At the time of writing, I have put over fifty hours into the game, and my journal menu still lists more than forty unfinished jobs. These are just the tasks I've found, and I doubt I've scratched the surface as I am willing to bet there are many finely layered quests that I still have not stumbled across.

I never played Oblivion and if there was a thread about it I didn't see it.

And I'm pretty sure that he knows how to use Mods. I've seen pics.

Well I was joking about the lil bitch..
My point is, there is no real skill involved in using mods with Elders Scroll games.
I didn't say Gif doesn't know how to download a mod and copy it to the data folder.. Or download the mod installer and open the path to your downloaded mod file and select "run".
I'm quite confident that you could do this on your own -- and maybe even learn something during the process.

I should have downloaded the fucking thing, but I'm old school and want to have the disc. Now, even though I've got it in the computer, I can't just install the game - I have to wait for shit to download from Steam anyway. As overloaded as the server is, it looks like I won't be able to play for a couple of hours.

Fuck Steam. I hate it with every fiber of my being. Buying the goddamn game and installing it really should be enough. :#

The problem is I waited to buy the game at Game Stop. Now I'm home, and it's downloading some massive update and the servers are clogged. I also have DSL (only real option where I live) which isn't helping. Downloading a 5.7g update, and I'm not even at 10% yet.

I should probably just go to bed and get an early start tomorrow.

damnit....I broke the "before the storm" quest. I ran into Gerdun while she was walking to her house and talked to her there, and for some reason it skipped past the quest dialoge. Was my first run, so I went past it all and played for a few a couple hours without realizing it, so I reloaded back to before that and talked to her at the mill and got it all. I can't get the console to tell me the questid to try to complete it that way, so I guess I either have to wait for someone somewhere to find it, re-play the 2 hours of stuff I did, or...option three, take a nap now and get ready for The old Republic weekend test tonight.

I am going with option 3 I think.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Review

A monumental achievement from top to bottom , The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim stands as one of the greatest interactive experiences ever created.

Among the myriad pleasures to be found in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – and there are many – the one that stands out the most came about 15 hours in. Crossing vast tundra covered in hardy-looking, rust-colored plants that convey the hostility of the climate, I noticed movement on a side of the plain. As I walked toward it, it hit me that I was looking at a giant, walking, no, better yet, herding two woolly mammoths. This strange and docile moment kept me transfixed. It also perfectly crystallizes the thrill of Skyrim: being wholly lost in a world that is a product of such careful imagination that, amidst all the dragons, dungeons, and wraiths, the inner logic of this astonishing game can produce a moment of such organic quietude.

It's A Big, Dragon-Filled World Out There

Skyrim, following Fallout 3 and Oblivion, is yet another ambitious title that presents a massive and fully explorable world with only the players’ disposition to guide them through the seemingly endless number of quests and adventures. Those previous titles were strong, evocative games that still had the lingering sense of not fully realizing their ambitions. Skyrim is that realization and is the apotheosis, not only of the open-world format, but of what games can accomplish. It is perhaps the finest experience ever made available in the medium.

The game takes place in Skyrim, the northernmost region of Tamriel, the continent of the Elder Scroll games. You begin the game in captivity by the imperial troops (governed by the emperor located in Cyrodill, the locale of Oblivion) on your way to have your head removed from your body for your crimes. Along for this ride are other criminals and representatives of a rebel force that is attempting to liberate Skyrim from the imperial control. Before the axe comes down, the festivities are interrupted by the appearance of a dragon, creatures that existed only in myth and were considered to have once ruled over humans like gods. Quickly, you must escape both your captors and the beast and, in short order, emerge into the amazing wilds, towns, and cities of Skyrim.

“Amazing” doesn’t do the landscape justice. Skyrim offers the single most impressive gaming landscape I have ever seen, not just in its scope, but in the variety and detail, a truly monumental achievement that allows for sublime absorption of the player in its verisimilitude. Towering mountains, sodden marshland, and arid plains comprise the landscape with such character and drama that you can sense the dry air and caustic environment that seeps with the harsh danger that informs the events of the game. Where the setting of Oblivion conveyed a seat of majesty in the Empire’s center on the verge of devastation, Skyrim evokes the eruption of natural forces that form the tenuous survival of its inhabitants against this menacing backdrop, underscoring the civil war and dragons that threaten to consume it all.

A Schmorgesborg Of Fantasy Delights

Every moment of exploration through Skyrim evokes awe. The most northern reaches of the map, where icy cliffs drop into the Ocean, look like the edge of the gamespace, and then it becomes clear that there are islands you can travel to over the cluster of ice cramping the shoreline, where you find yet more towering mountains, fully explorable with caves, creatures, and tombs. Such moments of discovery are incessant and exhilarating, as tens of hours into the game, there is still a fresh sense of mystery and more than enough reason to continue on through the game’s seemingly endless supply of content and activity.

It’s not just the external landscape of Skyrim that impresses it magnificence on the player. Cities are distinct, each with its own architectural character; one is built into a mountainside, incorporating the cavernous halls of the absent dwarven race, another is a seedy town in the waterlogged lowlands where thieves run rampant and homes on the canal ooze with desperation. The variety extends into the game’s countless dungeons and caves. No one dungeon or cave looks like the others. All, no matter the size, seem to have been the product of care and attention in their design and belie logic to their construction and have a story to tell. Even better, nearly all these spaces are well lit so the strange beauty of forests inside of a mountain can be admired in all of its surreal magnificence.

The effect of the environmental design in Skyrim cannot be understated; the mature grounding of the world at every level of detail exudes confidence and coherence that rewards the player through investigation and attention, not just in leveling up their character or finding superior loot. This is assisted through the sophistication in the writing and design of the quests that make up the core of your time in Skyrim. Acquired at an alarming rate throughout the game, these quests, unlike previous Elder Scroll titles, feel organically linked to this wondrous world and hold the promise of both heightening the sense of mystery and further bringing a canny sense of reality to the fantasy world.

More Quests Than A Quest Fest

Instead of one main quest, Skyrim presents two: in the first, you are dealt the return of the dragons and the revelation that your character is one of the rare dragonborn, possessing the historical lineage of prior emperors, exhibiting many powers of the dragon, such as the power to breathe, or “speak,” in flames and frost. The second is the simmering internal conflict between the kings, or “Jarls,” of the various regions of Skyrim, divided in their loyalties to the empire or independence.

This second storyline is a highly effective addition, as it functions as a counterweight to the high fantasy proceedings of the dragons and casts a murky moral ambiguity over the narrative. You will pick a side and neither one is terribly appealing. This display of human fecklessness as Dragons bring potential annihilation from the heavens serves as an exceptional narrative backdrop to the game, placing the player at the center of highly tenuous circumstances as threatening and overwhelming as the land of Skyrim itself.

The main quests, as compelling as it is, is only a modest portion of the quests to be found in the game. Skyrim doesn’t distinguish between main and side-quests in the log and for good reason; all of the quests are designed with the same precision, care and drama. Characters that populate the world and send you on your adventures are distinct, and the motivation to venture into the dark recesses of Skyrim never feels formulaic or repetitive.

These quests are also significant in their scope and breadth. Nothing feels like busywork and the monetary or treasure rewards are secondary to the sights you are treated to. Of particular note are the quests centered in the guilds or colleges. Unlike previous games where a series of odd tasks move you up the ranks, here, they all intertwine into a larger narrative hours upon hours long.

The Long And Bloody Road

Another section of the quest log marked “miscellaneous” is filled with small opportunities; collection quests, bounties, and general assistance to the public are listed. There’s a small touch among these mini-quests that is deliciously clever, some are coy lures into larger more substantive quests and this elegant tool of revealing them to the player is joltingly effective reminder of just how sophisticated the game’s design is. Even the unrevealing quests are not tiresome, because they are designed to push the player into untraveled regions of the map and all occur in an unexplored, wholly unique place.

The “miscellaneous” quests are also fun to play because the combat in Skyrim is as diverse and satisfying as all its other aspects. The Elder Scrolls games are philosophically predicated on the player having full choice, and the advent of dual wielding weapons, magic, or both, is the most significant articulation of that design prerogative. Weaken an enemy with a fireball, close the distance, and hack away with your sword, fill both hands with a fireball spell to maximize impact and damage, or go with sword and mace in hand for the personal touch. The strategy options open up immeasurable with both arms in use and a quick menu to select favorite items can make a simple combat instance a very diverse and deeply satisfying affair.

It doesn’t hurt that the combat finally has a visceral kick. The animations portray power and timing can make a difference. Finishing moves can be randomly triggered, and after some challenging confrontations, they elicited some strongly worded exclamations of joy. Combat can prove very difficult in instances; enemies follow the format of Fallout 3 and don’t level up at your pace, making some encounters power fantasies of one swing executions and others very challenging, especially in random encounters with dragons, dragon priests, and at the conclusion of quests. Nearly all of these challenges can be overcome with shrewd use of weapons, potions, and magic but expect frequent death and load screens (the difficulty can be adjusted on the fly) and some inelegant resolutions.

May The Stars Shine Upon You

Spikes in difficulty are an understandable by-product of the dynamic nature of the game and your ability to shape your character in it. The character upgrades have been significantly streamlined. Instead of adding numbers to your various stats, each level offers a perk point which has a clear material benefit to a particular skill. While purists may blanch at the thought of limiting stat development, the decision to focus on perks is the right one. Increasing skills by three points is to effect the change that the perks represent, albeit through an opaque mathematical rubric. The new system doesn’t just make the system more accessible, it makes it clear, and the results are immediately evident in the gameplay.

I also found myself obsessing far less over my stats and perks in Skyrim and realized that, even after the 70th hour of play, that typical motivation of improving my character’s numbers to achieve some personal goal was absent. There was no grind; I was just playing the game. This is the ultimate achievement of Skyrim. The game architecture stays in the background and the experience of existing in this phenomenal world remains paramount.

The game’s organic rewards of seeing new areas, finding new items, and evolving narrative continue to hold their allure and tantalize with the thought of what’s to come. In this, Skyrim manages an achievement that’s Wagnerian in its totality (and not just due to the use of Dragons). This is digital Gesamtkunstwerk; the disparate parts of the games seamlessly form an amazing collective that is true immersion, an experience that you relax into and become gloriously overwhelmed. Looking at the single disc, it’s not a game that’s contained in it, rather a world.

One Game To Rule Them All

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is less a product of creativity than an act of creation. The accomplishment on display is without equal, but it’s the sublimation of those efforts into a deeply personal experience that is the lasting effect and elicits the compulsive desire to consume more and more of what it has to offer. Playing it, I could recall getting the first Nintendo system and sitting down with my brother to play Super Mario Brothers. Upon reaching the subterranean level 1-2, the dramatic aesthetic shift awakened us to the giddy thrill of realizing that we had no idea what the game had in store ahead, and our excitement became an uncontained rapturous exaltation. Eighty hours into Skyrim, I’m still feeling like that 11-year-old.

So, I can't believe how unbelievably stupid they made horses.

Anytime I'm dismounted in combat, the horse just has to join in.

It was one thing for the horse to start beating on wolves with it's hooves. I understand that.

But then I'm parked at the top of a hill, where the giants can't get me, firing arrows, and suddenly for no reason the horse decides it needs to LEAVE THE SAFETY OF THE HILL and go attack A GIANT.

Of course the horse died in one hit while I scream out in anguish.

Then later on I see a dragon, so I dismount and run a bit so my horse will be safe.

Here I am fighting this huge bloody dragon AND MY HORSE CHARGES INTO THE FRAY OF BATTLE TO HELP ME.

And of course the dragons constantly circle, so the horse RUNS AHEAD to SOLO THE DRAGON. I'm RUNNING AND SCREAMING and watching this dragon ENGULF my poor horse in great belches of flame and hoping I can distract it before the horse is a steak.

I paid 1,000 gold for you, horse, stop trying to be the hero of the story. You are not dragonborn.

(thank god for resurrect cheats)

I was under the impression that if you saw a dragon you HAD to go kill it.

I've seen 3 and killed 3 so far. One at the watchtower outside whiterun, one way up at the top of the map at the college of magic, and a third in the wilderness out to the far northwest.

What I'm reading is that it's very possible to kill dragons at very low levels. I guess enemy scaling is back. That kind of takes the sense of danger out of the dragon encounters.

Yeah, I picked it up at Target when shopping with my woman, used that $10 on the other stuff we purchased. I told myself I'd sell back on Amazon for like $30 credit so it would end up really only costing $20 to me. I showed the game to my friend and went back and played like 3 hours of BF3 with Prof and Vardar. It looked gorgeous though, and all the leveling trees looked amazing, so I'm pretty excited about it now.

This is honestly one of the best looking games I've ever played. The variety is seriously impressive. Do any of the dungeons repeat at all? Every one I've been to looks different. That's why you backup while attacking

dual wield flame thrower and start backing up until you are out of mana or they are dead.

Then break out the sword and shield.

I'm constantly switching weapons

in stealth mode pretty much all the time with bow out for long range first strike
when they get close enough switch to double flame thrower
when out of mana, sword and shield
switch sword hand to healing when i need it, keep blocking with shield while healing.

my standard right now ... not very high level yet though.

btw ... just a few level points in Magicka seems to make a huge difference in how long it lasts. I think your magicka recovery must be based on % of the total you have. The more you have the faster it recovers.

I'm an imperial so i start with Heavy armor ability and each point of the heavy armor perk increases your armor rating by 20% for heavy armor. I put 2 in there so far. Just wait until i get the extra fire % damage and heavy armor weighs nothing perks

Oblivion is in my top 10-15 games ever, preordered this and still haven't played it. I'll get around to it when I'm bored, providing Torchlight 2 isn't released before then. ;)

just hold on to it for now

You can capture high level souls in it and then use that to do a magical upgrade on an items.

btw keep an eye out for a soul capturing weapon, you'll need it.

Can't you just buy the spell to capture souls? I did.

Oblivion didn't suck at all, if you didn't like that game you wont like Skyrim, but Skyrim is like a cooler version of Oblivion, it's really ****ing good.Halfway through Oblivion got repetitive as hell and you basically stopped leveling up.

Hopefully Skyrim won't have that same problem.

So far Sky rim already has more battle variety than Oblivion ever did ... so that's a good sign.

Looks like when I get to play again I definately need to start working on bows. Only to level 5 before I stopped for OTR beta weekend and to see if I could fix the chick talking to me for The Coming Storm, but up to that point all I had been doing was roasting people with magic, that or stabbing at them with a dagger that made them flee.

Roast em coming in, stab them to make them flee, them run them down and roast em some more.

I had probably the most memorable battle in any video game I've ever played, especially since it was unscripted.

Coming down the shear slopes of High Hrothgar towards Whiterun, having just seen the Greybeards for the first time, out of nowhere the first dragon I've directly encountered since the opening scene rears up over the rocks. Fucking Ice Dragon.

I'm playing it on Master, and I'm completely unprepared to fight this thing. But I'm half down the mountain - way too steep to run back up; certain death to run down. So I sprint and jump along the rocks laterally, trying to heal as I go, but taking tons of damage. I make it a fair distance, but the thing swirls up around beside me. No time to heal. I'm gonna die.

But I'm not the target! Hajvarr Iron-Hand, some bad-ass dude camping out alone on this precarious little outcropping, is shooting arrows at the dragon and he's its target. But then it flies away for awhile and he starts coming after me! Bastard AI, WTF! So he and I fight, but then the damn dragon comes back and hits both of us.

I don't want to kill Hajvarr, because he can soak the dragon's damage while I shoot it. But he and Dragon still go after me too. For 3 days and nights in-game, we play a 3-way game of cat-and-mouse on the cliffs overlooking Whiterun: healing, fighting each other, taking turns going 2-on-1. Took me almost 2 hours, because Dragon refuses to land.

Finally, Hajvarr dies, but Dragon is badly wounded. He swoops down to the plains and I follow. Finally, he lands. Two guards run out and Dragon starts fighting them. I'm far away, but I can see his life getting really low. So I sprint, ignoring my low health, trying to move in for the kill.

Then Dragon inexplicably turns to me, somehow realizing I was coming, and rears up, about to frost-breath me FTW. I pause the game, trying to think of something I can do. No potions left. Healing spells are too slow. Whirlwind Sprint, the shout I'd learned 2 hours ago! I equip, unpause, shout it, and smash him with Molag Bal's mace before he can kill me. I'll see you in hell, Dragon.

Unforgettable. It's too early to say Skyrim has supplanted Morrowind as my favorite game of all time. But it's well on its fucking way.

Last night I was walking along the northern shore toward that city by Azura's shrine, and got attacked by a group of those ice-sprits. Killed most of them, got separated from my partner, low on health, out of everything, the last one corners me with my back to this open pit. On death's door it lunges at me, I leap backwards and go tumbling into the pit. I'm trapped in this cave with no way up, so I press on and discover these ancient ruins of a dwemer city glittering under the ice. It was breathtaking.

exactly what i'm doing :D

choose imperial so i got heavy armor to start and running full heavy gear now. The first heavy armor perk also increases your armor rating by 20% and you can take it several times. Either 3 or 5, i forget ... so by the end of the game i will be running weightless heavy armor that is 60-100% stronger than rating.

also going to try and get some Poison bow/sneak attack action going on. You can get 6x damage with that perk but it will take a lot of grinding.

This constant menu usage for weapons and spells is annoying.

The didn't want a hotbar/taskbar getting in the way of their pretty trees so you can't just click the weapons/spells you want. so they embedded everything. Then because they embedded everything they had to try and get cute and have the game try to remember the combinations you used. The next time you equip XXX spell the game automatically equips the same sword you used with that spell. Annoying as fuck.

If you adapt your weapons to every situation you have to go back and and take off the stupid crap the computer chose for you and put the stuff you want. As spells don't override the weapon the computer chose either. If you choose fire for the left hand, the computer puts a sword in your right hand. You can't just click on another spell for the right hand UNTIL you unequip sword. Grrrrrrrrr.

It's actually difficult for you to understand why a woman wouldn't want her husband sitting around gaming every spare moment he's at home?

:spock:

We've lived together for 14 years and been married for 10. She knows how I get when a really good kick ass game like this comes out (I certainly don't react this way to all of them) and doesn't give me any shit about it for the first few days.

But those first few days are pretty much over at this point.

I'm developing a thing for Lydia - sure she's stupid and occasionally spoils my sneak attacks, and sets off EVERY SINGLE PRESSURE TRAP IN THE GAME OVER AND OVER AND OVER :banghead: but she's quiet, dutiful, hauls my stuff and has great eyes. I have her decked out in super duper Orcish armor. She actually does a good bit of damage with a staff and sword.
She's dead, the vampire horde killed her.

Before children, I spent a lot of time gaming. Now, I can't really justify it even to myself, much less my wife. Maybe as our kids get older, it will allow more time for it. I have a tendency to really go overboard when I start gaming, though.

My outlet right now is a tabletop DnD session every other week, and I love it. Some of the people I game with, though.. wow. They're a couple without kids. They play in about 4 different tabletop groups. She was in the Beta of ToR this weekend. He's playing Skyrim. They've got Zelda on preorder as well as Assassin's Creed. Listening to them talk about gaming, I don't see how there are enough hours in the day for the two of them to do so much damned gaming. Then I remember that they don't have little kids.

She died on me a couple of times, too, but I just went back to my last save.

Finally was able to put in a couple solid hours into this last night. Did the very first dungeon they send you into (the one with the Golden Claw) and emerged a level 6. This game is freaking crazy - I saw a colony of ants working on a tree stump, just ridiculous.

My dual wielding monster is progressing quite well. Love their new leveling system, you actually have to make tough decision on how to spread your points. Looks like they took a lot of their good ideas from Fallout 3 and made them better.

P.S. Is it always one perk point per level?

I learned that the dragons you meet on the main quest are much tougher than the random encounter dragons. Went up to one flailing away with my orcish sword - the goddamn thing grabbed me in its mouth, shook me a chew toy and then spit out my corpse. Ouch.

That happened at about 1:15 this morning, so it seemed prudent to call it a day. Will reconvene with that bad boy tonight.

Yes. One perk per level. Wonder if they instituted a level cap.

I sure hope not. One perk per level is awesome as you won't max out too fast (unless, like you said, they instituted a cap).

I need to figure out some good ways to push up my skills to use the perks where I want them. Heavy Armor and destruction for example. Destruction is going up ok, but heavy armor is creeping because I kill things so fast most times. Thinking of letting some single archers take shots at me while I heal for a while to see if that will skill it up some.

Yeah, same way as in Oblivion. You stand there and let a couple wolves (or something else that might befit your level) go at you while healing. You're leveling both Armor and Restoration at the same time. Also, for faster leveling, sneak as much as possible even if there's no reason to. Just be careful not to outlevel yourself (when you have perks, but can't use them on specific skills because you haven't been using them). Also, trainers are beneficial.

Near the sleeping tree mammoth/giant camp there's a sniper's perch the giants can't get to. Lure them there and take them out. So broken.

My bow and archery skills are powerful enough now that I can take out giants just by firing two shots from cover for 3x sneak damage.

They also hate water. Run to a stream wade in they retreat pop back out shoot a couple arrows and jump back in. At 10th level it takes 20 or so shots to bring a giant down and one hit and you get launched into orbit literally.

What do you use the perks for I have about 8-9 and not sure how they work? I'm trying to get destruction up and not having luck after the initial time.

From what I read, there is a level 50 "soft cap". You can continue to level up to 70 but you stop getting perks after 50.

I get it today from Amazon, can't wait.

You do it in the constellations screen, skills when you don't have a level up to do. Just use the arrows to move around and select where you want to put new ones. It should show the skill you need to place in a slot, and what your current is.

Go to skills and invest points into those constellations. It's pretty self explanatory once you read the description under each star. For example, I'm putting my perks into One-Handed (for dual wielding) and into Heavy Armor. My one-handed weapons are now doing 40% more damage, use 25% less stamina on heavy attacks and dual wielding attacks are 20% faster (which is huge). My Heavy Armor items receive a 40% bonus to their rating.
