View Full Version : Other Sports UFC 98 Evans vs Machida

I really am looking forward to a couple of the fights on this card. Evans vs Machida should be a good fight, both guys unbeaten and very talented. For me it comes down to attitude and public persona which makes me root for Machida.

Hughes vs Serra has potential to be a great fight or a real snoozer, probably nothing in-between. I hope Hughes destroys Serra and his entire family. (Too much?)

Sean Sherk back in action after his suspension, should be a good fight with Frankie Edgar who is a really tough guy, kind of tailor made for Sherk though.

Machida is very talented, but his tendency to run so much isn't very entertaining to watch. I think he's going to beat Rashad though.

Hughes will dismantle Serra

Sean Sherk vs Frankie Edgar, well that could be fun.

It's hard. Most any other fight and I'd root for Rashad. There's just no reason NOT to like and admire him.

But go go go Macho.

He doesn't run. He evades. He can do it standing still.

I like both Machida and Evans, I just feel like right now Evans is at the top of his game. I don't see where his weakness will be for Machida. I'm like Katipan I guess, because I normally root for Evans, but I like Machida too. I think Evans wins it, but I still can't decide who I'm rooting for.
I think Evans catches him with one early in the third and it's over soon after that.

I really doubt that, Machida is as good on the ground as anybody at 205 he just hasn't had to prove it because he doesn't get hit clean. Evans is not a very technical striker and Machida will probably pick him apart and out point him.

You know I used to like Serra, he says some really funny stuff on TV. Since he fluked GSP he started coming off like a real dildo IMO. Hughes is kinda preachy but I can live with that, at least he was actually champ for several years not several weeks.

Did anyone see the UFC98 special on Spike? I dont remember them having one of these before, it looks like theyre trying to do a 24/7. It worked though, Im more hyped about the fight. I think Machida takes it. Both fighters are technically sound, and adjust well in-fight. Machida's never been rocked before, we'll find out how he takes it.

Look at Inoki slapping Machida out of respect in his first win...hah. This is the same Inoki that fought Ali and wrestled hogan.

I love Machida, boring fighter my ass...To me, UFC's only real job is to create good matchups that deliver when we watch. So if a fight sucks, it's UFC's fault for putting guys with bad chemistry in there together in the first place. At least that's the way I see it. And in that light, UFC 97 was just a bad show, top-to-bottom. Silva/Alves - and the rest of the card - sucked, but that by no means is an indication that each and every fighter involved couldn't have a great match on another night against a different opponent. Just happened that all the chips fell the wrong way that night. And then you get a show like tonight's....

As for the specifics of this fight, I think you saw near the end of the first round and then at the end of the fight exactly why Evans' corner had him come out the way they did. If he'd have been more aggressive, I think Machida would've just dropped him even sooner.

That guy's really, really scary now that he's getting knockouts. Brutal knockouts.

First 2 fights were yawners and I could have sworn someone said that Felipe was going to fight that night. Where was Felipe?? I love Felipe!

Other than that?

Holy shit that was better than some sex I've had. Machida controlled the center of the cage the entire fight. Evans was totally terrified to engage. I can appreciate the bloody carnage of two guys just throwing haymakers at eachother but it was far more compelling to watch someone get set up and knocked down. Like Machida was playing chess.

I was going to say dancing but I thought I'd leave the sport with some masculinity left.

Was super excited to see a bunch of women at the bar into it. Most of them had no idea who the guys were or what the fuck they were doing but they all screamed when the guy from Ames won.

Ironically, the "boring defensive fighter" was the one who kept attacking with power shots whenever he had an opening, while Rashad pretty much sat back and tried (unsuccessfully) not to get his ass knocked out.

The whole point of fighting is for me to hit YOU before you hit me or to hit you MORE than you hit me. Any 2 morons can stand toe to toe and throw haymakers all night. It takes more of a technician to do what Machida does and has been doing. I looked back at that fight and there didn't appear to be one single punch landed in over 3 minutes of round 1 but it was JUST as much Evans fault as Machida's. Something I haven't seen discussed on here (I could have missed it) is/was Machida's SPEED. That dude is very fast and quick on his feet and that has always been the big hype about Evans. I doubt Evans was scared but it appeared that way...he new he for the first time in a while he was in against a guy who was just as fast if not faster than him. I have watched the last several fights Machida had and he is as highly skilled a fighter as I have ever watched. Yeah, anyone can get caught, but this guy is going to pose a unique and difficult challenge to anyone.

Like I said, a big number of casual styled fans would much rather watch someone like Forrest Griffin because it's more exciting to watch even though in an actual strategy standpoint its dumb.

And in fairness here it's not like Machida is unbeatable, Tito Ortiz worked him in the clinch when they got to the 3rd round that he had no answer for other than to grab the fence.

Twice in the fight Tito pulled guard and Machida didn't have much to offer on top. Of course the second time Tito probably would have submitted him if they weren't so slippery. Also Machida looked to be getting pretty tired for a guy who wasn't doing all that much so he must tire himself out with all his movement. He doesn't appear to be in particularly great shape, he's doughy and small of a LHW.

The era of Machida has officially begun. Rashad was the best matchup for him and look how that turned out. If Shogun gets back to Pride form then maybe he can give Lyoto a fight, but until that happens NO ONE will touch Machida. Rampage, Griffin, Cain, Evans, Jardine don't stand a chance against this guy.

He is the MMA equivalent to Floyd Mayweather, he doesn't get hit and picks you apart. If he can get the KO then he does it, but you will get outpointed otherwise. I think he will hold and defend the title for years to come.

Yeah I tend to agree.

I think the only way to beat Machida is either the guy will have to somehow take him down and be better on the ground than even Machida is or he'll have to be some really tall 205er who'd have a considerable reach to frustrate Machinda's in & out style.
