Just saw his interview about the local media's treatment of Hillman and the Royals. It was a tirade of expletives against the radio assholes who have no clue what they're talking about and spewing their venom. Rock on, George! Jack Harry is the biggest douche bag in the world with Kevin Keitzman holding the nozzle.

I wonder what Sports talk radio would have been like during Bretts heyday if it had been around??

"Brett is ok, but is he really worth 1mil a year?" "He doesnt hit for enough power" "I dont like the pitching change Howser made last night." blah blah blah....etc, etc etc....

It will be on all the channels at 9 or 10. I was watching Jack Harry's Channel 41 and they aired the whole tirade. I was surprised, but hey, they're looking for ratings... even if they throw their own under the bus.

Never understood the anger towards sport talk journalist types. They are doing their job. They wouldn't have any listeners at all if they didn't have strong opinions that people can agree/disagree with. Hell, the people that constantly bitch about them wouldn't continue to listen to them if they didn't do what they do. If you don't like it, don't listen.

btw George Brett is full of bullshit. Sports would virtually cease to exist if the only people who were critical of Coaches were people that had been coaches. It's the foundation of sports fandom.

Because the aforementioned are clueless imbeciles? It doesn't matter if they played or not, managed or not, but at the very least they should understand the game! There's no "they" if you watch the video. It's straight to the point and calls out the lamest of KC TV/radio; Harry, Keitzman, Twibell.

He mentioned 2/3 announcer guys specifically AND THEN said "the rest" which includes your precious soren "nutsack-licker" petro. If you think George Brett is so right then you need to shut up about being critical about the sports media UNTIL you have actually been in the sport media. That's the rules George has set for whether you can be critical or not, correct?

George is right. The fact is a lot of the criticism this year came from his handling of his relievers and in particular his unwillingness to use Soria. Then it turned out that Soria was hurt, but it was too late by then because we all know it'll be a cold day in hell before your average armchair Manager admits he made a mistake. Instead they go with their initial incorrect impression and keep on looking for reasons to criticize Hillman. You see a lot of the same shit from posters on these forums.

I agree that some of the locals go overboard on Trey. They can question him all the want. The part I don't like is how every move they question they act like he was wrong because he's in over his head and this is unique to Hillman. I've lived in like 5 MLB markets and listened to shows in all of them. The mistakes Trey makes are basically the exact same ones managers in every other city make. They're the same ones fans in every city question.
Twibell is like a broken record. We got it- you think Olivo should catch more than Buck. Hooray. OH MY GOD! TREY'S PLATOONING CATCHERS! STOP THE PRESSES!

I agree.

Hillman is a fucking clown, and of this there's no question. But for Brett, I'm sure it has pained him to see his once proud franchise become a fucking joke. If he's a bit too sensitive to criticism of the organization, however accurate, he's earned that right.

He must remind me of some assclown I encountered in a former life, or something. Not only that, but his opinions often seem to be based on nothing more than a transparent and sometimes almost desperate effort to generate ratings - at least, that's how I sense it. When he and that Jack Harry guy are on the air together, I can literally feel the IQ points evacuating my brain and I have very few to begin with so avoiding that guy is self-preservation. Problem is, the other station in KC isn't anything to write home about. It's a shame, really, because I can have a difficult time getting Chiefs news and information here.

Thank ESPN for any dick with a mouth to be able to opine on any sports topic, once they took guys from nowhere and made 'stars' of them, it was fair game for people to open mouth-insert foot, and call it journalism. Couple that with the fact that NOBODY listens to AM radio, and you have a sure fire way ensure the downward spiral.

Rating don't matter, except to the people who sell ads. Point being that unless your iPod is broke, or your iPhone is out of range, or you can't get to a Wi-fi hot spot, most people aren't listening to AM radio. (unless you are driving an un-pimped out 70's vehicle with a coat hanger for an antenna). Ooop's, probably stepped on some toes.

I don't know, I listen to AM radio all the time, and so do a lot of people. I don't know how you figure ratings don't matter. I don't want to sit and listen to music at work and hear the same songs all day. I almost never tune to FM radio in my car either.
So you're saying no one listens to radio at all basically. It's weird there's so many stations then.

I saw it more of a warning shot to Harry in particalar, that he is not going to treat Moore or Hillman like he CP. Did Carl go too far during the 1990 season in his "punishment" of Harry and Fortune? Probably, but that doesn't excuse JacK for not letting his anger @ Carl go. IMO this became an addiction to Jack. When CP resigned he "fix" dried up. Jack is looking for a new "source" and it will be either Dayton or Trey IMO Jack just hasm't decided who it is yet.

IMO if George Brett really wants to help Trey and Dayton out, he needs to tell both men what went in KC in the summer/fall of 1990 re Jack Harry. They need to know what Harry is capable of doing.

Without reading through all of this, just want to report what I heard Brett say on 810 today talking to KK. He apologized for cussing, and stood by the remarks otherwise. Clearly was feeling bad about the whole thing. I could sense he felt he had spoiled an otherwise spotless reputation.

Keitzman was cool to him. Actually said (paraphrased), "you're George Brett! People in this town love you. If you were a classic car, this wouldn't equate to even a grocery store cart dent in your side!"

Brett said he wished he had been allowed a do-over before it was aired on T.V., and asked Keitzman if that's ever allowed by media. Keitzman's response: "Some guys will allow a do-over, but Jack Harry isn't one of them."

Brett ended by saying he has always worn his emotions on his sleeve, and obviously still has a high level of passion for the Royals' organization.

Those two asshats were completely out of line regarding that situation and deservd what they got. It was bush league journalism what they did to Okoye that summer and CP had every right to twist their arms.

That said, Harry never let it go nor did CP. So both of them are to blame in many ways.

Please allow me to translate what the Hall of Fame third baseman truly meant when he called out Kevin Kietzman, Jack Harry, Roger Twibell and Dave Stewart for their criticism of Royals manager Trey Hillman.

People who are offended by swearing rarely understand the true meaning of a profanity-laced tirade. I donít have this problem. Having grown up inside my dadís neighborhood tavern, I learned at a young age that there are at least eight different ways to use the word motherF-bomb, and really only two of the eight uses are pejorative. (You can e-mail me if you want to know the eight different ways to use it.)

My point is, I know exactly what Brett was trying to say Monday at the Joe McGuff charity golf event. The key to translating a profanity-laced meltdown is to avoid focusing on what is said and pay careful attention to what isnít said.

George Brett didnít mention these three names ó Joe Posnanski, Soren Petro and Danny Clinkscale. JoPo, Petro and Clinkscale have all been critical of Trey Hillman. Petro, who hosts a radio show on 810 WHB-AM, is arguably Hillmanís toughest critic. Clinkscale, Kietzmanís sidekick on WHB, regularly questions Hillmanís moves. And Posnanski, my colleague at The Star, has written a couple of columns this year tearing into Hillman.

Why were they left out of Brettís rant?

Iíd argue itís because theyíre highly informed about the Royals, attend numerous games, frequent the clubhouse and attempt to ascertain both sides of the story. Theyíre fair, and their criticism is authentic.

Kietzman, Harry and Twibell are clueless, and much of their conversation about the Royals comes from a very dishonest, self-serving place. Itís an attempt to grab ratings.

Even with the benefit of a map, compass, a pack of hunting dogs and GPS, Kietzman, Harry and Twibell couldnít locate the locker-room facilities at Arrowhead Stadium, Kauffman Stadium, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State or Pembroke Hill High School.

They criticize from the safest distance possible. And they hit the airwaves and feign an insiderís knowledge.

Honestly, I find it all rather amusing. But I can see why it would eventually bother someone like George Brett. The guy loves the Royals. The team is just beginning to show signs of real life.

And Harry and Twibell grasp for relevancy by playing an insincere and cowardly game with Hillmanís every decision. Itís not really a game with Kietzman. Itís who he is.

Kietzman had Brett on the air Tuesday and, among other things, made a ridiculous analogy comparing Hillmanís task to what Kietzmanís high school ďmanagerĒ faced leading Shawnee Mission Midwest to the 1972 Big School Championship. Brett, to his credit, did not laugh out loud. Kietzman finished his brown-nosing session by explaining that he just couldnít figure out why the rest of the media donít like good old Trey Hillman.

Brett ó and I suspect Hillman, Dayton Moore and everyone else within the Royalsí organization ó is OK with Hillman being ripped and grilled.

Brett would just prefer that Hillmanís most vocal critics be the journalists/broadcasters who spend time at the ballpark confronting Hillman face to face.

I give Brett credit for taking the time Tuesday to conduct interviews with Twibell and Kietzman. Brett refused to back down. He apologized for his profanity but stood by his message.

Heís too polite to properly translate, so Iíll summarize:

1. Harry is way past his prime with terrible TV ratings.

2. Kietzman is a talented but disingenuous opportunist.

3. Twibell is hoping he can fool Entercom into supporting his golf habit for another year.

Those two asshats were completely out of line regarding that situation and deservd what they got. It was bush league journalism what they did to Okoye that summer and CP had every right to twist their arms.

That said, Harry never let it go nor did CP. So both of them are to blame in many ways.

Just a reminder is was Jack Harry and Gene Fox that did the story. Don was on vacation that week. During the story one of the two called Marty a liar, and that sent it over edge. Don and Carl did have run in's but the Okoye story was not one of them. Don called out Carl for taking away the free media travel on the team charters, and for getting rid of the pre game invocation.

Once the truth came about about the Okoye story, Jack and Gene couldn't recover. From then on it was Jack vs. Carl for 20 years.

But the whole issue was that Okoye had a young child pass and Harry and the other guy tried to pass it off as he was holding out to force management to pay his teammates out new deals?

No. In fact a few years ago (2 or 3 maybe 5) a caller on the radio called Jack out about the story and he said something to the effect of...there may have been other factors the Chiefs were trying to hide from the public, but I stand by the fact a bigger contract was involved. At that point the call was cut off.

The Shanahan thing was hilarious. How Kietz had a mini rant about how the national media weren't giving poor old small-town Jack Harry credit, and Jack Harry called in to have his ego stroked. Then the whole thing fell apart. Then even when it was obvious it was never going to be Shanahan Kietz was still interviewing some NFL writer in the days after and saying, "Well, maybe this Shanahan thing isn't dead. Maybe it's still coming." and the guy was like, "yeah, no."

Just drives home the point that anyone who believes anything (or listens to the sewage) coming from that station, of KK in particular, isn't very bright.

Although I haven't listened in years, Petro was probably the exception to my statement above - although he's pretty arrogant for a sports dork who probably got his behind kicked on the playground on a regular basis.

I was absolutely fucking livid when Herm got fired and then two seconds later ESPN says Shannahan to KC. It should have been a joyous day and instead ESPN fucked it up.

I went grocery shopping after work at Wal Mart, a place I pretty much hate being in under ANY circumstances, and proceeded to hate-shop at full gusto. Throwing shit in to my cart like bricks, telling people to move their asses, and waiting for someone to give me a reason to let fly.

Nobody did. In fact, they stayed the hell out of my way.

I had to disagree with george he said the easiest thing to do is for fans media to sit back and say "this this and this" when shit goes wrong, that you would have done things different. For how much of an ass KK, Clinkscale, petro can be. Even when shit works they state facts to back up why they would have done shit different and what was wrong with the moves. The fact is Brett, Frank White, all these old school players still like to avoid the stats provided with them and would rather bunt players over, steal bases, etc. I have no doubt that Rany could probably whip out a stat book telling brett why a move is wrong and he would whip it out and piss on his stat book on the 17th green

I thought it was telling yesterday when KK kept saying to George: Don't worry. This won't ding you. You're George Brett!
His ego is so large he's oblivious to the notion that people might have thought Brett's comments could reflect negatively on KK.
Funny how he finds a way to get worked up about this stuff, but when 810 carried the Royals and Fescoe's credentials were revoked he had nothing to say.

Stats are for those not good enough to play or manage. Makes them feel part of the game. Players, Managers and Management all feel the same way. Baseball has always worked like that.

Well, Pioli would have them killed outright, so no-go there. I'm guessing their beef with the Royals has to do with bad game management, much in the same way Herm was just a god-awful field general. I don't know or follow baseball at all, but I'm guessing there isn't as much parity in the MLB system as there is in the NFL.
The Royals market doesn't help much either I'm guessing. It's probably hard to get good players to come to KC, so when a guy like Greinke starts to pop, the fans and the media start getting pissed because everyone around the "star" isn't playing up to his level.
And hardcore MLB fans are more vitriolic than football fans, and have been that way for a long time.

Milwaukee

Milwaukee has MLB, Jacksonville has NFL. Jacksonville has 1.3 Million people, Milwaukee has 950,000. MLB defines a city over the NFL. Baseball players and management know that and play it out. It has always been that way and it will always be that way. The media plays the same game as well.
