Overview
In a perfect world, Washington would be the featured player on the Buckeyes' defensive unit in 2009 rather than vying for a roster spot in the National Football League. Regarded as one of the best pure athletes ever recruited by coach Jim Tressel, off-field issues and problems with the coaching staff, along with inconsistent play, prevented the talented athlete from realizing his potential.

Washington greatly improved his draft outlook with a sensational performance at the NFL Combine and in post-combine workouts. His 11-foot, 3-inch broad jump, 45-inch vertical jump and 6.84 three-cone drills certainly opened the eyes of league personnel in attendance during those performances.

Yet, his career never matched his athletic talent. There were flashes of brilliance, including 100 yards gained on three fumble recoveries and 104 yards gained on two interception returns. But in 37 games that included 24 starts, his great leaping ability was rarely on display, as he managed to deflect just four passes.

Washington was rated the best defensive back in the state of Indiana as a senior at Franklin Central High School. He was also a standout big-play receiver, as he caught 47 passes for a 17.0-yard average and 10 touchdowns that campaign, receiving a two-star rating from Rivals.com. In addition to football, he excelled in track, capturing the state long jump championship as a junior and senior. He graduated as an Honor Roll student.

Washington enrolled at Ohio State in 2005, but spent the season performing on the scout team. He was named the team's Outstanding Freshman in 2006, starting nine games at boundary cornerback and nickel back in 2006. He produced 41 tackles (28 solos) with a stop behind the line of scrimmage. He also caused two fumbles and recovered another that he returned 48 yards.

As a sophomore, Washington moved to field cornerback, starting all 13 games. He registered 39 tackles (29 solos) that included his only sack as a Buckeye. He recovered a fumble, broke up two passes and returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown.

Washington was suspended for the team's first two games of the 2008 season for a violation of team rules. "I'll be honest and admit I made a mistake," he said. "That's the only way you can handle it. The best thing to do is just be honest."

When he returned, he spent most of the season as a reserve, starting two games at boundary cornerback. He managed just 22 tackles (18 solos) with a fumble recovery and a 34-yard interception return.

Washington joined receiver Brian Hartline and running back Chris Wells as three Ohio State underclassmen to declare for the 2009 NFL Draft. A bit of an unknown before his arrival, he dazzled everyone, as his vertical jump and broad jump figures were the best of any player that attended the 2009 event.

Extremely polished 3 year starter for the Buckeyes who should be returning for his senior year in 2009, but declared early, and looke fine at the NFL Combine running 4.53/4.50, and leaping a Combine-best 45" in the vertical jump. Also posted an 11'3" broad jump in Indianapolis. At the Ohio State Pro Day, Donald ran 4.52/4.54, did a 4.13 short shuttle and a 6.70 3-cone drill.
Strengths

Very good cover man. Has fluid hips and keeps the play in front of him generally. Enough speed to track down receivers, and enough "ups" to win in jump ball situations. Good at jamming at the line, with his plus size. Good speed allows him to keep up with even the fastest receivers. Really experienced with 32 career starts entering his senior year where he figures to maintain his starting status. Solid against the run where he is not an overwhelming force, but will come up and make the tackle if need be.
Weaknesses

Was having a very good Fiesta Bowl against Texas before flying by WR Quan Cosby and missing a tackle allowing the receiver to walk in for a the game clinching TD with 16 seconds to go. He really needs to learn how to break down and make a tackle. Also, has only 3 picks in his 3 years of starting, which is not very good. Is not the strongest guy around.
Projection

In my opinion he is slightly overrated, but he should still go in the late-second to mid-third area due to impressive measurables and big school pedigree.

2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
person
Donald Washington, CB, Ohio State
Donald Washington's choice to enter the 2009 NFL Draft was a curious one. With Malcolm Jenkins gone he had a chance to earn more playing time and raise his stock tremendously. However, Washington is extremely talented and could surprise people at the next level. Washington has good size for a corner, and sturdily built to hold up well in run support. He's got very fluid hips and can turn and run with receivers when he needs to. Washington plays his best when he's playing zone defense and can use his athleticism to attack the ball and make plays. He recorded 102 tackles during his three year career with the Buckeyes. Washington also added 3 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, 4 passes broken up in coverage, and forced a fumble in limited playing time. He returned both of his interceptions for touchdowns and two fumbles for over 40 yards each, showing off his big play ability. Washington is a late round prospect right now, but could see his stock rise if he works out well for NFL teams.

Donald Washington was one of the biggest surprises of the NFL Combine. He only ran a 4.55 second 40 yard dash, but everyone ran slower than expected. The dazzling part of his performance was his 45 inch vertical leap and his 11 foot 3 inch broad jump. Washington obviously has the explosiveness to play corner in the NFL and may have shown enough for someone to take a flier on him late in the third round.

Donald Washington lowered his 40 yard dash time to 4.52 seconds at his Pro Day workout. He is a bit of a question mark for some teams, but has shown the athleticism to develop into a very good number two corner. Washington will likely be selected in the mid-to-late part of round three.

He had his head on the wrong side of that tackle.

The biggest problem wasn't the CB/S play, it was the LB play. They didn't drop into coverage and that defense had the CB/S 7-8 yards off the line. If your defensive alignment has you that deep, there's no way to cover a quick slant without help from the LB's.

Pioli and Haley on paper, are motivating me to stay away from AH, cancel my Sunday Ticket and find other ways to spend my Sundays in the fall.

Don't get me wrong - I hope I'm wrong.

Didn't like the Haley pick as HC (don't think NFL players will put up with a failed aspiring golfer who acts like he has a King Kong penis) and the lack of FA and this last pick are just downright confusing.

No matter how much lip service Pioli gives to the contrary, 2009 looks like a throw away season.

Exactly. If this 4th round pick solidifies our young secondary for 3 to 4 years then great. Lord knows we took the long term approach at linebacker by signing all the stop gaps. We do need help on the O-line now. This tells me Waters isn't getting traded. We really need to replace Sackintosh but it 's not going to happen today.

Herman Johnson - OG

Seth Olsen - OG
Alex Boone - OT
Jose Valdez - OG
Tyronne Green - OG
Roger Allen - OG

But not only was I hearing all over CP about OFFENSIVE talent in this draft, most experts seemed to agree.
While those problems could be addressed in free agency. Do we really want to risk addressing them in next years(defense heavy) draft.
These moves also go against what Pioli said about the TG trade, in that, it was a move they felt would make this team better both NOW and the future.

I think that's because last year when Albert was out we had the worst line in the league. We've added Goff and Waters is butt hurt, so any potential starter or added depth at this point is seen as an upgrade by most. Every coach and every GM says they want to win now. Every coach and every GM WANTS to win now.

Only some of them, however, are willing to take their chances with "now" in order to ensure the future. And it's obvious that Pioli is one of those guys.

Furthermore, I keep reading this BULLSHIT about the line. It's bullshit. They've done ALOT with the line just by changing one guy.

Adrian Jones was an ABOMINATION at RG. He was so bad that it's VERY possible that it affected McIntosh as well. Mike Goff is an immediate upgrade at the position and that instantly helps whoever is going to play RT.
