View Full Version : Alternate Reality Game 2: The Real NFL

Rain Man

This is the second of three game options that I'll be offering.

General Concept: Take over an NFL team and build/trade it through the draft, trades, and free agency.

Number of Players: Up to 32, maybe up to 40.

Time Commitment: Low to Moderate, but would need some people to help manage it.

Basic Rules:

Step 1: In Year 1, give me your top three choices of actual NFL teams you'd like to take over. I'll run a little optimization model to assign teams once we have at least 20 people signed up. The Chiefs will be assigned randomly if we have high interest there.

Step 2: You will receive information about the salary cap and your current players' salary cap hits. The salary cap will likely differ from the actual NFL salary cap for roster reasons explained below. For data reasons, all salary cap information will be on a one-year delay, so in 2009 you'll be working off 2008 figures.

Step 3: You may trade players or draft picks at any time other than Weeks 7 through the Super Bowl.

Step 4: In Years 2 and beyond, we will drop to 33 players at this point (with a requirement to be below the salary cap), and we will then hold a free agent draft, where (in draft order before any trades), players can sign any active player not currently on another owner's roster as long as they don't go over the salary cap. Owners can "pass" instead of drafting, at which point they drop out, and the draft will end when all owners have "passed". Any free agent signed in this process MUST be guaranteed a final roster spot.

Step 5: Immediately after the real NFL draft, we will hold a draft where you can obtain rookies via the NFL selection process. These rookies will have no salary cap value in their rookie year. (Recall that salary figures work on a one-year lag.)

Step 6: At the end of training camp, you will keep 40 players whose combined salaries are within the salary cap. You will fill out the remaining 13 roster spots with generic "scrubs" who have no name and no salary cap penalty, though you don't want them starting.

Step 7: In draft order, owners can select players who were dropped in Step 6 as long as they release another player and remain within the salary cap. Once an owner says "pass" in a round, they are out of the draft. This "dropped player" draft will end when all owners have "passed".

Step 8: At the end of the season, you will prepare a summary of who started at each position, totaling 16 games. For example, you may have Brett Favre starting all 16 games, or if he was hurt part of the year, you may have Brett Favre starting 9 games and Joey Harrington starting 7 games. If they were your only two QBs and both went down after 1 start, you'll start Favre 1 game, Harrington 1 game, and "Scrub" for 14 games.

Step 9: Via public voting, the teams are ranked from top to bottom, and a champion is crowned.

Step 10: In Year 2 (and beyond), the draft order is based on the rankings above. Each player starts with his/her core of 40 players, cuts down to 33, adds any free agents and any new players through the draft, and then cuts once again to a core of 33 players. Rinse and repeat.

If you're interested, please sign up below and offer EXACTLY three teams that you are interested in owning.

I'm trying to find some good boards, what are some chiefs ones where the fans wouldn't be too WPI? My post got deleted at NFLDC I guess they don't allow forum linking. I'm trying to find some places to spread the word but I might have been a little too picky.

I thought about arrowhead pride, and while I'm sure we'd get a response from there, I don't think we want a ton of people giving us page long posts about why Monroe is really the better choice for the Chiefs.

As other people come in, we'll continue to take teams away from the doubled-up people based on relative preferences. My goal will be to take a team that was randomly assigned to a person as opposed to a team that was specifically requested.

Rain Man

Your salary cap is:

$98,515,298

Your teams and current salary cap numbers are here. You need to cut your roster to 33 players before we go into the draft.

Our draft will happen AFTER the real NFL draft, so you can know where specific players are going.

Rain Man
03-31-2009, 03:52 PM
Okay, here's what happens from here.

1. Cut your roster to 33 players, staying within the salary cap.
2. In draft order of the real NFL (omitting trades), you can then elect to pick up any players not on a roster at that point. You can pass if you don't want to replace someone on your 33-man roster. Otherwise, you take one and you release one. If you pass, you drop out. This will continue until everyone drops out.
3. After the NFL draft, we will draft new players using the picks currently held by our real NFL teams. If there's a draft-day trade, you can choose to accept the trade or reject it. If either team rejects the trade, it will not occur. (This rule will evolve in Year 2 as our rosters start to diverge from reality.)
4. After training camp, you will cut your roster to 40 players from your initial 33, your drafted players, and any real off-the-street free agents in your real NFL team's camp (only those not currently on another owner's roster).
5. We'll then have another round of free-agent pickups as in Step 2.

I've made the call to not have any injury rules, as it'll make the game much easier. If the players at your position cannot fill 16 starts, you're going to start a generic scrub for the remainder.

Question to players: what about moving positions? For example, if you lose all your defensive ends and have three good tackles, can you designate a tackle to move over, or are you just going with scrubs? I can go either way.

So long as he's graded as playing however out of position the fit is, I don't mind it. There are some versatile players out there.

Also we should make a new thread in the draft thread so it isn't being constantly buried.

I noticed that the Chargers still had Mike Goff on this list, so I cut him because the RL Chargers did.

I would agree. In the event of major injuries, the person can make the call about whether it's better to put Damon Huard at wide receiver or go with a generic scrub.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals announced a blockbuster trade involving 6 players.

The Steelers are sending Ike Taylor (CB), Ryan Clark (S) and Hines Ward (WR) to Arizona in exchange for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (CB), Adrian Wilson (S), and Larry Fitzgerald (WR).

The Steelers also announced that Ben Roethilisberger (QB) has renegotiated his contract. He will play the 2009 season for the vet minimum.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of this GM stuff.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of this GM stuff.

You're as good as most Cardinals' GMs over the past 50 years.

Um, but good point. No trades between two teams a person controls. The "Herm calling Millen" rule will be in place, in that it is assumed that neither GM can figure out how to use the phone to call the other one.

I'm working on my salary caps now. As an FYI, use your roster from nfl.com to identify your 33 players, and the salary caps that I posted earlier.

If a player isn't shown on your salary cap, do the following to find out:

1. Go to http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/playerdetail.aspx?lname=holland&player=4497
2. Look up your player.
3. Use the 2008 number if available. If not, use the LARGER of the most recent year, or $250,000.
4. Some players will blow up the database for some reason. If this happens, go with $250,000. I think this only happens with the low-wage players, but if it happens with a high-wage person any other owner can appeal the $250,000 IF they can find the player's real salary cap figure for 2008.

Rain Man

Okay, here's what I'm doing with the Raiders' roster. Keepers are above, and cuts are below.

Okay, owners. You've got to get your cuts done. Post 'em here so the Associated Press can print them in the nation's newspapers.

OK i have my rosters but how do I copy them from the spread sheet to here I don't want to physically type everything out. Can you help me rainman?

I just select the cells and then do a copy and paste into the typing box. That should work, unless I'm misunderstanding your question.

yeah i'm having problems doing that it won't let me copy anything I can write my players but I can't seem to get the cap figures to transfer unless I do one at a time.

So you're in Excel?

Are your names and salary cap figures in different columns or all in the same column?

When do we need to have this done? I forgot about it and won't have time for a few days.

No great hurry. Probably the end of April.

Can someone summarize who's turned their rosters in and who hasn't?

easy enough. are we going to do a mock draft in here?

We'll do two drafts. First, a free agent draft of anyone who was dropped, which should go pretty quickly.

Then we'll do a mock draft of the rookie draft.

So what happens with me and whoever owns the Bears? Cutler for Orton and picks?

So what happens with me and whoever owns the Bears? Cutler for Orton and picks?

We assigned the teams before the trade, so the Broncos own Cutler and the Bears own Orton. Any trades beyond, let's say, April 1st do not exist in our world.
