the likelihood (in our view) of a third team crashing the party and bagging Cassel.

Meanwhile, we're hearing rumblings that the Buccaneers are the undisclosed mystery team, and that if they can't land Cassel they'll make a play for quarterback Tyler Thigpen, the incumbent starter in Kansas City.

I don't understand why people are so anxious to get rid of Thigpen. Especially for garbage picks.

He's as good of a backup QB as you'll find--you know he is good enough that he won't be a complete liability if asked to come in, and he still has the upside to be a decent QB in the future. If Cassel is a one-hit wonder, as some believe he may be, then at least you have another young guy in the pipeline that you can throw into the action.

I think people are so stuck on the idea that a team needs to be built with 53 starters. That's impossible. Quality depth is important too, and Thigpen is quality depth with some upside who happens to cost nothing for you to keep on the roster.

I agree. I would take a 3rd for Thigpen, but not a 6th or 7th. Those are garbage picks, and you need a backup QB. As I said somewhere else, our offense if geared for Cassel may not be that different than what we saw last year. Cassel goes down then Thiggy can come in and at least hold the fort for a game or two, assuming we have upgrades in other positions (especially defense).

I'ld trade him for a 3rd in a heartbeat, but certainly wouldn't for a 6th or 7th.

As was mentioned earlier, Thigpen is worth more than Rosenfels.

What are you basing this on?

Rosenfels can play from a pro style offense, Thigpen cannot.

Rosenfels won more games as a backup last year than Thigpen won as a starter.

In his time in Houston, Rosenfels has a 65.5% completion percentage, a 1/1 TD/INT ratio, and an 84.3 rating.

The only thing Thigpen has going for him is that he's younger, and can run.

The only thing Thigpen has going for him is that he's younger, and can run.

He started 5 games this year, and flat out gave away 3 of them, turning the ball over 3 times after being up 27-10 to hand the game to the Colts. Then he threw 4 INTs against the Ravens, then he threw a key game ending INT against the Colts in their second meeting.

He threw 6 TDs to 10 INTs. The year before that, it was better at 15 to 12.

The main knock on Thigpen was his inability to lead his team in the 4th quarter, and his inaccuracy. I think Rosenfels shares those characteristics. And, like you said, Thigpen is younger.

Well, I'm not going to back myself into the corner and start another defense of Thigpen threads; I'm not really a big defender of his. But we do need to keep backup QBs, and I think his traits fit this quite nicely, especially if our offense looks anything like NE or Arizona's.

Other than having to roll him out constantly because he is too short of course.

I don't see anybody trading for LJ and his 20 million cap number over the next two years. There is no way Larry Johnson is renegotiating his contract either. We'll have to just cut him to get rid of him. Not to mention all of his off the field, alcohol spitting, woman hitting problems that got him suspended for four games last year. A team needs to think about protecting its population from a menace to society like him. They sure as hell aren't going to trade for those problems.
