Chiefs are ranked.......Wait for it.....................

29th.

29. Kansas City
Could the Chiefs be this year's Dolphins, a team that gets a quarterback and magically starts being competent? Don't think so. Not unless the front seven of Kansas City is a lot better than it appears right now. The Chiefs surrendered an alarming 5.0 yards per rush last year, and that's not going to change overnight just because they're playing a 3-4 now and because they picked a couple of big bodies, Tyson Jackson and Alex Magee, with their first two choices in the draft.

Off him Jack Stack and he'll take us up to 12.

OK, I understand the criticism. In fact, I AGREE with the criticism. Our run defense was the worst part about last year's team, but the lack of sacks overshadowed it.

I just don't understand where he gets "that's not going to change overnight" because we picked Jackson and Magee. We've changed as many as 5 guys in our front 7. Why ELSE would it change overnight? Or is he just saying that it won't ever change? Because his basic premise doesn't make any sense.

While i agree with the premise about our team on paper. It's pretty meaningless because we don't know what impact new coaching, and hopefully a mentality, will have on the overall productivity of our team.

Or all the new players.

His basic premise is that the front 7 sucks and just because we got 4 or 5 new starters, that isn't going to change.

I'm struggling to figure out how it will EVER change if getting new players isn't the answer.

The run D was awful, but even if you change everything it won't be any better because Peter King says so.

The team's changed coaching staffs, switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4, added 2 old players to its linebacker corps, is moving last year's first round pick to end, is counting on a rookie lineman to step up, and hasn't shown that it's got a viable nose tackle. It shouldn't come as a surprise that he's got them ranked down by the bottom of the barrel.

It's May. It's a power ranking. It's just makework.

If it makes people feel better, Steelers fans are furious because there favorite team is ranked #2 instead of #1.

It's not a surprise. I think pretty much everyone would agree on his CONCLUSION.

The logic he used to arrive at that conclusion is questionable, at best.

Nor should we. He doesn't deserve a 2nd contract at this point.

BOO!!! :cuss:

Nothing says things can't change before the season starts. However, overblown expectations get players booed, coaches fired and front offices gutted.

It takes time to build a team into a contender, especially when that team is as bereft of talent as the Chiefs were. When you break down teams for talent, where do you really think the Chiefs ranked last year?

Several notches above where our coaches would have been ranked.

Until they prove differently, the Chiefs are a returning 2-14 team.

Until the rebuilt D line and conglomeration of aging and out of position linebackers form a front 7 to make us believe they'll improve the run defense, I don't see how we can argue for a better ranking at this time.

Nobody knows how good the defense or offense will be.

TOO MUCH CHANGE.

You don't just plug and play people into an entirely new system and expect immediate results. Even the few quality players we have on the squad will struggle at first. The first few games could be VERY ugly on both sides of the ball.

The defense is going to be pretty different. In addition to the 2 draft picks that should both see some time up front, the linebackers are completely different. Only Johnson is back, and really he was the only pretty good linebacker we had last year. Vrabel and Thomas are both upgrades.

I don't expect miracles, but I do expect a much better pass rush and better run support via the linebackers...time will tell, but I would have put KC around 20th...rather than 29th.

There were years in the 90's where from the beginning it was all leading up to an epic Cowboys-49ers showdown.

This year the decade closes with CBS having a year long build up toward an epic showdown between the top 2 teams of the decade, the Patriots and Steelers.

That will be a cool drama to watch unfold.

Our run defense isn't what he should be concerned about, it's our pass rush. I have little doubt that our run defense will be significantly better than last year.

about where they deserve to be, So many changes, old LB's added in FA, Lost TG, still ?'s at QB.... No true #2 WR, Diapers need changed at RB...

This team is in a serious transition... 4 wins would be an absolute miracle next year.

We do that and Haley should be coach of the year, Pioli the greatest GM in the history of the game...

Sorry mostlyfullcan, but there is no way this is a 5 win team... We are going to need a truck full of fiber bars just to keep our geratic ass LB corps regular for games...

wat?

Getting 5 wins isn't difficult, even with a highly flawed roster. If we don't win 4 or 5 next year then Haley didn't do his job.

Just like Herm had a keen eye for talent and could fix defenses?

Its going to take 3 years to un-fuck this team... Herm left this team worse than he found it...

I have to agree with you- i was trying to be optomistic. :)

I love the Cassel move-but everything else has kind of sucked. I lot of folks hate tony G on here-but he was my fave and Always drew lots of attention. Who is Matt going to throw to??

Our O line still seems weak as well.

The biggest disapointment is that thug, ho slappin, gun toten, white folk hatin, crybaby bitch Lj is still on the team. :cuss:

what was our record last year again??/

who is our kicker again???

this team has too many holes to fill for one off season-especially when you stay out of FA and reach in the draft.

the Jackson pick will haunt us worse than Simms.

Nobody with any knowledge of football will be upset about the Jackson pick 5 years from now. The only ones that will be upset are the ones who insist that linemen with less than 5 sacks are garbage.

It certainly doesn't take into account the rest of the team or the building philosophy of Pioli( remember all that Special Teams jack we picked up before the draft? ).

I like being underrated at this stage though. Keep's egos low, and noses to the grindstone. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if The Don put the word out:

"You don't praise SHIT until I TELL YOU TO".

Vegas has us at 5.5, and they are usually spot on. Realistically, there were several games that we should have won last year that were lost in the end of the fourth quarter. We had Thigpen at QB and Herm as coach. We won two, and should have won at least two more. I don't see where there can't be some degree of optimism regarding the Chiefs next season. Just having Haley calling plays along with Gailey should be reason enough, and not having a discombobulated ream job of a defense because Herm is trying to shove a worthless Cover 2 down Gun's throat, and every player on defense has not a single friggin' clue as to what they are supposed to do will be good for at least two games next season.

So, here's my theory:

1. Chiefs were 2-14
2. Haley versus Herm = 2 wins
3. Pendergast versus Herm & Gun cluster fuck = 2 wins
4. Cassel versus Thigpen = 2 wins
5. Team adjusting to Tony's abscence = -1 win

Total: '09 Chiefs: 7-9

Good lines take time, especially on defense. But if we can build one as stout as the Pats showed against the run at the beginning of last season, I'll be very happy because when you add the Arrowhead Mojo Factor to the equation; that's one bad motherfucking brick wall of an aggressive line.

It's early, but I truly believe that Haley and Arrowhead are a match made in heaven. It's a Voodoo/Mojo thing, but I'm calling it nonetheless.

Our run defense isn't what he should be concerned about, it's our pass rush. I have little doubt that our run defense will be significantly better than last year.

Why?

You have two rookies who are going to be integral parts of the D-Line rotation, questions at NT, and two LBs that have lost a step or 5 that will be relied on heavily.

I don't see this defense being any more than marginally better against the run.
