Yes. So metal has "already been done" because its roots can be traced back to another genre? By that argument, blues was already done by African folk music.

to a degree, yes. but then again we can trace this all the way back to the greeks and birds singing...My point was that it's more obvious than ever...IMO.

We probably have peaked, on the whole. Especially in terms of originality.

Thankfully, I still find fresh, excellent, and even forward-thinking albums each year in a variety of genres (often especially in metal). It is no coincidence that the vast, vast majority of new music I listen to comes from far outside the reaches of radio play. People like cookie-cutter music; I don't and have to search hard to get away from it.

Bluegrass is a genre that I've been meaning to deeply explore for a while now. Each time I get the itch, I realize that I have no bluegrass... so I get lazy and just put on some old-school country.

I am glad I am not the only one That feels that way. I have always been eclectic with music. Listening to music for years was a major part of my life. the problem is I just do not get the same pleasure from it that I once did.

I checked out the Mushroomhead clip just for the heck of it, and well it could be the theme song for your been there done that comment. It like a lot of music it lacks originality and is nothing more than cliche performance. That is not a slam on metal although IMO it is one of the weaker musical genres of my time.

It always can thank Rap for IMO maintaining the least evolved and stagnant form of music. I guess I have digressed, my rambling point is I am waiting to be wowed again.

That quoted post doesn't express my opinion on the matter. My feeling is that there is a lot of fresh, original music still being made. Honestly, rap/hip hop produces quite a bit of music that isn't stagnant. You just have to know where to look.

Further dissecting your post: Mushroomhead is not and never has been a metal band. If you think that hard rock is equal to metal then its no wonder that you find metal to be weak. Furthermore, what do you mean by "weak?" Metal is probably the musical genre with the most complexity and highest level of musicianship apart from jazz and classical (which themselves heavily influence metal). I would never consider the metal genre to be musically weak. If by weak you simply mean that you don't enjoy listening to metal songs, then I can't object to that.

If you're looking for notes that have never been played, or to have them strung together in never before heard ways you're always going to be disappointed.
Music is a copycat business. That Mushroomhead song has some Life of Agony influence, and in many of their songs you can hear Pink Floyd licks.

I just threw a couple out there, I am in the middle of doing some things right now. I would have to put some thought into it. The Rejects are radio safe and are far from wowing me. I liked both you linked and could fade some of that while cleaning house or working on the truck. I have never heard of them

Those two bands are pretty darn mainstream. I'm surprised you haven't heard of Dream Theater by name. I chose those songs because they're sort of accessible (for metal, that is) while clearly defying the notion that metal is musically weak. There is a lot of structural complexity, time signature wizardry, etc. going on with those bands.

If you can separate yourself from the stupid corpse sounding asshole singing... I love the riffs in this video.

My bad on that. I had not read your metal threads. If the mods wish to delete this one I would have no objection at all.
It's okay. I was being dickish on purpose. I am surprised, because everyone on the board (excepting you, apparently) knows me as the "metal guy."

I still can't believe Slipknot is from Iowa. It's even stranger than people actually listening to them and enjoying it.

The older the Slipknot, the better.
