This is long, but a fascinating read. Especially if you're someone that has any interest in all the development going on in Dubai.

http://digg.com/d1oA2o

This talks about how the government is allowing companies to enslave foreign workers, and how failures from around the world go there to get rich and act like a master class.

If this article is in fact accurate Dubai is in for a fall that will make the rest of the world look like a sunny Sunday afternoon.

This is a retarded post.

I've always wanted to see Dubai, I love architecture and the artist expression of buildings. There is no place in the world like Dubai, especially when looking at how much they're doing at once.

After reading this article I can't say I'm surprised, but it does reflect on how much better we have it over here in the US, and how far we've come in our short history.

It's a well written piece, very eye-opening. (plus it has 2,500 diggs)

No, this isn't capitalism.

And the big myth is that conservatives don't want all to succeed. Because we think government hand outs will stifle personal growth and ambition we are somehow labeled as hatemongers, while the folks that dish out welfare destroy the lives of millions of people and are lauded as heroes.

Dubai is a microcosm of the world in general. Northern latitude peoples (North Americans, Europeans, Japanese) live fat and happy, while the browns (****ers, spics, punjabs, islanders, i.e. people from the southern latitudes) do the manual labor that we benefit off.

They're paid exactly what they agree to receive in exchange for the work. Unlike in Dubai, where they're promised one thing and then paid (or not paid) an entirely different amount.

Anyone, and I mean ANYONE, who thinks that any of this is remotely acceptable really needs some kind of psychological help.

Sahinal Monir, a slim 24-year-old from the deltas of Bangladesh. "To get you here, they tell you Dubai is heaven. Then you get here and realise it is hell," he says. Four years ago, an employment agent arrived in Sahinal's village in Southern Bangladesh. He told the men of the village that there was a place where they could earn 40,000 takka a month (400) just for working nine-to-five on construction projects. It was a place where they would be given great accommodation, great food, and treated well. All they had to do was pay an up-front fee of 220,000 takka (2,300) for the work visa – a fee they'd pay off in the first six months, easy. So Sahinal sold his family land, and took out a loan from the local lender, to head to this paradise.

As soon as he arrived at Dubai airport, his passport was taken from him by his construction company. He has not seen it since. He was told brusquely that from now on he would be working 14-hour days in the desert heat – where western tourists are advised not to stay outside for even five minutes in summer, when it hits 55 degrees – for 500 dirhams a month (90), less than a quarter of the wage he was promised. If you don't like it, the company told him, go home. "But how can I go home? You have my passport, and I have no money for the ticket," he said. "Well, then you'd better get to work," they replied.

Sahinal was in a panic. His family back home – his son, daughter, wife and parents – were waiting for money, excited that their boy had finally made it. But he was going to have to work for more than two years just to pay for the cost of getting here – and all to earn less than he did in Bangladesh.

When you're enslaving people there will be a huge price to pay. This country paid a big one with the Civil War. Had we not had slavery there would have been no Civil War and thousands and thousands of American's wouldn't have died.

And if you would have read the article you would have read about how the economy there has come to a screeching halt, and how the entire thing was built upon unsustainable debt.
