Awesome!

The Cowboys and Texans shared the Dallas market in competing football leagues in the early 1960s but never settled the matter of supremacy on the field.

They will get a chance this season. The Texans, who in 1963 moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs, will play the Cowboys at Arrowhead Stadium. The NFL on Monday granted the teams permission to wear their original uniforms and helmets from their inaugural seasons of 1960.

“Personally, that’s something I’m excited about,” Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said. “Even though the Cowboys weren’t part of the AFL, their history is linked with that of the AFL and the Chiefs.”

The Chiefs will wear the same throwback uniforms and helmets for two other games this season. Both will come against a rival from the AFC West. One will be at Arrowhead, the other on the road.

The game against the Cowboys might mean the most to Hunt. His late father, Lamar Hunt, founded the Texans and the AFL in 1960. The NFL launched the Cowboys that same season to battle him for the Dallas market.

The Cowboys chased the Texans out of town after three seasons. Because they played in separate leagues, the teams never played one another.

“I have no doubt my father challenged (Cowboys owner) Clint Murchison probably many times during those three years,” Hunt said. “I’m sure the NFL told Clint he couldn’t play a team from that upstart league. So we’ll finally have a chance to do that.

“This will be a fun way to remember what happened 50 years ago.”

The Chiefs and Cowboys have played eight times in the regular season since the AFL and NFL merged in 1970. Dallas won five times.

Rams throwbacks are technically throwbacks to L.A. Colts throwbacks are technically from Baltimore. You just don't think about it because they didn't used to be the L.A. Californians or Baltimore Marylanders.

Chiefs to Unveil "Throwback" AFL Uniforms in 2009 (http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2009/03/24/chiefs_to_unveil_throwback_afl_uniforms_in_2009/)

Mar 24, 2009, 2:38:00 PM

The National Football League has officially granted permission to the Kansas City Chiefs to wear replicas of their original uniforms and helmets from the club’s ‘62 AFL Championship season during three select games this season. The Chiefs, originally founded as the Dallas Texans, will wear their “throwbacks” along with the seven original American Football League members as the franchises join to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt’s creation of the AFL.

The Chiefs “throwback” look will feature helmets with gray facemasks and a Texas-shaped decal with a gold star showing the location of the city of Dallas. Jerseys for the club’s “throwback” games will include a pair of patches that honor both the Chiefs 50th anniversary and the AFL’s 50th anniversary. Kansas City will don these replica uniforms when they host the Dallas Cowboys at Arrowhead Stadium and against two AFC West opponents yet to be determined (one home date and one away date).

In addition, the NFL will honor the AFL’s 50th birthday on its 2009 Kickoff Weekend with a Monday Night Football (9/14) doubleheader featuring club’s from the AFL’s first season. The first game will send Buffalo to visit New England and the MNF nightcap will be an AFC West battle with Oakland hosting San Diego. The Chiefs are also scheduled to unveil a 50th anniversary logo and host a series of events throughout the year to commemorate the franchise’s 50th anniversary.

Seriously - our franchise was originally based in Texas. Who gives a flying f#ck if we have the old logo on our helmet for a few games?

I guess I shouldn't be surprised but I can't believe this is a big deal, even on CP. It would absolutely defy logic for the rest of the original AFL teams to wear their original unis and have the Chiefs pick one the fans prefer. Is anyone going to see the TX on their helmet and actually be confused? Or do you really hate TX THAT much?

If we were throwing back to the 'Pyongyang North Koreans' I could understand the problem.

I don't see it as an "insult" to Kansas City or the Chiefs at all, it's simply that there IS NOTHING ELSE to "throw back" to.

I mean, we could trot out some ancient cleats and possibly the helmets from the late 60's/70's with the ULTRA HUGE Arrowhead on them, but the footwear would slow the guys down, and those old helmets would probably get them killed in today's game! ROFL

The problem is that this isn't just a style or a color, this actually shows a outline picture of another state on the uniform.

The problem is the picture of the other state that is on the helmet is still active in the NFL.

The problem is the other state on our helmet will actually be our OPPONENT in one of these games.

It's beyond stupid

Yes, we understand that your, among others, understanding of the history of the Kansas City Chiefs is lacking. Maybe we can convince you to educate yourself though. Try watching the History of the Kansas City Chiefs (http://www.mywavv.com/Scripts/ChiefsHistory.htm). Which C-MAC has been so kind as to provide you the opportunity to watch at anytime you please.

The Dallas Texans aren't just the team the Kansas City Chiefs USED to be. They ARE the Kansas City Chiefs, they are Lamar Hunts heart and soul, they ARE the NFL. Anyone who doesn't recognize this, is an idiot. You should be honored to have the opportunity to see their likeness displayed proudly by the Chiefs, and yet...you are not.

In response to this mindset brought forth by a few "uneducated" Chiefs fans on this board, I've written this rebuttal. I admit I borrowed heavily from Wikipedia, but re-wrote a lot of it, b/c I didn't care for the way it was all written. All in all, you should get the point.

Lamar Hunt loved sports, and most of all, in the late 1950's, he loved football. His dream was to bring professional football to his hometown of Dallas, TX. So, in 1959, on the strength of his great inherited oil wealth, Hunt applied for a National Football League expansion franchise. He was turned down. At this time, professional football was a distant second to Major League Baseball in the hearts of the American people. The thinking among NFL executives was that the league must be careful not to "oversaturate" the market by expanding too quickly.

So in 1960, Hunt decided to respond to the NFL's decision. Hunt took it upon himself, along with fellow Texan and oil man K.S. Bud Adams of Houston(who had also tried and failed to be granted an NFL franchise) to form the American Football League. Hunt and Adams rallied six other like-minded wealthy men to form this new league. The group of the eight founders of the AFL teams was referred to as the "Foolish Club." Hunt's goal was to bring professional football to Texas and to acquire an NFL team for the Hunt family. Hunt became owner of the Dallas Texans and hired future hall-of-famer Hank Stram as the team's first head coach.

In his first words to his team, head coach Hank Stram said to his players and personnel, "I don't know how long this league is going to last. I don't know what will happen, but when the end comes, I want to make sure, that we are going to wind up being, the winning est team, in the history of the American Football League".

Later in 1960, in response to this move by Hunt and the "Foolish Eight" the NFL, who just months before had turned down Lamar Hunt's request for an expansion team, created the Dallas Cowboys. A strategy designed specifically to drive the AFL out of Dallas.

The Dallas Texans won the AFL Championship in 1962 over the 2-time defending champion Houston Oilers in the longest professional game ever played as of that time and were one of the most successful AFL teams in the league's early days. But the Texans' success failed to draw fans in large numbers, as the Texans had to compete for fan loyalty with their cross-town NFL rivals, the Dallas Cowboys.

Though the Texans/Chiefs had always considered themselves to be vaunted rivals of the Dallas Cowboys. The two teams never faced off in competition while residing in the same city. I for one, consider this match-up to be quite fitting for the AFL's 50th anniversary, and one that I know Clark Hunt, wishes he father were still alive to see.

It is obvious to you, what the Chiefs do for you and Kansas City, but you should open your eyes to what Lamar Hunt and the Texans did for the Chiefs. Without the Texans, the Chiefs, and the NFL as we know it, would cease to be.

The effect the AFL has had on football have been long standing. The rosters of the AFL were always stocked with a certain number of players who would have excelled in any league -- and that number grew as the 1960s progressed. The best AFL coaches and owners, many of them new to the pro game, brought color, excitement and important new strategic and marketing ideas to pro football, which had often been dominated by play-calling which overrated the value of eliminating mistakes and underrated the element of surprise. While the NFL was always almost certainly the better league as a whole, the best teams of the AFL were increasingly the equals of any team in the NFL.

The AFL also substantially raised football players' salaries by frequently bidding against the NFL for the top college stars. It was the NFL's concern for containing salaries, more than anything else, that led a reluctant NFL to accept a merger between the two leagues in 1970. The older league could no longer claim to be far superior because by then the AFL champion New York Jets had defeated the vaunted Baltimore Colts of the NFL to win the Super Bowl. The Chiefs' triumph over the Vikings the following season further showcased the AFL's ability.

Today's "descendants" from the AFL, the Patriots, Bills, Jets, Titans, Broncos, Chiefs, Raiders, Chargers, Dolphins and Bengals would not have existed if it hadn’t been for Lamar Hunt. What’s more, the NFL’s Cowboys, created specifically to drive the AFL out of Dallas, would not have existed. Neither would the Vikings, an NFL franchise that was given to Max Winter to pull out of the original eight-team American Football League; nor would the Falcons, which the NFL gave to Rankin Smith to deter him from the AFL’s Miami franchise. Neither would the Saints, whose franchise was granted by the NFL after certain Louisiana congressmen pushed the AFL-NFL merger to completion. Or the Houston Texans, created to replace the Houston Oilers after they moved to Tennessee and became the Tennessee Titans. Thus, fifteen professional football teams would not have existed in fifteen cities today, if Lamar Hunt had not had the vision and the courage to “fight the establishment”.

In 1972, Lamar Hunt became the first American Football League personage inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A true testament to the lasting effect his life has left on the game of football. The trophy presented to each year's AFC Champions is named the Lamar Hunt Trophy. In 1984, Hunt was also inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

Also, if you are truly unhappy with the Chiefs decision to wear the Texans helmet, please don't refer to http://www.jotform.com/form/90822940333 for options. As far as I know, I don't believe the Chiefs ever wore but one of those symbols on their helmet. I could be wrong, and correct me if I am, but I don't think they wore any but the Arrowhead.

If you REALLY want to see a different CHIEFS throwback helmet, check out the 1:49 mark in History of the Kansas City Chiefs (http://www.mywavv.com/Scripts/ChiefsHistory.htm) on C-MAC's page.

Though, I think doing so would be a huge disrespect to Lamar Hunt.

I understand where the Chiefs team evolved from and i understand the AFL and how it merged with the NFL. I also understand that the Hunts are basically Texans hanging out in KC making a living. I understand all of that and i imagine that is why Clark Hunt doesn't have a problem putting on his cowboy hat and boots and singing "They eyes of Texas are upon you" or some such goofy crap. Still doesn't mean i want the Kansas City Chiefs playing a game with a stupid picture of Texas on their helmet.

Everyone has valid points to me. But I still don't like to see my team representing another state. Where have the Chiefs spent the vast majority of their existence? The Chiefs are more the KANSAS CITY Chiefs than they could possibly be the Dallas Texans. This team is ours now, it does not owe any allegiance to Texas. It started there - so what? Our country was shaped from numerous immigrants from all over the world. We don't sing another nations national anthem, we sure as s**t don't wear someone else's military garb, our flag doesn't represent an outside nation. We are independent and have our own identity now. Sure it's great to remember and celebrate history, I just personally disagree with the manner it's being done here.

Texas can suck my weiner. I could care less about any "homage" to the history of a football team I happen to root for. I've been a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs most of my life. I was never a fan of the Dallas Texans. I would never ever, ever be a fan of the Dallas Texans. I appreciate Lamar taking the team out of that hole and giving us a team in my part of the country. That doesn't mean I have to like a state of Texas sticker on my teams helmet... since I can't stand the place.

I understand perfectly why they're doing it and I don't even actually have a real problem with it. I just hate Texas and have no allegiance to the dufunct Dallas Texans. **** the Dallas Texans. I prefer the Kansas City Chiefs. They aren't the same thing in my book.

Those are 49ers colors. I used to like the 49ers, but come on. Have some pride in our Ronald McDonald stylings. We're here and we're queer!

No, 49ers use a darker red. Anyway, who gives a shit? I've never liked the yellow. If they want to call it gold use GOLD. That's the one change I would instantly make to our uniforms were it in my power.

Why do you have such an inferiority complex? It is not an insult to Missouri.

It has nothing to do with an "inferiority complex." (And what do you care? Shouldn't you be hanging out somewhere on Hotel Street this time of day/evening?)

As I said before, the Chiefs were only "Texans" for 3 years. They've been the "Kansas City Chiefs" for over 40. The Chiefs were in the AFL longer than the Texans. The emblem is just a dumb idea.

Now if this whole thing was to honor the ORIGINS of the Chiefs, then you'd have an argument. BUT IT'S NOT: It's to honor the AFL. By doing this, you're telling the city and state that has supported the franchise for these many decades that the ONLY choice for a throwback uni includes a hemet emblem of another state that accounts for a tiny percentage of the franchise's history. I don't get that. We're not talking about the Tennessee Titans and Houston here. Come on now.

Hey, I'm not writing my congressman and I'm more concerned about the Chiefs winning a playoff game. Bit it's the thread topic and I think it's a stupid idea. That's all.

Back when they were talking about field naming rights, I got so pissed that these jackoffs at the Turdalition would sell out the Arrowhead name, but God-Forbid we do a Uni Update, that I told them to, and I quote;

"Why don't you get on the phone to McDonalds you fucking sell-outs, and tell them we'll be happy to change the name to McDickWeed Field, and don't forget to mention the greatest selling point of all; company colors built right in"!

They were the Texans in 1960, not the Chiefs. How fucking hard is that to understand? People are making a huge deal over basically nothing.

Now if they were keeping the Texas helmets for good, it'd be a big deal. So for 3 games they'll be known as the Kansas City Texas. Who the fuck cares?

My, aren't you testy. FYI, Hotel Street has been cleaned up a lot, it really isn't bad at all now.

The Chiefs have had essentially the same uniform since moving to KC. The logo is a little smaller on the helmets is the only change. Might as well not do it at all if we are just going to put a slightly larger emblem on the helmets. I think it is a great idea to wear the Texans uniforms. Hell, the Donks are wearing their much hated original uniforms, that is much worse than us having Texas on the helmet.

For the record, I've never liked Texas. But that is irrelevant here.

You appear to feel threatened by this, which sounds like an inferiority complex to me. Why else would you see it as an insult?

Hell, those 3 games they'll still be known as the Kansas City Chiefs, they aren't changing their name. They're just wearing the old uniform. It is less than no big deal. It amazes me to see so many on here butthurt over this.

He's got a relevant point.

The thing that bugs me about it, is that the Raiders will be the Oakland Raiders, The Broncos will be the Denver Broncos, the Chargers will be the San Diego Chargers, and who will WE BE again?

C'mon, you have to find that just a little unsettling, yes? Two of those three games are going to be against division rivals, at least ONE of them on the road.
Do YOU wanna' go to any of those three stadiums and sit through THAT verbal shitstorm?
If so, you're either a glutton for punishment or a better fan than me I guess.

I like Texas. It's a state I'd gladly call home.

That said, can't say I'm crazy about having its likeness on my team's helmet.

I'd actually be ok with the helmet change for 3 games if they keep away from the white on white uniforms. Every time Herm tried to rehash those, it was hell.
