View Full Version : Home and Auto spinoff: What "recent" Car Models have vanished from the face of the Earth?

After the rebadge thread, I was noticing that the Mitsubishi 3000GT (and Dodge Stealth) are two cars about 15 years old that I NEVER see on the road anymore, like for the past five years or more.

What other car models have come and QUICKLY gone?

late 80's rx7's
late 89's Supras

Some of my favorite cars. Neighbor had a twin-turbo rx7, supras were sick I like the idea of a removable hardtop. MR2's were great too back before the "spyder".

I don't know what's disappeared, but I can tell you the most common car out there(at least in Iowa City) is a white pontiac grand prix. I've been on the lookout for this guy who drives one for a while now and I swear they are everywhere. I catch myself "mean-mugging" girls I see driving them when drunk.

It was wildly overpriced, only a two-seater, and of course like anything else GM built in the 80s it had quality issues.

One night I went to the Laugh Factory with my brother and his girlfriend and they brought their other friend with them ,this girl who was an aspiring actress. anywho, we saw the show then went back to our house ( we were both still living with our mom, my brother and his girlfriend too) and I took the girl into my room.

Well, one thing led to another and we ended up having sex. Thing is, the second it was over (and I mean THE VERY SECOND IT WAS OVER) I felt REALLY guilty and bad. See, I wasn't into banging girls for sport, I was more into just looking for who was gonna be my next girlfriend, and I felt bad we did this like that so fast.

So, I said, "Promise me something"
She said, "what?"
I said, "That we'll never do this again."

NOT THE THING TO SAY TO A GIRL THE SECOND YOU ARE DONE HAVING SEX WHEN YOU JUST MET HER A FEW HOURS BEFORE!!! (or maybe it is?)

She immediately says, "I think I'm going to throw up."

The next five minutes are filled with me apologizing and trying to explain myself as she is getting dressed. I felt so bad. Well, I walked he out to he car and we continued to talk while leaning against her DODGE TURISMO!!!!

That's what even reminded me that this even ever happened! I even remember that she turned on the radio and "Mad about you" by Belinda Carlisle was playing.

Thanks Demonpenz!!!!

It shared its engine with the turbo Mustang SVO and it was rwd. I think it was just before its time. I bet it would have done pretty well in the early 90's if they lightened it up and marketed it as a sports car instead of luxury car.

I've seen 3 in my life and they were all at dyno/performance shops becoming "sleepers."

The Sebring, Breeze and Cirrus were built on the same platform, (JA platform) I don't believe the Avenger was. I'm thinking it was on a Mistubishi Galant platform (JS?). Maybe the coupe version of the Sebring that came out in 2001(ish), but the original cloud cars were their own platform, IIRC.

I never see them anymore and it was only 3/4 years ago they were everywhere.

EDIT: I see what you're talking about. It was the little 1995 coupe Sebring, yup, definitely the same car. In either event, I see a bunch of the Sebring/Stratus/Breeze sedans rolling around, I don't see any of those little coupes.

ehh, I don't think that's right. The Avenger and sebring Coupe were practically the same car. Maybe they both shared a mitsu platform? Now, the Sebring JXI convert. was a seperate platform, a bigger car. The Cirrus came later and was a much bigger car, sharing a platform with the Intrepid i think. Later, the Avenger was replaced by the stratus RT, and shared a platform with the sebring and 3rd gen eclipse.

I haven't googled it, nor am I a Mopar expert, but I'm 99% sure that's how it went.

One car that seemingly disappeared but now I see frequently is the last models of the Mercury Cougar, which were produced for (IIRC) three years starting in 1999. I had a '99. It looked great, handled great, and had a huge hatchback that was extremely useful. Unfortunately, the thing was a complete dog (the Vibe I had later accelerated faster) and rode like a stagecoach. I didn't keep it very long. Seems like I didn't see any on the road for years, but recently I've noticed them all over the place. I guess they held up well.

I had a 2000 Cirrus in college, it was the same as a Stratus (or Breeze, but the breeze had the 4 banger lifted from the neon and was dangerously under-powered).

Mikey is right, the big car was the LHS (folks had one, it was an awful pig of a car to drive).

My 1979 Ford Mustang caught on fire at a Gas station, That Blew. Not the station, the situation.

Another piece of crap. The first car I owned was a '77 Monza. I ended up selling it for $100 and a ride to the bus station when its engine blew up in West Virginia. :D
My mom had a 77 Sunbird for 10 years, which was basically the same thing, an underpowered and overweight POS. GM had no ****ing clue how to build a small car back then, I think the doors on that damn thing were 500 pounds each, she had to have the door bushings on it replaced twice. The engine was shot by the time it had 50K miles, by then it used more oil than gas. The only good thing I could say about it was that it looked cool, kinda like a mini Trans Am.

Yeah, my Monza was a nice looking car, but God it was a piece of crap. The first week I had it (I bought it used in '83) the driver's side window fell off the track down inside the fucking door, just as I was attempting to roll down the window and tell a girl about my brand new car. I sure impressed the hell out of her.... LMAO

My Monza wasn't a hatchback, didn't have the rounded back end. It was blue with a white vinyl top. Neat little car. Too bad it was such a piece of crap.

I already told Bugeater about it, but I had a '76 Monza coupe in '83 and it was an excellent little car. Decent mileage and nice looking. I had a second one a couple of years later and it never gave me a problem with the drivetrain but had some suspension issues.

It seemed like it was just the luck of the draw back then whether you got a POS or not.

In the car's defense, I was 18-19 when I owned it and beat the hell out of it.

I wish they would get rid of those ugly boxy KIAs but I guess they are pretty popular. IMO they look like a car designed from a cardboard box.
