It will sync contacts / calendar with Exchange/ Google / Facebook

VERY VERY well - more than sufficient

Do I have to go through google to do that though? Or can I go straight from Outlook to Pre without a network of interfaces?

I followed this articles easy step by step instructions to install Homebrew Apps on my Pre. There is a free Golf GPS program there.

It took about an hour, but it was worth it. There are about 10 additional games like solitaire, tetris, blackjack, craps, chess, othello....nothing like crash bandicoot though

I have to charge mine every night, which is the same as all my previous smartphones. The Pre battery does drain faster than the others I've had, but whether there is 20% left at the end of the day or 35% doesn't make much difference, I have to charge it each night regardless.

So in sum, the battery drains faster, but as a practical matter it doesn't make any difference.

The battery does get a bit low but since this is my first day it is hard telling just how bad it is compared to my bb give me a week for a fair comparison

One thing that is hard to get used to is the keyboard though

I made the jump. It seems pretty easy to use so far (I've only scratched the surface).

I know that others have asked but I don't feel like digging. What are some must have apps? I scored Accuweather and a dinning app since they were listed under most preferred.

Is there a free app for Outlook sync (I'm not on exchange and I really don't want to use gmail)?

What are the recommended settings? I remember earlier mentions regarding wifi?

Anytime that you want to change the quick launch bar at the bottom of the screen you have to hold down the icon you wan to boot and then drag it wherever you want it. Then drag the new icon that you want onto the quick launch area.

You can use the hold/click method to move other icons around too.

I got the tether set up on the phone and the USB drivers set up on my laptop. When I get it all connected it's just a local connection and I can't get out to the internet.

If I switch my laptop back to the regular home wifi while I'm still tethered it's also a local connection.

Disconnect the tether and the home wifi goes back to normal operation.

I posted this on the pre forums but was hoping that one of the locals might know a quick solution.

The thing definitely doesn't seem like a toy for the average american idiot smartphone owner.I know that some of the stuff that I'm playing with is still in beta or not for mass consumption. I usually like to tinker with stuff until I either break it or make it better than it's supposed to be.

The everyday things are about as easy as it can get. The app catalog is a one touch install. Email/calendar/contact sync is just a couple of clicks.

It's really an easy phone to use and the entire reason I went with it was the cost of the plan. The wife and I are paying $118 a month and that includes unlimited data and texting. My wife has even figured out a bunch of tricks on her own, which is saying something since she can't get the PS3 to play a Bluray to save her life.

My friends with iPhone are paying much more and constantly bitch about service. I have found that Sprint isn't as good as my Verizon signal but it's been good enough that I haven't had a reason to complain.

jiveturkey
08-27-2009, 06:28 PM
I'll add that I think the iPhone is way cooler and has way more broad based appeal. If it was on a better network and had better plan pricing I'd throw my Palm Pre at the first hobo I saw and pick one up.

Oh, I think all of the cool shit you can do with a Pre sounds very appealing to me. I just don't think it sounds like it's quite at the mass appeal of the iPhone, which doesn't by any means mean that it's an inferior device.

We get killer AT&T service around here, but I was recently in Florida, and my wife's iPhone was worse than useless. I can imagine that if I lived somewhere with poor AT&T service, there's no way I'd get an iPhone. Totally frustrating trying to use maps and such when it wouldn't load up data for shit.

I agree that mass appeal for the Palm Pre isn't there yet. It does some pretty basic smart phone shit and that's about it (unless you hack it and fiddle with it for a while).

In the end nothing will ever be an iPhone killer.

I think I would agree with this summation. I think mostly the deal breaker for me was the iPhone plan...even with a 15% discount for Arkansas educators. My wife and I pay $109 a month for 1600 shared anytime min., unlimited text and data for 2 Pre's. A comparable iPhone plan was $160 with the discount without GPS capabilities. It is definitely a more friendly device, but the Pre is still in "infant" stage...the iPhone is now on its 3rd generation.

Right. Just like the iPod is obsolete now. You underestimate the brainwashing power of really slick marketing and critical mass. New iPhones will continue to come out, and people will continue to buy them regardless of whether they're technically the "best" smartphone or not. It may change in the future at some point, but it will take a serious iPhone-killer contender, not the Pre. Apple is better at achieving "high touch" than anyone currently. They may get knocked off as king of the hill in the future, but I don't see it in the near future.

My Rant has a GPS on it through sprint nav and it's a complete POS. It's pretty fond of adding about a hour to my drive by taking me down bass ackwards country roads. I have to google maps any trip I make before I make it so I can confirm that the nav isn't getting ready to !@# me over.

I was going to buy a GPS but decided to look into getting the Pre instead and hoping it has a good GPS feature on it. If it operates the same as the system on my Rant, then I think I'll just save my money.

It's like the Pre but it doesn't slide.

I don't think I'd like that nearly as much. The functionability of the phone I'm sure is identical, but having a keyboard that you can't send out of sight would be a hindrance IMO.

I ended up actually getting a package deal from Palm.com. I got two Touchstones, an international travel charger and the touchstone backcover for around $130. It was my birthday present to myself.

I picked one up for $35 ;) thanks to the Mrs. Picking up a 50% off any Accessory [Except Bluetooth] Coupon at the march of dimes - they had to call up the store manager but they took it.

On an unrelated note - now any sprint customer that is on an "Everything Data" Plan - can now call to any Mobile device on any carrier for free - and since you had to have one of those plans with the pre.. we get it automagically

Where are all the cool homebrew apps? I don't even know where to look for them. If I try and do the Pre as a tether deal for the internet would you help me out with it if I needed it? I'm pretty computer retarded, and while I'm excited about all the apps coming out I know there are much better ones being created by others.

It's the very closest thing to the Iphone you will ever find. I absolutely love this phone and think it has the potential to surpass the Iphone's usefullness before it's all said and done.

As far as the touchstone goes, it sets on a level area like a desk or countertop and you can just place your phone on it.

Check your battery on the Pre. I was having issues with my phone shutting off on its own. After 3 trips to the Sprint store to have a nerdy tech tell me it was in standby mode they finally figured out that the batteries made in China and Japan don't fit right. This would cause my phone to shut down when I would put it in my pocket or slide the keyboard to fast.

They replaced my battery now my phone is more responsive and no longer shuts down.

How about this new HTC Hero? I watched a review online and it looks fucking slow compared to the Pre. It's Android, and it's Sprint. But I'm not budging. You'd have to pry the Pre outta my cold, dead, hands at this point. I love this phone.

So I bought a Pre (along with a BB Tour, Samsung Reclaim, MiFi Hotspot and Ovation air card) tonight at a charity auction. I was set on getting a HTC Hero or Samsung Moment, but this deal was too good to pass up. I've heard a few less than stellar reviews from those that have had the Pre for a bit....would you guys still recommend it? I'm tempted to keep it, but could just as easily sell on Craigslist and then go get one of the Android phones.

Anybody with a BB Tour, I'd love to hear your thoughts as well. My wife is considering using it as her phone.

I loved the Pre - I really did - it was alot of fun and has much potential, but the hardware feels cheap and plasticky. Mabye the Pre 3 or something will be more solid - even the pixi, the Hero, Moment and Tour all feel much more solid.

My wife was waning the pixi, but I picked her up a tour to hold her over til that came out, now she is not givng up the tour - she is in love with it - and she talked alot of trash on blackberrys. The tour even tempted me away from the pre.

the Moments HUGE screen and soild feel sold me on it - Android 2.0 will come out for it and then I will have the google GPS nav. - the Moment has a faster processor than the HERO and has the full keyboard. I am sold!

I would be happy to answer any questions about any of those phones if you want.

The GPS is buggy and the Battery life indicator is WAY off- it drops so fast down to 15% then it stays there for HOURS

You cant take a picture after batter life is below 15%

The other day it would not hang up on a call -i tried lots of different ways but the call would not hang up... I had to take the battery out.

A new question:

If I may ask, how do you folks pay your bill? Call it in? At Sprint Store? I was looking to set up my on line account. Odd looking setup.

Previously, I set my account w/at&t and was able to access the information and pay at my leisure from a draft. Not an automatic draft, but close. Anyway, as I was setting up my account I got to the online payment area and I thought I was setting this account up the same way.
As I got close it asked for the routing number for my bank. I'm extremely hesitant to allow Sprint this kind of access due to them being so notoriously shitty in their CS actions. I worry constantly they will double bill or due some other nefarious stuff. Only because my dealings with their CSR's years ago were so awful.

I pay from their website every month. No charge. As far as the CS goes, it's leaps and bounds ahead of where it was at 5 years ago when I first signed up with them. They haven't told me no to anything in 3 years, and they haven't overcharged in about the same time frame. They've done a good job at cleaning a lot of that bullshit up.

Anybody experienced any technical issues since the 1.3.5 update? On friday evening, my screen just blanked out. Stayed that way for 45 minutes. Then, the bootup screen cam on ("Palm"). And it stayed that way for 50 minutes.

I was cruising along and found a Sprint store as I hadn't fiddled with the battery previously. Sprint guy popped battery in and out, and all was well for the night. But in the AM I went to unlock the phone and when I hit directly on the unlock numbers, other numbers would pop up. Had to reboot and all was well.

It's kinda pissing me off.

I only bought the screen protector version, not the wrap around. It was suprisingly easy to install and even make adjustments. But once the film has dried and on there, it's on there.

I'm 100% satisfied with the end result. It's easily the best screen protector I've ever used. Scratches that get put in it literally disappear as though they never existed.

She really likes the Samsung Moment which is on the Android platform. She's got a Palm Centro and she's available for an upgrade. She's going to wait a little bit for the price to go down...but she seemed to like it.

I on the other hand am not available for an upgrade until 05/11. So the Palm Pre has some time to start impressing me some more before I trade it in for something else.

My wife and I both have the Moment, and we're big fans. They just did an update to the software to improve GPS and battery. I'm patiently waiting for Android 2.1, which is supposed to be available first half of 2010.

If anyone with Sprint doesn't wish to be anymore, you can get out of your contract for the next 4 days. Regulatory fees went up this month which is an exclusive out to your contract. People are getting $20 a month off of service, new phones, all sorts of shit. There's a thread dedicated to it on slickdeals.net. But you literally have 4 days to move on this if you want to try and work it.

I was with Verizon for probably 8 years and I was paying a shit ton for their service.

With my corporate discount of 27% I pay a total of 130 a month for 1500 minutes shared between 2 phones, insurance on said phones, night minutes starting at 6pm, and unlimited texts and internet. Verizon wanted about 225 for the exact same thing.

When I found out I could get out of my brand new contract, I shopped around. NOBODY even comes close to Sprints prices. Now, if you don't need the internet on your phone, you can do better. But even then, you're paying about 20 less than I'm paying right now and get no internet at all. Just unlimited calling and texting. There is simply not a better bargain outside of Boost, or the other prepaid phones unlimited plans. Since I can't take my Pre to one of those carriers, I'm still not going anywhere.

I cannot see myself ever not owning a WebOS phone right now. To think of all that I would lose to switch to something else at this point.

Considering that Apple is selling at 200.38, and PALM is selling at 9.99 right now - on the strength of WebOS, Palm is way undersold. I'm going to start loading up. This OS has legs.

I own a Pre and love it... BUT I have serious concerns that Android will end up being the better platform in the long run... mostly just due to Google's massive resources...

I personally think WebOS has a long future regardless of what Google does. It's a very slick operating system that can be easily ported to any number of web enabled devices. Fridges. Wall mounts. You name it. This OS wasn't developed strictly for phones.

I can understand the complaints about speed. I've heard the Pre Plus addresses this. I'm looking at selling this and making the jump for it. I never have problems with the reboot though. Sounds like you've got an application issue.

Wow. A pre and a pixi! How do you use the Pixi? I don't quite understand why you'd have both... Not that I'm being critical. I think it's great. I'm just curious what you know that I dont... :)

Well, a few points on that:

1st I prefer the Pixi's form factor over the Pre. The pixi's keyboard is WAY better. Also, it runs better than the Pre- at this point. The Pre has a lot of untapped resources that will improve it's performance as Palm updates the software & takes better advantage of the graphics processing and what not. The pixi doesn't have the same guts & is actually clocked out at 600, while the Pre is at 500 - even though it can eventually be optimized to do a lot more and should get better in the future. These are the pains of being an early adopter... but WebOS is still topdog in my book.

I would caution you on jumping ship to get the Pre + just because it's shown some improved performance because of the gain in RAM... like I said before Palm hasn't even fully realized fine tuning what the Pre has under the hood. My rationale is this:

You're going to jump to Verizon for basically the Pre 2.0 & end up paying quite a bit more a month & lock yourself into a 2 year agreement with Verizon at that higher monthly service cost. I'm assuming that if you've got a Pre with more than 1 line on Sprint then you're a Premier customer? If that's the case, then your line, which I'm guessing is designated as the primary line is eligible for the full upgrade discount every 12 months vs the usual 2 years.

There is another Palm device coming out. At this point only known as the C40. Most likely on Sprint & and probably in June / July. Essentially 12 months after the Pre came out. Which would mean it will most likely be a new flagship phone for WebOS & see a considerable upgrade in build quality and hardware. Palm definitely upped their game in terms of build quality with the Pixi & addressed some build quality issues with the Pre + compared to their initial introduction of the Pre last summer.

So, this would mean you'd probably be eligible for the subsidized cost of Palm's new top dog without paying more a month for service.

Sprint was the one that backed Palm when other's didn't - even in the past with the Centro. While no other carrier was interested in the Centro, Sprint stuck with them & sold over 1 or 2 million units before any other carrier started clamoring for the Centro. Eventually every US carrier- except maybe T-mobile, I think, ended up with their own version of the Centro, and it sold like hotcakes for every carrier. Not bad for a phone that was dismissed at first by everyone but Sprint & featured an OS that hadn't been updated really since the early 2000's.
My point being is that Sprint has been in Palm's corner & will most likely be getting whatever is the next greatest thing coming out from Palm & I don't mean simply just a Pre redux 2.0. It's been a wise move for Palm to initially release on Sprint before debuting on the larger carriers so they can improve things and fix some of the bugs, even though that means Sprint customers might have to suffer thru some growing pains. But, IMO you have no business being an early adopter if you expect things to be perfect from day 1, and I'd rather have enjoyed WebOs since last summer then not & have to wait 6+ months just to get my first chance to play with it!!

Anyway, sorry for the long post. I'm a phone junkie so I keep up on this crap way more than I should, but I'm more than happy to give my 2 cents or help out when I can.

FYI, there is a reboot program that will let you designate time for each day of the week- called Preset Reset. While I didn't make the program, I'm the one that suggested it a while back and came up with the name...

Good tips. I've been a fan of Palm since the Treo 600 was first announced. I was an early adopter of that. I'm pretty sure that I'll always own at least a Treo 700. It's a great unit for taking on backpacking trips - rugged as hell and plays music. Just what I need.

I'm glad to learn about the updates coming to the Pre internals in due time. I am a marketing director working my way towards hopefully being VP of Marketing, and ultimately publisher, so I don't have a lot of free time right now to keep up on the news and trends surrounding the phone. Everything right now is focused on keeping my guys selling and our company moving forward in this strange environment.

I love WebOS though. Absolutely love it. I can't believe how little attention this phone gets paid right now in the press.

Ok... I can't make any sense of this, so I'm hoping someone here with more technical knowledge can help out.

On a whim, I googled the terms "Palm Pre" and "Wireless File Transfer."

I found the following tweet from a Doctor who loves Palm and WebOS:

"Really loving WinSCP and OpenSSH for easy wireless file transfer between the Palm Pre and the PC! "

"install openssh from preware since it is automatic apart from the openssh-keygen to generate the public/private keys"

"the key generation instructions are in the OpenSSH wiki in webosinternals"

"I generated the keys from within the Palm Pre using Terminal

"there are two openssh articles in Webosinternals, this is the correct one: http://is.gd/8Tuk4 "

"just download openssh from preware, then follow the article instructions to generate the keys. install winscp and the rest is easy "

I must have this feature.

I've got Preware, and I downloaded OpenSSH to my unit. I've also downloaded Terminal. But I can't for the life of me figure out how to do the key gen. I have WinSCP - I use it for work. To be able to wirelessly transfer files using WinSCP would be killer.

FYI, since I know there are a number of nightowls around here, if the update is supposed to drop tomorrow you can expect it to be available maybe a half hour to hour after midnight if the last few previous updates hold true for 1.4.

I'm excited to see what the changes are for 1.4. Having used the Pixi and the Pre, I forgot how much faster my battery life went down on the Pre, but really nothing too big of a complaint. My only on is the keyboard. Before having used the Pixi I didn't even really have a problem with the Pre's keyboard. Sometimes ignorance is bliss because I love the Pixi's keyboard & I pray the C40 will be a bump in hardware quality and specs over the Pre & feature the Pixi's keyboard.

Right now the speculation is leaning 2 ways about what the C40 will be.

1 is that it will be a horizontal slider that is slimmer than the Pre with a larger screen.

The other is that it will fall more in line with the Treo Pro body style. The Pixi being more styled after the Centro. Essentially it would be the Pixi's form factor (which has quite a bit of "wasted" space) and they could make the width & height larger than the Pixi without it getting thicker. Bump up the hardware inside and really take full advantage of the screen size by pushing it as close as possible to the edges. If you look at it now- it clearly could have benefited by repositioning the keyboard and taking more advantage to increase the screen size, but didn't because it was intended to be more of an entry level phone.

Yeah. I'm loving that. I've been a little upset about having to wait so long for this but early indications are they did it right, so I'm good with the time it took.

Did you purchase the insurance? Sprint/Palm has been very good about replacing phones that I've had glitches with.

Yeah, I have the insurance. But I also know that if I call in and they have to replace my phone....they're going to send me a refurbished one. Fuck that....I paid money for this phone and I pay money for the insurance. If this thing breaks....I want a new phone...not a refurbished one.

I had to replace my phone due to a problem with the Touchstone, and I got a brand new phone. Though I have had refurbished phones in the past. I've actually had good luck with refurbished equipment.

Besides, I'd rather have a refurbished phone that works than a new phone that is jacked up.

God I love you Sprint.

I call in to the Tech Support line a couple of days ago about my camera problem. They said that it's a hardware problem so I need to go to a Sprint Repair store and have them look at it. I go in yesterday to my local repair store and they said that they need to flash the phone and it would take about an hour and a half to do. I'm fine with that.....and I come back to get my phone an hour and a half later. The sales rep tells me that they fixed the camera but they couldn't fix my volume problem, so they're ordering me a new phone and it will be here in 2-3 days. Fine right? Wrong.

The technician never touched my phone because the camera doesn't work and they never flashed the phone because all of my stuff is still on it. And the new phone I'm getting.....is refurbished phone.

Fuck you Sprint. If it wasn't for your cheap plans.....I'd drop your ass like a bad habit.

Okay, I need help. Had to reformat my computer and wiped out everything. Which was great actually. Until I tried to download preware and all that. WebOSquickinstall.jar isn't recognized by my computer.

I've attached the screenshot. What do I need to do?

Okay apparently I can't attach screen shots now or the response is so sllloooooow. The error message says "Windows needs to know what program created it. You can have Windows look it up automatically or choose from a list.

Any takers?

You need to go to www.java.com and make sure you have the most recent java installed first.

Then when it is installed, select javaw.exe from the program files / java directory

Absolutely. If it wasn't for my 27% discount on the cheapest plan available for what I want, Sprint would be done. I too have a new refurb and this new update is causing my phone to glitch like a motherfucker. And when it just shuts down, I love that it takes 5 minutes to reboot.

As the Sprint drama continues....

So I go in yesterday to pick up my refurbished phone that they ordered me last Thursday. I get there and she's switching everything out and she gets the phone to the point where I need to login to my Palm Profile so that my contacts get put back on the phone.......annnnnnnnnnd the keyboard is broken and doesn't work. Are you fucking kidding me? Now I have to wait another 3 days for a different phone!

She recommended calling into Sprint and threatening to cancel unless they give me a different phone.

Also...explain how this shit fucking works? My contract is up in July of this year....but I'm not available for an upgrade until November 2011.

Sprint doesn't give two shits about their current customers. They're worried about their new customers.

I'm seriously contemplating just adding a line and then transfering my number after 30 days. It would only cost me $50 to get out of my current contract right now anyways.

I still have to call in and speak to a supervisor about this today....so we'll see where this gets me.

SLAG/TJ:

One other issue that I've spent an entire evening reading Palmprecentral about.

I'm trying to load some patches and WebOSQI starts fine. In order to load patches you have use tools>tweaks and then it asks this question:

"Tweaking requires both GNU patch and lsdiff installed to function. One or both of these is missing. WOuld you like to D/L them now"?

Which I answer "Yes". These seem to D/L but then the patches menu disappears. When I click on tools>tweaks it asks the same question again.

I'm into about 22 pages on the tweaks install thread w/no answer.

Any suggestions?

Couple of things,

When was the last time your phone visted the Doctor - WebOS Doctor
Use the Doctor on your phone and start fresh. the Pre will download all app store apps and give all your contacts back.

next...
Have you tried to install them via preware? I only ever used WebOSQI to load preware (sometimes -most of the time I still root the pre and do it in the linux console -but I'm an linux admin soooo.....)

Are you getting the errors in preware if so

I have no problems with the phone and tech at all. It's just that Palm is a sinking ship into bankruptcy. I didn't expect the Pre to turn around the company, and it clearly hasn't. Not enough people are buying them and there's just too much competition. Palm is just about finished.
