I have eaten in alot of places in KC, but their meat was really salty, the sauce was confusing, the people just yelled at my family pretty much, it was loud and dirty too. I had the short ribs, someone fill me in with what is good about the place. For comparison some places I like to eat

Ok Joe's
Jack Stack
BB's lawn side bbq
Zarda

bar food
Jerry's bait shop
Callhihans

I don't dislike Gates. When I go there I enjoy my meal...however it isn't nearly as high on KC BBQ list for me as it is for most other people.

For me Arthur Bryant's is where it is at.

I usually can't stand Gates BBQ at all. I have never liked it. I grew up with Donnie Zarda, and the worked at Zarda's, so I am partial to Zarda's BBQ.

Having said that, one of our vendors at my job recently catered a meeting, and they brought Gates BBQ, and the ribs I had were excellent.

Some days the food is good, other days... horrible. The two constants are: loud service, and an incorrect order.

Gates sauce is sweet like you can get at any road side BBQ stand. They serve frozen crinkly french fries like fast food places. There are a lot of better places in KC.

I used to eat at Gates if it was convenient. That was until they were written up by the health department for general filth and mis-handling of food.

Gates is very perplexing, because of the inconsistency of service. Sometimes I breeze in, line moves quick, food is perfect, wonderful world.

Other times the chick behind the counter has to ask me what I ordered three or four times, the fries are cold (I hate that) the beans are colder (I really hate that) and the ribs in the combo plate are a very end piece that is mostly gristle.

So, you never know what you're gonna get. The 12th and Brooklyn location seems to crank out the best food, 40 Highway in Independence is the most inconsistent.

They serve crinkle cut fries. Gates does not.
Gates makes a sweet sauce, but it's not their flagship original. You can't call the original "sweet" because it really isn't.

Now there's a decent bar down where the old laser tag was called 107.

I got arrested in their parking lot on Thursday night and had to spend the next 14 hours in jail for trying to break up a fight. One of my buddy's got tasered and the other got the police dog sicked on him. St. Joe cops are good also.

The last time I was there was about 4 years ago as well and the beef still had "Tony Lama" stamped on it. It was like trying to eat a boot. Add to that the "Health Department interventions" and I will not go back.

Growing up in KC I thought Aurthor Bryant's was the best with Gates as a fast follow. My Grandma loved Smokehouse.

I get back to KC only every couple years for the last 25 years and on each visit I've noticed a steady drop in the quality of Bryants, but not so much in Gates. Has the drop with Gates been recent? I have not been back in the last 3 years.

I am coming back this summer to visit family. What can I get the best burnt ends these days? Who has the best baby back ribs? Where is Jack Stack located? When I visit family in the summer it is all about the Royals and BBQ.

When the Chiefs open camp in St. Joe I'll make my visits in late July so I can catch a practice or two. I have not seen a Chiefs camp since they worked in Liberty.

Having eaten at all of the places named in KC, Bryant's, LC, Gates, Stack, Joe's, and Rosedale are all very good to great. The key when you're at Gates is ordering the beef "lean"...I've gotten some really fatty meat in the past, but it always comes out well when I order it lean. Bryant's is always great, IMHO. If you don't like the original grainy sauce at AB's, then you don't like Bryant's. It's just that simple. LC's does everything well...but the beans with burnt ends in them is silly good.

As for the fries...? Who cares? Fresh or frozen, they're french fries...it's something to dip in the sauce in between the meat bites. It's nothing to become pissy about.

As for the ST's comment about Gate's sauce being "sweet"...ROFL Your memory has faded, Skip. It's a spicy sauce with celery seeds in it. Come on now!!!?

Bryant's, circa 2002-2006 was my hands down favorite. However, since 2006 it has held up somewhat, but definitely taken a turn for the lesser. They have to be under new management, b/c they weigh the food now, and the cooks behind the glass can't talk to you and you can't talk to them. It actually pretty much killed it for me. It's both appalling and heart breaking to know that the Casino has better cue than the original, that should be impossible.

However, after leaving for NY for 2 years and returning to find it altered: I highly suggest LC's or Joe's for your "whitebread" choice. Bryant's definitely still makes the cut, but it's dropped a few pole positions for me.

BBQ Dining: Smokestack - Jack Stack
Whitebread: LC's - Joe's - Bryant's
Sauce: Gates Extra Hot - LC's - Joe's - Sweet Baby Ray's

I loooove Gates sauce, but the meat is losing quality I think.

I have the sauce sent to me in LA by the case and BBQ with it myself, and it still rules. When I go for bbq in KC, it's usually Jack Stack, but I on occasion eat at Gates, and while it definitely isn't the best, it's been at least good.

If I worked there, I'd yell at the people in line, too. Everyone just stands there like an idiot.

It's overrated. Last time I was there, a 20ish year old black man had a bulldog puppy tied to a Huge Chain in the parking lot. The dog could hardly walk because the chain was so heavy but this guy kept on dragging it along. A truly sad sight... (No Michael Vick jokes please.)

Im a fat bastard who loves BBQ... I do like Gates sauce... I can't stand Arthur Bryants sauce, but I love their meat.

To me, the best BBQ would be Arthur Bryants meat, Gates Sauce and Zarda BBQ beans.

That would be awesome.

It's always amusing though seeing first time Gates customers get all flustered when they're unexpectedly yelled at in the back of the line. It sort of puts them on the spot when they totally weren't expecting it. You can see some people's social anxiety kicking in as they look around thinking "Why is this woman yelling? Is she looking at me? Ohh geez, I don't know what I want..."

Guess it depends on the Zarda. The one that used to be by my place (out S... 135th & Metcalf) was great. The one in Olathe, off 75th(?) was not as good IMO.

The beef on bun is good, and I don't mind the sauce.

Bryant's meat is probably better, but only one of their sauces doesn't make me want to throw up. And Bryant's fries aren't that good, never been a big fan of the hand-cut soggy fries.

I still prefer Jack Stack and Zarda, even though they are a bit over-priced.

Ok Joe's
Jack Stack
BB's lawn side bbq
Zarda

bar food
Jerry's bait shop

yeah but you missed the good inning. Jose not even making an effort on what looked to me like a routine flyout. Or the routine grounder back to the pitcher that should have been an inning-ending double play that ended up in center-field. Just when I think the Royals have turned the corner, they go and pull some crap like yesterday. I got so damn frustrated I may not be able to make it till Friday night this week to down my 12-pack of natty light.

I have not seen a Chiefs camp since they worked in Liberty.be careful going to chiefs training camp here in st. joe you might get beat up
