I know many of you are already planning your 2010 summer trip to our wonderful city. I think we need a repository of all things St. Joseph from the locals. From hotels to restaurants to things to do or see, let's gather it all here and then for the next 5 years you'll all have some place to look before you plan your travels.

Doesn't have to be St. Joe either, can be the near vicinity. Of course we can't list everything to do in Elwood, otherwise this will just get a bit out of control.

So with that said, you guys throw out your thoughts/ suggestions, and I'll try and update the initial post and link to your reviews of certain restaurants, find links to the places you mention and try and post everything here in some kind of comprehenisble fashion.

I would consider vacationing in St. Joseph if I knew the following were available:

1. A nice historic area with home tours or guided walking tours.
2. At least three world-class restaurants, with entrees under $20. Or alternatively, a Chili's.
3. An area of great scenic beauty, preferably with a large waterfall, but one that's not really noisy, just tall.
4. Some sort of large archaeological vestige of a lost civilization. It could be a pyramid or it could be something else like a Mahal or a Wat.
5. A bear viewing area, preferably grizzly or polar.
6. A large wargaming convention, but one in which less than 80 percent of attendees aren't kind of weird.
7. At least one cool gimmick hotel, like one made out of ice, or underwater, or in a big treehouse.
8. A high point that offers stunning vistas of the surrounding area. It could be a natural high point like a mountaintop, or it could be a manmade high point like a Space Needle or Washington Monument.
9. A museum that contains one or more of the following: suits of armor, tanks, a display on tribal migration patterns, or a professional football history wing.
10. A festival that nominally celebrates something like Spring or Tuesday, but which informally is a raucous display of female exhibitionism.

Please advise.

St. Joe is OK, nothing to write home about. I think it was at the bottom of the list of places to live in America not too long ago... it is in Misery, so that's about right. I've only gone there lately when working at the farm and needing parts for farm equipment. There's a nice Taco Bell by the parts store, though.

1. Actually, there is a historic homes tour. There's a lot of old money in St. Joe with some grand old houses and architecture.

http://www.stjomo.com/historic_homes.aspx

2. World class? I'm not so sure, but there are some fantastic restaurants specific to St. Joe. Many people traveling in to see family enjoy coming back to eat at these establishments, like Barbosa's, the Hoof and Horn, Galvin's and a handful of other great places to eat.

3. There used to be a waterfall at Krug Park, but it's all but dried up. Still a beautiful park with a pond and lots of ducks and geese. King Hill lookout and Wyeth Park are overlooks above the city and suounding area and provide great scenic views. Bluff Woods conservation area is a great place to visit in the fall, but might not provide much for viewing in the summer month of August.

4. Would Indian artifacts count? There's a nice collection at the recently built Remington Nature Center. The Native Americans are a lost civilization, simply because the English settlers simply murdered most of them upon settling in North America.

5. There are no longer bears in Northwest Missouri, unfortunately. There's a stuffed bear at the Nature Center though

6. I think there is some sort of society established in town that focuses on video gaming. I'm not that familiar with it. Slightly related, there are various civil war reenactments that take place throughout the area spread throughout the year.

7. umm, I guess the closest would be the Ramada Inn with a newly built indoor water park. However, I've heard it isn't the quitest place to settle in for the night.

8. see the King Hill lookout and Wyeth Park viewing areas referenced above.

9. There are a lot of great museums in the area. Not sure anything you request specifically, however we have the Glore Psychiatric Museum (old mental hospital turned museum), Remington Nature Center (displays on most of the native animals and native american, civil war and pony express memorabilia), Patee House Museum (an old motel turned museum, also the place the Pony Express was operated out of, lots of Jesse James and Pony Express history), the Pony Express Museum (old pony express stables with memorabilia from that period), Miliary Heritage Museum, and a couple other museums I'm not mentioning.

10. Mardi Gras parade

ok, #7. The Shakespeare Chateau may qualify as well, it's a B&B with stained glass and wood carvings depicting scenes from Shakepeare

and #9. the Glore is pretty amazing... one of the most unique museums in the US

Ok I'll start with the first restaurant review:

Barbosa's Castillo

Wonderful Mexican food, just not the typical Tex-Mex you might expect. Everything is cooked using flour tortillas, their tacos are delicious, light, crips deep-fried using flour tortillas. My favorite dish would be the Posk Burrito, rice, refried beans and their signature Pork Chili in a flour torilla smothered with Nacho Cheese sauce. The Chicken nachos are also killer, tortilla chips are also flour.

I think we would have a very solid list established rather quickly, if everyone from the area or familiar with the area, would take the time to list their favorite thing in town to do, their favorite place in town to eat, and maybe their favorite place to stay or where they would stay (for the locals) if they lived somewhere else and were in town visiting.

Then we'll have a solid list to look at, and can start plugging in some of the holes.

Favorite places to eat...
Barbosa's (already listed), D&G(closed), Bucket Shop(closed) and Galvins

To stay...
Holiday Inn downtown, Ramada Inn, Shakespear Chateau B&B

To do...
That is hard to say... I would recommend the Glore, Krug Park and check out some of the architecture around town.. i.e. Twin Spires etc
(I would also go to Cool Crest if it is still open just for childhood memories)

Has it been verified that fans will have access to watch practices and such?

yes, that's the point. County and City have both given funds to the facility in anticipation of tourism dollars. I'm not sure practices inside the "indoor practice bubble" will be open simply because there may not be enough room, but I've heard it said that the Chiefs plan to practice out in the open as much as feasibly possible.

St. Joseph is a fine place if you stay on the East side, and north shoppes area. Avoid South Side, downtown, and the old north end and you will be in good shape.

-The Tap Room (Classy bar with no drama, thugs, trash. HD TV's with deck)
-Cheddars (Big portions, $2.50 margarita's, cheap/good food approx $6.99)
-Fosters Martini Bar (martini's for the chicks)

Other restaraunts:
(North Shoppes)

-Buffalo Wild Wings
-54 Street
-Chili's
-Bob Evans
-IHOP
-Olive Garden

(East Side)

-Red Lobster
-Denny's
-Country Kitchen
-Applebee's
-Le Peep (Awesome breakfast)
-Cracker Barrel

Barbeque:

-Bandana's (Best BBQ in town imo)
-Whiskey Creek
-Famous Dave's
-Rib Crib

Active Bars:
(East Side)

-Uncle D's
-The Rear View
-The Tap Room
-Wiley's (yuck!, frat hangout, underage drinking, drama)

(West Side)

-Norty's (New!)
-HI-HO (Classic, always crowded, good times)
-Kelley's (New!)
-Hammerjacks (Supposed to be a rock bar)
-Rendezvous (Best place for live rock/metal)
-Magoon's (Best for live Jazz/experimental)

the Hoof and Horn is reopened.

My good friends opened Coordinier's for awhile after the Coordiniers retired, and while they weren't out there catching the fish, the Coordiniers were still stocking the freezers and they were serving fresh catch.

They got out of it, but it's once again re-opened and I believe the Coordinier family is still catching fish for the manager to prepare for customers.

that's pretty good. I was almost considering listing all chain restaurants at the bottom of the restaurants list, maybe just alphabetically.

We also need to figure out how to list and give reviews of the local bars and pubs. Maybe I can just list them and then link to reviews kinda like I've started to do with the restaurants here...

snakebite is our retarded version of a club, there are ususally a bunch of college chicks trendy music etc, one thing that is cool though is the service is usually pretty nice. it is downtown. If you want to get into a fight get drunk and go to legends (a bowling alley bar) fights happen everytime I go out there. Uncle D's is a nice bar, dunno how the food is anymore, it is a Missouri Western themed bar.

Wiley's is an old pizza hut turned into a Frat house bar. I haven't been there in years, but oh the irony having Frat guys with popped collars in an old pizza hut. Biggin's is an old mazzio's pizza place turned into a bar, pretty white trash, but good boozing friends there. Most the places in st joseph you can find 3rd shift people drinking at all parts of the day and if you are drinking then the locals are ususally friendly as hell.

the snakebite owner is looking to build a party deck up on the roof, which would be pretty cool. What could beat getting drunk and leaning over the edge watching the cars passing by?

Just South of there now at the corner of 6th & Edmond they are renovating an old Music Store and it is going to be a roof-top restaurant. I see some potential with that as well, although the quality of food probably makes or breaks it like anything else.

Ok, here goes my reviews of the local bars. I don't get out a ton anymore, but I'd guess I've been to about 80% of the bars in town by now. So with that said...

I'll start with the bars in the vicinity of MoWest's campus...

Rear View Bar & Grill: Fairly close to campus, nice little place to enjoy a couple cold ones. Typical bar with typical grill food (wings, ribs, etc). Golden Tee and Silver Strike, although I dont think they are hooked up online.

Hammerhead's: Small bar with a couple pool tables, rock on the jukebox but sometimes the crowd can get a bit shady.

Legend's Bar & Grill: Located at the Belt Bowl, several large screen TVs and a hanful of pool tables. Party deck open during the summer, typically frequented by the college crowd with music catered to the younger crowd.

Tuck's: Also located at the Belt Bowl complex, your typical biker bar. Classic rock on the jukebox with a handful of pool tables.

Volley's: Another bar located at the Belt Bowl complex, a number of volleyball courts with the bar between the courts. Summer leagues dominate the courts, but sometimes the scenery can be nice.

The Tap Room: Also in reasonable distance from campus, however I have not been there since it opened as the Tap Room, but everything I've heard sounds like its a nice place to grab a beer.

Uncle D's Nice little sports bar with several TVs and games on all the time.

Wiley's: As many have already mentioned, your typical frat bar. Usually over-crowded with drunk girls looking for young drunk guys to buy them drinks and pick them up.

Muny Inn: I haven't been there in awhile, but a nice little place to grab a cold one. They used to have a couple nights a week that were $5 all you can drink from the Natty Light kegs, my kind of place.

And then some bars in the downtown area...

Cafe Acoustic: Not really downtown downtown, but as you are getting downtown it is right there. They basically have a stage where people can come in and get up on stage and jam, and then they also sell beer and wine and stuff.

Kelly's Pub: I liked this place the time I went, a little Irish pub and as demon mentioned was very clean.

Hi-Ho: I'm usually in here getting an Irish Car bomb when I'm shooting some pool next door. Nice little pub with some nice selections on tab, TVs and decent jams on the juke box.

Big Shots: Another biker bar with a few pool tables, foosball and shuffle board table.

Norty's: Norty's used to be by Central High before it burned down, then they bought another bar, renovated it and moved their bar in. It's actually a really nice place with some TVs, shuffleboard, pool tables and beer pong table.

Shaft Nightclub Umm, gay bar with drag shows and stuff.

Blondie's: If you want to see some nasty hoes that take their tops off and shake their boobs in your face for a buck, this is your place.

our sports bars suck ass in st joseph. hell it took our "sports" bars so damn long to get HD. Has anyone noticed most the HD in bars are already looking fuzzy from years of wear on the tv's? I will say this about Uncle D's. We rented the back part for my moms 50th birthday party and they were really cool and the beer was reasonable (kegs) I am sure like everything else it went to shit after a couple years and the prices went through the roof because of barak

Legends, The Muny, The Tap Room and Wiley's all suck. The Tap Room is alright, but still sucks. DO NOT go to Blondie's unless you like cigarette burns and c-section scars. Emerald's is a better option if you wanna go to a tittie bar, but it still sucks majorly.

If you want a nice clean bar to consume a few drinks and shoot some pool..go to Kelly's, Norty's, or The Hi-Ho. All three are close to one another, and Kelly's is the only one that truly attracts a college crowd, but it's still pretty dead in the summer. Norty's and The Hi-Ho usually have a much more distinguished crowd, but they're both good options.

The Muny was good when T Dale owned it, and then it was a Guerdado or Barbosa that had it ... did he sell it?I have no clue who owns it now, but it's still a dive that NOBODY goes too. I mean, they even have trouble attracting good crowds with weeknight college specials. Not to say I haven't had a good time in there a couple of times, but it definitely isn't worth checking out in the summer. At all.

Just found the Chiefs Planet site and excited about training camp in St. Joseph. There are a lot of good places to eat and drink in town. For those who weren't big on Legends, I don't know. The food is WAY underrated. You get huge portions and it's really good food. And, there are A LOT of flat screen, high def big screen TVs. The beer is also pretty cheap. They are always having specials.

Also, they've opened up an upscale pool hall on-site that is FANTASTIC. It's called Sharky's and has more than a dozen tables with plenty of flat screen tvs.

At night, there's still a decent crowd, but not like when it was packed a couple years ago. I think the downtown bars are taking some of that. But, if you're looking for a drink or food between practices on the two-a-days, its location and the food, pool and tvs make it the place to go.

I am a 21 year old from Saint Joseph who goes to school at mizzou. That being said when I come back I go to Norty's (New sky deck) and Tap Room (Only no smoking bar I know of in Saint Joe, more upscale crowd than downtown). Norty's is a better environment for getting hammered but Tap room has better food. Other than that you have to go to Beaudreax or however it is spelled.

i think it's kinda funny all the grumblings about moving camp down here. Especially when this thread starts filling up and people realize there is some stuff to do in the area. What the hell exactly was there to do in River Falls, besides frequent the handful of bars or pizza places downtown?

Lol! Where to start? Mall of America was only 30-40 minutes away, tubing the Apple River is a BLAST, wineries and boat cruises in Stillwater, boardwalk and beach in dowtown Hudson as well as an amazing old fashioned cigar lounge, excellent golf courses, on top of some truly unique and amazing restaurants like San Pedro Cafe, Pier 500, Twisted Grill, etc...

There was a ton to do within 30-40 minutes of River Falls....

Ok here's the deal with St. Joseph. You go to a bar called Wiley's (it is an old pizza hut) You slip the bar tender a 20 dollar bill and you whisper in his right ear that you want the PostRockPablo. They wisk you away to the deck and give you an mp3 player filled with Modest Mouse tunes. From there you will order 10 bud lights and you will start living the dream.

I didn't feel like making a thread out of this, but I wanted everyone's prediction..who do you all think will be the player that is somewhat of a longshot to make the roster, but is a player that all the fans really hope makes the team? It's usually a wide receiver or runningback. Seems like every year there's always "that guy" that the fans kind of rally behind and hope he makes the team. Just curious if anyone has any predictions who that player could be. Even though it's premature I guess. If anyone has any hunches based on players you've seen in college or for another NFL team. Or someone already on the team.
