Does anyone else find it rather unseemly that a sitting US president is going on The Tonight Show? Personally, I find it disgusting. Is he POTUS or a f*cking celebrity?

Is he POTUS or a f*cking celebrity?

is that a rhetorical question?

he needs to distract from the cluster his economic policy has been. the only question is, will he have the teleprompter with him

George Clooney must have been to busy to sit with Big O again and give him more advice on Rowanda.

You would think hed have more important things to do right now then sit with Leno, give his final 4 picks, hang with Rooney and take audience with celebrities like clooney in the oval office.UFB

err...both.

And no, not unseemly. Makes no difference to me. I like it better than hiding from teh public as the prior President did far too often.

He's criticized for reading from a teleprompter, and he's criticized when he's forced to extemporize.

Candidates go on every talk show they can. Then when elected they can't? Sorry, I don't see much logic to it all. I guess it's not traditional.

You criticize him for reading canned speeches, and now you criticize him when he's forced to come up with original material.

How teh **** can he make you happy? Oh, right, he can't because your panties are in a permanent bunch because the POTUS doesn't wear panties.

It's just such a stupid thing to care about. I can't even fathom how this matters. Senators, Representatives, and CEOS have all been on comedy shows. This is just a fabricated controversy to add to a predetermined hate. No one other than the whack jobs posting bs on message boards could possibly give a shit about this, myself include. "We don't look at it as a process of demonstrating the president's sense of humor," Gibbs said, but rather a chance "to explain the economic situation we are in."

The first appearance by a sitting president on "The Tonight Show" may well end up being the last.

President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.

Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he's gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

No, not at all:

President George W. Bush will make a surprise appearance on the NBC game show Deal Or No Deal to thank an Iraqi war veteran contestant for his service to his country. The episode will be airing this coming Monday (Bob breifly mentioned this in his Blogosphere post).

The President's segment was pre-taped at the White House. The contestant, Captain Joseph Kobes, was on the program to try and win enough money to pay off his parents' home. He is a Purple Heart and Bronze Start recipient who completed three tours of duty in Iraq.

I don't hate Barack Hussein. I oppose him and his policies. This is just a rather disgusting, self-chosen example of his massive ego, not unlike choosing to move his coronation speech from the DNC hall to Mile High. Barack Hussein likes a big room.

The AIG bonus's were bad. Very bad. but we have other bad, very bad situations to deal with to. But if your in Washington all you care about is AIG bonus's. The world hasn't stopped spinning. The other issues are still there. INHO its good for him to get our of Washington.

As far as the assertion that he shouldn't know about bracketology, practice bowling and appear on Jay Leno etc....He can't work 24 hours a day and stress out all day and night he will burn out. There has to be some stress relief.

It's very good to see a president multi task. Wasn't that one of the reasons for a team of rivals to get the very best people in the jobs even if they didn't totally agree with you? He doesn't need to micromanage every issue and department.

what a bunch of BS. The President is suppose to represent us. We watch late night comedy shows. Thats not below him. He's not coming out and doing a comedy monologue its a venue/medium to talk to the American people without the Washington filter. We need more of this IMHO.

This one happens to be a matter of pure opinion. Not only that but the originator of the thread asked for opinion too. So in your opinion it's BS.

And the man is President of the United States. . He represents the nation as a whole. ( check out the Constitution ) Our reps represent us because there's no "one" us united in one big mind meld.

I expressed my opinion, that I disagree. I think it's inappropriate for a govt leader. I think it's tasteless and tacky. That doesn't mean I think it's a pressing major issue either.

You gonna complain about his posting videos on youtube also? Thats just a bunch of skater wiping out, dramatic squirrels and ninja cats. Why is it okay to talk through that medium?
I didn't complain. There was a thread put up about this topic and I expressed my opinion about it just like you are. I think it's too lowly for a president to be on that kind of venue. He's a govt official. He's not trying to win a popularity contest or charming the public.

Just saw this segment.

It's a lot worse in print than on TV. Leno's sarcastic remark was such that Obama's remark didn't sound out of place.

You mean Obama went on a venue in which an offensive remark about the handicapped didn't seem out of place, and you don't get why it's unseemly for him to be on the show?

No one in the room even flinched. Everyone was laughing.

Not to say it wasn't a bad idea, but it wasn't nearly as bad to see as it was to read.

Maybe he should go to a Friar's Club roast and make fun of gays and Hispanics. Everyone there would laugh, so it wouldn't be that bad.

However, the part of your quote I bolded is more about the thoughts the right tried to pretend the left was having than any real consensus of Obama's supporters thoughts about him. It's an entertainment show -- he's not going on Rowan and Martin or appearing as a guest star on Two and a Half Men or whatever.Considering Jay Leno hasn't had good jokes since Monica blowed Bill, I can see why The President wants to be on his good side. Good move Mr. President :thumb:

"We don't look at it as a process of demonstrating the president's sense of humor," Gibbs said, but rather a chance "to explain the economic situation we are in."

Really? He's the POTUS. He can address the nation as such on f*cking network television, at HIS discretion.Next, he should appear on Nickelodians Kid choice awards.

It's revolting, Amnorix. This isn't a news show. It's a f*cking comedy show.

It shows a lack of respect for the office. He's POTUS, not a celebrity.

A lot of younger people get their news from this show..and shows like the Daily show. I watch Leno and know whats going on in the world, and never watch any actual news

Obama deserves a kick in the nuts for choosing Leno over Letterman.

The dumbing down of America continues. Ev'r see Leno interview his public on the streets asking them simple political, history, or geography questions?

Says all about the venue chosen.

The "news" doesn't always greatly show what's going on in the world either. People who want good news need to read the papers and the small, indie websites.

Is there a point in this country where you couldn't have done that? Feel free to answer this directly.

How you like my new avatar? Pope Leo XIII, famous for his overall greatness and concern for the working class and unchecked capitalism, but also not a socialist. See, his ideas are like mine. That's why he was great. :D

Don't know what you mean by the bolded part because if it's market capitalism then there's no such thing. It is benevolent and leads to an increased standard of living for labor.

As far as Pope Leo XIII goes, I don't know much at all on what he said. I just did a quick search over at Lew's, because Tom Woods contributes there and is a devout RC. I only had time to catch this line:

Rerum Novarum, Pope Leo XIII insisted that there was no inherent antagonism of interests between labor and capital. This point strikes at the heart of Marxism, of course, since that ideology posited a war of class against class as the normal and unavoidable condition of the market economy. The Pope may not have realized the full import of the point he was making. The analysis that follows may, I hope, vindicate his claim more decisively than he may have thought possible.

So far that part is good. But it doesn't sound much like your ideas. You can check it out more if you want. You can even check into Wood's archive. Morality and Economic Law: A Reconciliation (http://www.lewrockwell.com/woods/woods25.html)

Maybe Obama should heed the advice of my mother. She use to always tell me to not put yourself in situations that you will regret some day.

Obama put himself in the situation of attempting to be humorous by going on that TV show. Now the President has to apologize for saying that cruel and hurtful comment.

If Barack didn't feel the need to stroke his ego by doing the "pop culture thing" on the TONIGHT Show, he would NOT have said that cruel and hurtful comment.

The presidents handlers need to do a better job.Shit, if this is some of the things that you can look back and regret. I wish i had more stuff like that, then the other shit i have done in my life that i regret. Shit, some of it i dont even regret, but i k new it was wrong and i would do it again, if i was put in that situation.

Yeah, he should have more important things to do like this:

http://img.wonkette.com/images/2006/04/president%20george%20bush%20throws%20out%20the%20first%20pitch.jpg

or this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v461/zete_tic2/bushthrowingfootball2.jpg

Note: I don't have a problem with Bush doing either, I just find it funny people slam Obama for being on the Tonight Show when Presidents go to baseball games and football training camps and not a word is mentioned.

First of all I have never defended bush for anything and I really dont think that going on Leno was that big of a deal.I dont care if the president bowls, golfs, picks brackets, plays fantasy football or goes clubbing. As long as its on his down time. The last time I checked Leno was taped during the day.(I may be wrong.Dane can you verify this?)

What I have a problem with is the timing. The president DOES, right now have better things to do then go on Leno,Espn and hang with George Clooney in the Oval office.

This whole Leno appearance was a way to try and distract everyone from the AIG fiasco. I want to know my president is working on our problems, not trying to distract me from them by being witty.I support our president and hope he succeeds, but I think the timing for this was just all wrong.

I don't care if the President goes on Leno, however it would sure seem to me that he's got better things to be doing at this particular time.

"You See........Jayleno......thisisnot....myfault.....thismess.....was....leftby.....the previous administration. LovemeI'm Prettyawesome....and fancy......myself....presidentJesus.

Yeah...And..."I bowled a 129 which is like something from the special olympics"....sorry but he's a douche bag.

Republican, Democrat or Independent...that's just wrong.

I'd say so, yeah! If the average family could sit on their porches or around the fire after dinner to read the Federalist Papers then I'd say they know the map of their time. I'm talkin' farmers even. Pick up a copy, see how easy those are to read. Better yet pick up a copy of some of the readers for kids around the 1920's. Reading level was much higher. More advanced vocabularies compared to similar age levels of today. I'd even say my mom and grandmother's generation knew the answers to simple geography, history and politics. It ain't rocket science.
