Were there less tourists than usual? Last I heard the US issued a warning to tourists to avoid Mexico.

We had originally planned to go to Mexico for our honeymoon this summer but thought about changing it. Did you see anything out of the ordinary?

Tourism is too much money to let thugs get in the way. There was nothing out of the ordinary, the locals were all nice and kind. A Great time! Thugs are in border towns.

That's nice to know. Was the Mayan Riviera anywhere close to where you guys are at? That's where we had planned to go.

The fiancee and I have never been to Mexico so we weren't sure if there were Mexican druglords just waiting around to kidnap people or if that whole area was fairly Americanized.

The Federales keep Cancun free and clear of any criminals in the resort areas. If you go downtown you need to keep your eyes open a little more. But you have to go downtown at least once or you will miss Pericos. Ride the crazy bus to get there.
However you can stay in your resort area your whole trip, have a great time, and never see a Mexican that doesn't work for you.

The boat ride to Isla Mujeres is worth the trip if you are with your lady. The water is beautiful and the island is fun (shopping and eating and drinking).

Live in a well known place (e.g., Hotel Zone in Cancun) or great resorts and not in the other side of the town.

My buddy and I tried to save money by living in a crappy place and we regretted that decision dearly. I would say, rent your own car and make sure you abide by the rules (seat belt, no speeding, etc) because police officers will be eying you since you are a tourist and will give you tickets or force you to give them bribes.

If you are going to spend time up north of Cancun (Mexico city or close to the borders) then you should really be careful.

We spent some time in Mexico city, I really enjoyed it but we had our fingers crossed when we landed in a secluded area.

Amazon.com reviews for hotels and Yahoo answers are your friends :)

Personally, I would select Cancun...the "Hotel Zone is centralized...and easy to protect. We didn't go downtown this year, just in case!

Why is the water so blue?

No algae and sediments? Lack of pollution?

No blue water up north.

You're going to love it!

The most amazingly blue-green ocean water you've ever seen!

If you're a golfer, playa has several great courses near resort areas.

Expedia. $2300. for Hotel, transportation and flights. Would have been less, but it was during Spring Break. Cancun is very inexpensive.

How long were you there?

The only problem that I can forsee right now is that my fiance is in the Air Force and she's now allowed to go down to Mexico right now.

We might have to look at going though after she gets out.

4 nights and 5 days...wish the Mrs. had booked a few more days, it wouldn't have been costly.

Save some money, go to an all inclusive.....make the time. Life is about experiences...not just toiling away at the job. At 48 years old, I realise that life is short...I will enjoy it all that I can!

Easier said than done... money really isn't the main issue, but finding time is a big factor. My days consist of working, taking care of a baby, and sleeping. That is my life. But I'm glad to hear that others, (such as yourself), can find the time to bask in exotic places. Perhaps some day I may join the masses in this thing referred to as "vacation".

I'm going to Playa del Carmen may second for 7 days. I've never been to mexico and can't wait. Tickets we're very cheap. It ended up costing us about 800 a person for all inclusive, flight and the shuttle from the airport to and from the resort.

Plenty of sand here. This is Playa del Carmen, BTW.
