I know alot of you love talking about torture so this should be good.

On Friday, there may be a major development in the torture wars: The CIA is set to release portions of a 2004 report that reportedly found no proof that torture foiled any terror plots, which would dramatically undercut Dick Cheney’s claims that torture worked.

Staffers on the Hill call this report the “Holy Grail” because it contains a whole chapter on the “effectiveness” — or lack thereof — of torture.

The report has already been released (http://www.aclu.org/torturefoia/released/052708/052708_Special_Review.pdf) in connection with an ACLU lawsuit, but much of it has been redacted — including the “effectiveness” chapter. That chapter is reported to say there’s no proof that torture foiled any plots, but the details are unknown.

CIA officials have already announced they will release more of the report this coming Friday, in response to the Obama administration’s request to do so. But now today’s Washington Post reports (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/16/AR2009061603516.html?hpid=topnews) that CIA officials are pushing to keep big chunks of the report classified.

So selective transparency is ok as long as its not Cheney. Got'cha. :thumb:

Actually I usually stay away from those discussions.

But this is news so I thought I would share.

Yes, and we all know what a huge part of Cheney's platform transparency was when he was campaigning as Vice President. I mean he talked on and on about how he would be so transparent when he was Vice President, and he said the days of government secrecy were over. So for him to selectively release information was unforgiveable.
In fairness to Obama, he never said anything about transparency and so we shouldn't really poke fun when he selectively chooses which issues to be transparent about.

Yes, Obama is sprinkling some more crumbs for those pigeons.

I guess I don't follow.

Dick Cheney is getting exactly what he is asking for so I guess I don't see the problem. People should be happy.

Really, this specific report? Can you prove that?

They are going to release the outcomes or the effectiveness of the interrogations.

So no, you can’t prove this is the specific document(s) Cheney requested release of.
That’s OK Dirk, neither can I. I looked around and found the response that they couldn’t be release due to pending litigation but nothing that named the documents specifically.
Somehow I’m doubting this is what he was after though.

I've no doubt that they will release a single report that's friendly to their talking point. Besides, they keep bringing up torture whenever they need a distraction.

They ought to release all information related to the, what, 3 people who were waterboarded, instead of cherry-picking what they think will help politically.

I am not sure on the specific document but I would assume that this report by the way people describe that have seen it lays it all out and says what worked, what didn't, what terrorist activities were stopped and what kind of false information they have received.

Honestly I don't know what else anyone would need.
