I sometimes have certain patients that I start out doing well with, but 3 or 4 hours into the shift I am sorry I cannot have compassion I may need to have. They are the ones who will ring that damn light off the wall I mean every 3 minutes. They want this and they want that, and at some point I will end up telling them "Your not the only patient on this floor, we have 20 other ones who also need our help."

She wanted orange juice so I took her some, then she rang out and said "I can't get this orange juice open" I told her she could open it there was nothing wrong with her hands to keep her from opening it." She said "I thought you were a nice nurse" i said I try to be. :#

I lose it with these kind of people and only people in the medical field could possible understand what its like. The ones who have never worked in a medical field probably think this is terrible way to be. :banghead:

When you have a middle aged person who wets the bed although they don't do it at home and act like they can't walk to the bathroom to me is just being lazy when there is no diagnosis that says they cannot walk.

Ok I am blowing off some steam and it could go on forever:cuss:

I think you might be in the wrong line of work. You are always complaining about not getting sleep, having to lift people, scared of catching some disease, and now you lack compassion. Seriously. Why do what you're doing if you're so miserable, and you obviously are. You've also complained about how you don't make much, too. Why not go back to selling cars?

Try this response:

"Let's make a deal: I'll live up to your expectations of me as long as you do the things you're capable of doing on your own."

Then, to show how truly nice you are, treat her to her own private showing of the DVD movie "Misery".

Try this response:

"We're out of clean sheets right now and won't have any for a couple of hours."

Then, to show how truly nice you are, treat them to their own private showing of the DVD movie "Misery"...prefaced by you saying: "Let's see what happens to the patient in this movie who cannot walk."

I for sure don't know badgirl, so it's probably a commentary on healthcare in general, as may be other people's comments.

It seems that the nursing profession (in our experience) actually attracts those without compassion.

There is certainly a place for disconnected compassionless action in the medical profession. You don't need a crying sympathizing ER/Trauma doc/nurse, you need rapid, objective decision-making.

Having said that, the number cold-fish nurses in the field is astounding.

Maybe this could all be solved with easier to open orange juice? I must agree that those suckers can be brutal. Can they just make that opening tab a bit longer? Would it kill them?

Amen, Ms. Jilly.

Unfortunately, I have had a great deal of experience with hospitals. From UCLA to KUMC and St. Francis in Wichita to Vanderbilt. Trust me. You don't have to be old, Mr. raybec. Or deathly ill, for that matter. The problem is that patients sometimes actually get worse in the hospital. It's difficult to believe, I know, but it happens. I have long declared hospitals to be very dangerous places. I, myself, once had a reaction to an injection at UCLA that stopped my heart. Had it not been for a friend in attendance, I would have died because the onset took several minutes, the docs and nurses had left the room, and I was unable to reach the call light. Close one, that.

I can easily imagine a scenario in which Ms. badgirl decides for herself that a particular patient is being overly demanding and eventually ignores a call light for 10 to 15 minutes and it's during that delay that the patient has a reaction to a medication and chokes to death on their own vomit.

Others have said it better than I, but the attitude described by Ms. badgirl is indicative of a person who should not be responsible for the care of others in an hospital environment. Eventually, someone will die.

Oh. And, by the way, it's called "neglect". Lawyers love that stuff.

All great points, Mr. FAX.

The long and short of it--what a confusing and worthless cliche, this is--is that some occupations necessitate an actual love of the work. Not because of the money, not because of the hours, not because of any other perceived benefit.

Doctors, nurses, and all the folks that are essential care providers, must first and foremost have a deeply rooted love of their fellow man and an equally deep desire to want to help, in any way possible.

It takes a special calling, I'd say, to be in this line of work.

Someday, badgranny will be laying in her own urine and feces, tapping on the nurse button like its her job. I hope on that day, the half ass CNA taking calls decides to play 1 more game of solitaire before shuffling down to see what the racket is all about.

Those people are someone's mother, father, loved one.

Maybe, they're needy because they're in pain? maybe they're a little off because the pain killers temporarily retard/cloud their judgement/thinking/temperment?

I remember when my dying grandmother ended up getting some neglectful treatment at a Belton facility, my mom and her sisters stayed pretty much full time and made damn sure everything that was supposed to get done, got done. I remember how sad they said it was for the people that didn't have someone to watch out for them.

I know I couldn't do it, that's for sure, Mr. DeezNutz. However, there are many who can and who do a great job.

I think you're right, though. Ideally, a person who pursues a career in health care should possess a committed desire to assist others, a true love for their occupation, and a diminished sense of smell. It's not for everyone.

Of course, hospitals have any number of systems in place to try and ensure that patients are treated well and not neglected. That doesn't, however, prevent individuals who, for whatever reason, decide that a particular patient is being overly demanding and placing them on the back burner. It's cases like that (which I've experienced first hand) that make you worry. Also, it's a sad fact that care providers eventually become immune to the needs of their patients to one degree or another. You simply can't wear your heart on your sleeve day in and day out. Over time, they begin to view their patients as just another body in a room - not as individual human beings. From a self-preservation perspective, it's natural and actually very normal.

And that's the entire point. Ms. badgirl worries me because it is obvious from her post that she's placing the blame on her patients. Frankly, that's not where the problem lies. Rather, it's her attitude that is wrong and her own mindset that needs adjustment - not the peeps under her care. In my opinion, once a care provider finds themselves dehumanizing their patients, it's time to find another job.

She gets home and notices neither one of us have moved since she left and starts complaining about her day. She says, "I worked with two blind guys and a woman who couldn't speak a word of English today."

Obviously, a gentleman shouldn't discuss the quality of his lovers, but in the interest of good Planeteering, I admit that I, too, have participated in sexual encounters with nurses in the past, Mr. seclark. Frankly, I had misgivings about it. I mean, those were the same hands that dealt with some of the most highly unpleasant aspects of personal behavior. Kinda creepy, to be honest.

Nevertheless, I found them to be very uninhibited in bed which I chalked up to a familiarity, comfort, and interest in human anatomy, so I guess it's kind of a trade off.

Overall, I would rate nurses as a 6 or 7 on the occupational sex scale.

The "Nightingale Pledge"

The Nightingale Pledge was composed by Lystra Gretter, an instructor of nursing at the old Harper Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, and was first used by its graduating class in the spring of 1893. It is an adaptation of the Hippocratic Oath taken by physicians.

I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician, in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.

I like teachers better. They make you do it over and over until you get it right.

I need a job thats why, theres not much out there these days.

nurses like you piss me off.... seriously.

I realize some people are bad patients, but you don't know their story. You don't know what they've gone through to be where they are....and all they need is someone to take care of them and care. I know it's a demanding job, since hospitals are understaffed...but try to see them as human beings.

it could be you in that bed and how would you want to be treated?

Every medical professional, including the Drs. I talk to feel this way and if any medical profession says they don't think this way about patients that are a pain i the ass is a damn liar.

How are you able to differentiate between the patients who "need" you and those that do not?

Should you be making these types of evaluations? Isn't your job to attend to all patients?

I would assume if they're under the care of the hospital (or wherever you work), someone has deemed that they "need" care. Just saying...

Oh another thing, I am in fact cut out for this job, I am cut out for ICU, PEDS, burn unit, where I know without a doubt these people are very sick and need my help, I hate feeling useless, I like to feel like I have really done something at that has helped someone at the end of the day. I wish I was off the floor cause thats where you get everything from constipation to whatever. I loved it when I worked in CCU and felt like I was doing something for the patients. I think, generally speaking, the words judgmental and nurse don't work well together.

I have a great deal of respect for the profession, but it's not the place of the nurse to decide which patients need or deserve help and which are merely malingerers.

Perhaps you could put in a request asking that you not be required to care for drug addicts since they're not appropriately "sick" by your standards. While you're at it, you might want to include smokers, alcoholics, fat people, reckless drivers, etc..

Seriously, it's just not your place to make those judgments.

I have their diagnosis and read their charts. I know if someone who thinks because they are in the hospital all of a sudden thinks they can't walk to the bathroom when in fact they can, I stand at assist and let them do it on their own. I am not here to disable people, I am here to help them. I get report about the patients, diagnosis and chart and I know what they should be able to do themselves.

Maybe not, your probably right, but lets say you overdosed, then 2 days later your still in here, fine while you were sick and needed help, fine, but say when your feeling all better about ready to go home all of a sudden you think your in the holiday inn. Then maybe you should talk about something other than everything you hate or happen to overhear at work (but don't fully understand). I realize you hate this place and only come here to pass time. If you want people on here to respond better to you though, try focusing on the positive sometimes, and stop trying to get into fights with everyone who disagrees with you. I've actually just started kind of getting into that myself. Don't know enough to name fighters and such, though. I took tae kwon do in my early teenage years, so I like to look for punches and kicks that I recognize. Once they get down on the ground is where I lose track of what's going on.

Well Kevin has taught me a lot about the holds and stuff I learn more each time we watch together, he has a room with nothing but UFC and MMA stuff like Pride and King of the Cage and stuff in it. So for Valentines Day I talked the woman at Buckles into giving me the really big poster that was advertising the Affliction fight which it was only their 2nd or 3rd fight from affliction, he was very happy with that, it was something that couldn't be bought.

Not the last pay pre-view but the one before, the first fight I had to close my eyes, it was probably the bloodiest I have saw so far.

LMAO

CP classic to cherry pick a phrase.

Reminds me of the thread about a dog that started, literally, ****ing a kid. Somewhere in the story, the phrase "the dog finished" appeared, and this resulted in comedy gold, in a sick, I shouldn't laugh but have to, kind of way.

LMAO

I didn't even have to work till after my divorce, I left a man who probably makes more than anyone on here. I was a housewife and mother to 3 kids and I was almost 30 when I started to work, been doing crap work ever since, but now the kids are grown and out I need to do something different.

please don't end up abusing the elderly in nursing homes.

it takes a special kind of person to serve others..see Clara Barton.

I don't abuse anyone, why the hell would I abuse someone?

I don't only do crappy stuff that has to be done, but I have also done chest compressions in a code, pulled art. lines out after angiograms, drew blood for the lab and ran ACT's to see if the blood was thick enough to pull the line. Most places it takes 2 RN's to do the line pulling it used to be only dr.s who done it. I got to do most of this stuff in CCU at St. Johns. Except the code I done it in the ER a couple of months ago. But I do get the other things to, but it has to be done.

I make 12. bucks an hours mayby not great but pretty good for around here, now I am starting to nursing school in May, already passed my Entrance Exam, now something else prick, I would like to say nurses cannot do their job without aids, there is now fuc*ing way. Guess if your say mother went to the hospital and say she was really old, and needed to be turned over every 2 hours to keep he from getting bed sores, do you think the nurse will do that? Hell no!!! When the Dr. needs a stool specimen sent to the lab to see if mommy dearest is shitting blood or has c-diff etc. Who the hell do you think does that? This fu*cking unachiever, uneducated bitch, thats who. Hey maybe when mom shits herself laying in the damn bed, ask the damn nurse to do something about it. The CNA may be to damn busy passing god damn orange juice. You sir, can kiss my ass and go f*ck yourself .

You are killing me smalls! Hey maybe I caught you on a bad night. The word you were looking for is "no" not "now" anyway I am glad to read you are trying to better yourself. I have been pretty hard on you, and I hope you were venting and not stating how you treat people. Good luck to you and the people you treat. When it comes down to it the people you treat are the ones I worry about.

Its ok, yea venting is what I was doing, nothing more, I am good to my patients, and I do treat them well.

I know I get on here and complain a lot, but in reality I don't have anyone else I can vent to, pathetic, but true.

OMG Redrum just said for me to be a pornstar like my mom. LOL
