Holy crap.

48-year old Ray Mercer knocked out Tim Sylvia in 10 seconds in Birmingham, AL, thus a washed up former boxing champion in fact knocked out a two-time UFC champion in an MMA rules match. Sylvia threw a kick and Mercer countered with a right hand that knocked Sylvia out.

Damn.

That's exactly why Dana doesn't let his guys fight boxers (like Anderson Silva vs Roy Jones). If they win, they beat a washed-up boxer. If they lose, it's an embarassment to UFC.

Most decent club fighters would destroy MMA guys.

Most MMA guys don't have sufficient technique to beat someone who actually has honed his craft.

In his prime, Ray Mercer hit like a bus. Sounds like he still has some power. I guess the MMA guy will probably agree after he gets out of the hospital.

Mercer also lost to a streetfighter with about 6 months of MMA training in Kimbo Slice.

Huge props to a 48 year old Mercer for getting out there and beating a Sylvia. I just think at his age he isn't going to have great takedown/submission defense that you need to consistently beat top guys.

Tim Sylvia never had a good chin. Ray Mercer always had a great right hand. I truly believe that anyfighter of relative weight can knock someone out with MMA gloves.

For sure...that was Mercer's only real chance and he capitalized.

You can't begrudge him the win but, take it with a grain of salt. The list of guys who have put Sylvia on queer street is pretty long.

I guess I'm just looking at it differently....Mercer has no ground game, no wrestling, no kicks. He had one weapon and it worked...Sylvia POTENTIALLY could have beat him in many different ways. Props to Mercer though for sure.

at least as you have decent defense to not be taken to the ground a boxer can win alot of fights in devastating fasion.

I think we will see this happen fairly soon. They will just learn to not let an opponent take them down and force the other guy to fight and uh oh, game over.

Then again, you have to be really really good to not let some of them fighters take ya down. lol

The absolute hate people have for Kimbo is funny to me considering how shitty UFC's heavyweight division is.

There are several rules that tip UFC fights in the strikers favor. Fans want to see striking, so they do standups when guys are inactive on the ground, break up clinches that might eventually lead to takedowns, and installed 5 minute rounds which also cause standups. If the guys were wearing shirts/kimono's takedowns are easier, add in the greasing scandals and you can imagine how hard it would be to do a takedown on a greased fighter. First thing a boxer usually needs to do is change their stance a little though, a traditional boxing stance leaves you pretty vulnerable to leg kicks.

Good takedown defense + ability to get to your feet when taken down + world class striking = championship formula for the street or cage.

It'll be interesting to see how he does.
