Wow.

On the same day we speculated that the stage could be set for the Second Annual Brett Favre Retirement to be followed by the Second Annual Brett Favre Unretirement, the Jets threw the NFL world a curve ball by releasing Favre from the reserve-retired list.

Per Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Jets announced the move Tuesday night.

The move means that Favre is an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team.

Including the Minnesota Vikings.

Favre wanted to play for the Vikings last year, but the Packers refused to grant him an unconditional release. At one point, the Packers accused the Vikings of tampering with Favre, based on communications between Favre and Vikings offensive coordinator Darell Bevell and head coach Brett Favre. (The charges were found to be unsubstantiated.)

Green Bay held firm in its position, and Favre ultimately accepted a trade to the Jets. Under the terms of the deal, the Jets would have owed the Packers three first-round draft picks if they had traded Favre to the Vikings, Bears, or Lions.

The Jets reportedly declined to release Favre in February, when he retired for the second time in less than a full year.

“[Agent] Bus [Cook] and Mike [Tannenbaum] have been talking about this for a while,” Favre said in a statement. “Nothing has changed. At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football.”

But unless Favre is planning to sign a one-day contract to officially retire (again) with the Packers, there’s no reason for the Jets to make the move if Favre has no intention of returning to football.

Our guess? Once Cook sufficiently and successfully pestered the Broncos to trade quarterback Jay Cutler to the Bears, Cook embarked on an effort to pester Tannenbaum to release Favre, if for no reason other than to clear out any potential impediments to the wild gray hair that might crawl up Brett’s butt in the next month or two.

The next step for Cook? He’ll start pestering Bevell and Childress to start pestering Brett to provide the final piece for one of the most talented teams in NFL history at every position except the one that counts the most.

I hope he stays retired, otherwise Madden might come back

The Vikings theory might have some legs, they were after him before, and although they acquired Rosenfels, he's a career backup, and they decided not to address the QB position in the draft either.

Favre was ****ing awful last season, he's not even an upgrade from Rosenfels at this point.

He was actually pretty decent the first half of the season. At one point the Jets were like 8-2 then went in the tank after that. He did have that 6 TD game as well.

He was decent at first. And then he was the worst QB in the NFL in the 2nd half of the year and was the main reason the Jets tanked. He's old, his arm is dying, and he can't play in cold weather anymore.

Now wonder they accused them of tampering!

I for one, would love for Jackson and/or Rosenfels to be (for whatever reason) unable to play this season...and for the Vikings to sign Favre.

If and only if, he could lead them to the NFC Championship game. Kinda like Montana led the Chiefs to their last AFC Championship Game in 1993. That would be way cool.

Goddamnit motherfucker; this isn't exactly "Old Man River" we're talking about here! If the Vikings can provide proper protection, it's not like the motherfucker can't throw a football!

Everybody and their half-cousin knows Minnesota is one QB away from making a legitimate run, so why not sign Favre for a season? Couldn't be worse than that indecisive shithead they had standing behind the line last year, no?

Give the man one last run in the Division he knows best, and we ALL win! It's entertainment, it's rivalry, it's fun! And we aren't doing shit anyway this year!

Goddamnit; Farve to the Vikes!

What?

Dude, Favre is the kind of guy that could single-handedly send all 4 of our starting DB's to the Pro Bowl over the course of the 2 games we'll have against the Broncos.

Let him sign in Denver - if they're going to implode, they might as well make sure it's THOROUGH and SPECTACULAR.

Or he could throw for 6 TD's against us and beat us again in the closing mintues.

Latest buzz is that new free-agent QB Brett Favre, 39, who could end up with the Vikings, has hired a personal trainer at home in Mississippi.

Favre's sudden arrival on the market makes you wonder if that's the reason the Vikings haven't spent much on free agency this year. Maybe they knew something.

The ESPN Monday night Vikings-Packers game Oct. 5 at the Metrodome, if Favre is the Vikings' QB, could set a viewership record.

I was mad as all fuck that the Chiefs let him walk out of Arrowhead with that win in 2007; unacceptable.

Let him become a Vike and piss off Green Bay fans even more. Who gives a fuck; that's good TV.
