really? I'm not anti-Conan or anything, but I found it very lame.

It wasn't laugh-out-loud funny or anything (except for the doll museum aside and the reveal of the keys - I thought those were both great) but it was a nifty piece of editing and, more importantly, it emphasized the move to L.A. and established the fact that the show won't just be a coastal thing.

The sound mix for Pear Jam was pretty bad. Thats just a first show bug, I'd think. Other than that, and the fact that we didn't see much Andy, I'd say it was a pretty awesome first show.

I thought it was a pretty good show.

I was so happy when he did the "hip strings" at the start of the show.

It was a subtle nod to his real long time followers- that he won't water down anything, and he's still the same ol' Conan.

Jay was getting good again towards the end..he'll be missed. i think genuinely he's a good guy. I dunno how his show will do at 10.

Conan has potential at the tonight show, looks like he fits. Andy Richter needs to find his niche, he looked too excited.

Will farrel can kiss my ass. I find him funny once in awhile, but it annoys the fuck out of me when he acts the same with his stupid yelling. Talking/yelling over conan was bad.

Eddie Vedder sounded horrible...

Love Conan. Watched him since I was a kid and went to see a live taping in 2000. I don't understand why he had to move to LA to do the tonight show, though. Why couldn't he have stayed in NY and switched to the earlier time slot? Although the new studio is pretty sweet.

I am glad that he's on earlier now. Couldn't really stay awake for the 12:35am start and wake up for work at 6:30am.

Finally caught the opening two episodes on TiVo (been working). I thought they were pretty good, he's definitely more buttoned-up but he's still appealing to a younger and hipper audience than Leno. Last night's skit with shopping on Rodeo "Road" was pretty good; I can't imagine Leno dressing up like Vanilla Ice and wearing a "BITCH" beltbuckle. And Tom Hanks was funny, more of his comedic self, and it takes a good sport to be an Oscar winner and let Conan hit you with a giant meteor ball (Hanks fell over pretty good). And Green Day was loads better than Pearl Jam, who is stale and washed-up.

I think Conan will do fine. He'll continue to mine the "East Coaster on the West Coast" thing, with references to "going Hollywood" and his pale skin and so not-Hollywood looks. The ratings will probably take a hit, since Leno was appealing to older people and Letterman and Conan fight for the same demographic, but it'll be good. I'll keep watching, and I haven't watched a late-night talk-show in years...

The Johnny Carson type Tonight Show is over as of now.

It was over the moment Leno plopped his boring, simple-minded, excruciatingly mediocre ass behind that desk.

If anything, Conan is a return to the old Tonight Show sensibility. He's cool but at the same time is willing to make himself look incredibly dorky for a laugh. His set is a refreshingly stylish (in contrast to the garishness of Leno's neon monstrosity). He has a genuinely funny sidekick in Andy Richter and a bandleader who is actually pretty funny himself and won't yuk mindlessly at Conan's jokes. People worry about Conan connecting with "America", but Carson never had to change himself to be funny to people everywhere. I think Conan has enough Carsonian charm to make people buy into his weirdness rather than water himself down to be more accessible.

Universal studios had Will Ferrell on last week pimping his movie, now last night Conan had Anna Freil on, again with a trailer for Land of the lost.

Did you see the Steve Martin/Paul Simon show? It was painful. I mean, Steve Martin and Paul Simon were great, but Jimmy just COULD NOT conduct an interview with either one of them. He laughed way too much at their jokes, to the point where it was incredibly awkward for everyone. He asked dumb questions and couldn't keep up with Steve and Paul once they gave up and just started talking to each other.

His monologue isn't terrible, but he just doesn't seem to have any sort of knack for the job. Maybe he'll grow into it like Conan did, but at least Conan showed some flashes. Fallon is just flailing out there a lot of the time.

In other love-for-maligned-hosts talk, Carson Daly's new format is actually, gasp, tolerable!

Also, my crush on <strike>Mark-Paul Gosselaar</strike> Zack Morris has been revived after fifteen dormant years:

http://www.starpulse.com/news/index.php/2009/06/09/exclusive_zack_talks_saved_by_the_bell_r

Mark-Paul Gosselaar: If someone puts a gun to your head and says, "You know, you should do this reunion," like Fallon kind of has done -- and I love Jimmy by the way, I think he's awesome -- he kind of put us under the gun in a way. I wanted it to be a win-win situation for everybody. I said, as we were driving, to my wife, "Hey Lisa, what do you think if I went on as Zack Morris and that was reality? That Zack is alive, Zack is me and I just play the character Mark-Paul Gosselaar."

There were three things that I asked for. Number one: That I look into the camera and I do the time out. The phone was a big thing that I wanted to use as well. And [playing] "Friends Forever" with The Roots. And that was it, that's all we came up with, then I called Jimmy Fallon. I said, "Hey, Fallon, this is what I want to do." and he goes, "Well, wait, at the end you're going to say you're Mark-Paul?" I said, "No, I'm going to go on, never break character and that's going to be the reality." He says, "I don't know if the producers are going to be into that, but I'll get you in touch with my writer."

Mike: That's weird he would have a problem with that.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar: They weren't sure because they've never had somebody just come on as a complete character and never say they were not the real person. So we weren't sure how it was going to work out and how "Raising the Bar" would tie in and are they going to piss off the network because they didn't promote it in some way. During the up fronts I worked with the writer, Mike Dicenzo, and told him, "here's my idea." That's his script, it's 11 pages of his dialogue that he came up with. He came up with the Indiana stuff. I read your site, I guess that's common knowledge, but I completely forgot about that whole fact. And, yeah, I know that's absolutely ridiculous.

His monologue isn't terrible, but he just doesn't seem to have any sort of knack for the job. Maybe he'll grow into it like Conan did, but at least Conan showed some flashes. Fallon is just flailing out there a lot of the time.

Very few people thought Conan showed flashes. Of course everyone is all over his nuts now.

I think it is really fashionable to dump on new late night folks.

Universal studios is where Conan is taped at.

Universal studios had Will Ferrell on last week pimping his movie, now last night Conan had Anna Freil on, again with a trailer for Land of the lost.

That movie is a flop at the box office. Universal is trying everything they can to get it off life support.

I do like his new show though, lots of laughs.

re: Laughing during the jokes. I think the bigger joke is the idea of that actually being a criticism for a late night host. Literally, every single one does it. He doesn't even do it more than others, its not like it was when he was on SNL.

It's different. Conan wouldn't start to laugh/smirk while 'freezing' during Zach Morris' first time-freeze session where Fallon can't hold a straight face for 2 seconds.

Exactly. Conan tends to laugh at the audience reaction or when telling a particularly goofy joke. Fallon just has the giggles.

That chick from Land of the Lost was smoking hot last night.

I had only seen her on "Pushing Daisies" and had no idea she was from the U.K. and had that sexy accent. Then when she said she basically clenches her pussy muscles to keep from laughing.... Schwing! She just made my Top Ten Starlets I Want To Pound list.

And the L.A. River bit was funny too. And Duchovny is a weird but funny bastard; he should try stand-up.

I figure he would have had better material. But it was still funny.

My only neg towards conan would be to never mind that much about the applause, or the clapping. He keeps scolding the audience about. Just tell your jokes and go on.

The tonight has cease to exist, they just moves the Conan O'brien show up an hour. I'm mean Conan is just doing his same shtick and the show has the same feel to it. Maybe Leno brings the Tonight Show back an hour earlier and the whole thing is just a time move.

The Johnny Carson type Tonight Show is over as of now.

I have to disagree with you. Carson was always doing skits and getting into costume for the show. Leno on the other hand played it straight almost the entire time he was on the show.

Conan is more Carson than Leno ever was.

Norm is on this kick to try to be funny even with hack material, just by refusing to acknowledge it's hack. Check out the youtube outtakes of him on the Saget roast.

Maybe I articulated poorly. It's clearer in the Saget outtakes, but the schtick is he's a guy who knows he's being hacky playing a guy who is completely earnest in his delivery.

My favorite on the Roast is "Greg Giraldo, he has the grace of a swan, the wisdom of an owl, and the eye of an eagle, . . . Ladies and Gentleman THIS MAN IS FOR THE BIRDS!!!'

I dunno, I think the Twitter bit got pretty tired after the first night. We get it. Overhyped announcer, cartoons of doing various things to the bird that PETA will probably get upset about, and then some banal mundane comment supposedly "tweeted" by a celebrity, and Conan's deadpan response. It was funny the first time, for two minutes. They've done three or four bits on it now, and they're overly long and repetitive.

Eva Mendes, holy shit, she can talk about getting naked rubs from Korean women all day long and I'd watch her. :hump:

I liked the giant statue he "stole" the other night and brought in. And Shatner was off-the-wall weird even for Shatner; I liked when he gave Conan the finger and Conan got outraged and stood on the desk. :D

If NBC was hoping to sweep this under the rug, the late-night hosts will make sure it doesn't happen.

They f**ked this up big time. NBC needs to cut their losses. Pay Conan whatever exorbitant sum he's due. Let him walk to Fox. Give Leno back his 11:30pm slot, but DO NOT call it "The Tonight Show". Release a statement that NBC is officially retiring "The Tonight Show". Leno from 11:30-midnight, and bump the other two guys up a half hour (12-1 and 1-2).
