I recall a number of Onkyo acolytes here, so I pose.
My dad went Benedict Arnold and bought an Onkyo [SR706], I worked on setting his rig up but we ran into a problem with audio output.
First off, he has a cheapo DVD/VCR combo which the receiver has been very finicky about accepting it's digital signal. Both optical and coaxial inputs initially gave off a pure tone, and the receiver stated that it was receiving an incompatible signal. I finally got it to register by first plugging in the optical to his CD player, and assigning the jack to the CD player, then switching the optical over to the DVD player and reassigning it as the signal streamed.
That's secondary to what appears to be the bigger problem. I can't get a pure DD or DTS signal to pass through from either the DVD player or the Satellite. With the DVD player, the receiver registers that it's receiving a DD or DTS signal in line with however I set the player [ie, DD if I set the DVD to DD, DTS if I set it to DTS], but it outputs in stereo and refuses access to any signal processing, or even pure audio.
With the satellite, it receives various signals, but treats them all as PCM. It will let us access signal processing of a stereo PCM stream [DPL II, THX, mono, cinema, etc] but doesn't give a straight or 5.1 output.
I'm back home, and I'm sure if I had more time to inspect the fine print and eff around with it, I'd figure it out. But I'm also equally sure that next time I'm home nothing will have been fixed and my mom will still be griping about him spending all that money for a stereo system.
So if anyone has any thoughts, brainstorms, surefire fixes, etc., I'd appreciate it.
P.S. - he hasn't run the Audessy calibration program yet, if that's a sticking point.
