While I know the inevitable shit storm of dumbassery that will reign down on this thread I was hoping that I may get some good ideas here.

Im trying to get some ideas of uncommon names (nothing like apple or rain) for a little girl. Lets see what the Planet has to offer!

Hmmmmm....I love this game:

Alexandria - Lexi or Alex...such cute nicknames
Addison - Addy
Sophia - it's the greek word for wisdom
Caryssa - Pronounced careesa....it's the greek word for grace; reese for short

I'll have more in a little while!

Do you have a short or long last surname?

If you have a long name, the first name should be shorter....if your last name is "smith" you can pull off longer first names.

Naming a child is one of the hardest things imo. You're affecting that kid the rest of their life. A good name to me, may be horrible for you. Just don't make the kids name a joke or really odd spelling.

One of the rituals I went through with our "name list" was to plug my nose and say the following

"gentlmen, put your hands together and welcome the lovely Pearl the the stage"

If I could realistically imagine hearing that, it was stricken.

What we did was make a list together of like 20 names we liked or wanted to consider. After a little time, each day, we'd each put a strike through a name.....Once the name had an X, it was out of consideration. That way, if she had a name that I really didn't like, I could at least half veto it.

The only issue we had with that, was my wife was stuck on a name, that had family significance for both of us, but it was the name of one of my ex chicas and I couldn't overlook it.

You could always take a foreign name and alter it. Iphigenia could be changed to Geni, or Nia, just for an example. Or, you could keep the 'foreign style' spelling, and go with a Nadia, as another way to go.

Also, there's always the fictional heroine type of name:

If any of this is too far out there, my apologies. I just didn't know how unusual would be too much.

It was actually quite good in it's early years. Even when the soapy stuff gets ridiculous, they have actors on there who can sell the scene with a look. It's no Sopranos, but it's no Knots Landing either.

Names tend to run in cycles of 50 to 70 years. If you want your child to be cutting edge, give her a name that was somewhat unusual but still relatively popular in the 1940s. Here are the names that were the 400 through 600th most popular in , and I've bolded a few that are unusual and nice.

I listened to an audiobook called "Freakonomics" (highly recommended for numbers and stats guys) and they had a chapter about baby names. They tried to predict what would be the most popular baby names in 2015 using stats about what higher-income people were starting to name their kids now.

In the past, the names that higher-income families have used have trickled down the pay scale and become the popular names 10 years or so later. So here's your glimpse into the future. Let's meet back here in 6 years to discuss.
