I don't visit buffet-style restaurants often, but we went to one this evening. I always struggle with how much is appropriate to tip the "wait staff" at places like that. On the one hand, they are "waiting" on you. On the other hand, they don't really serve your food or anything - they just make sure your drink is full.

So what say you, oh wise people of the Planet? What's the rule for tipping at a buffet?

I tip half of what I normally do.

for lunch, I'll leave a buck or two if they fetch drinks.

for dinner, usually 2 bucks, 3 if they were good.

They take your plates and fill your drinks. I'd figure a buck or two per person, depending on how long you're there and how elaborate the buffet is.

I try not to fall anywhere.

But I try to eat at buffet-style restaurant even less frequently.

$1/person if it's lunchtime, $2/person for dinner.

Depends. How frequently are they checking your drink and seeing if you need anything?

If they're on the ball, I'm leaving a pretty normal tip. If they're not anywhere in sight, not much.

You're supposed to tip those people? I just ask for a bunch of to-go boxes and fill them with stuff I presume they'll like. Then I leave the boxes for them to take home.

I usually just tip 15% at buffet's. Except for Jade Mongolian BBQ here in Lawrence, I tip that dude like $10 because he is the best waiter I've ever seen, his name is Allen, ask for him if you ever go there.

What the heck kind of buffets are you eating at? I haven't seen a buffet restaurant in years.

Maybe a Chinese one or two, I guess.

What did Gaz ever do to you? The Gaz option whether retired or not, should always be included in any thread that involves food. For instance, I only tip I leave is Gaz.

Allen does kick ass if he is the guy I am thinking of...and those little mexican dudes do a bang up job on the BBQ thingy as well. (Beats the hell out of HuHot in Topeka--that place is puke city as far as I'm concerned)

I tip the same amount at buffet as I would if I was ordering off of the menu, as long as they get my plates and refill my drinks they will get tipped 20-25%.

I really don't know why you should tip the waiters/waitresses at any restaurant though.... The cooks are the ones who actually do all the work. :cuss:

Nice Guy Eddie (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001606/): C'mon, throw in a buck!
Mr. Pink (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000114/): Uh-uh, I don't tip.
Nice Guy Eddie (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001606/): You don't tip?
Mr. Pink (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000114/): Nah, I don't believe in it.
Nice Guy Eddie (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001606/): You don't believe in tipping?
Mr. Blue (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0120483/): You know what these chicks make? They make shit.
Mr. Pink (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000114/): Don't give me that. She don't make enough money that she can quit.
Nice Guy Eddie (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001606/): I don't even know a fucking Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight: you don't ever tip?
Mr. Pink (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000114/): I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.
Mr. Blue (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0120483/): Hey, our girl was nice.
Mr. Pink (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000114/): She was okay. She wasn't anything special.
Mr. Blue (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0120483/): What's special? Take you in the back and suck your dick?
Nice Guy Eddie (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001606/): I'd go over twelve percent for that.

I can tell you this. My wife works at Golden Corral at a waitress. She's been doing this for a long time. According to her it's the hardest job she's had.

Agreeden. I pretty much stopped going to buffets years ago, exceptions being when I'm with someone who REALLY wants to go. As I get older, I notice some real nastiness - inbred mouth-breather types manhandling the buffet food with their snotty, unwashed hands and exhaling, coughing, sneezing while managing to defeat the purpose of the sneezeguard. Less than appetizing to me.

But when I do go, I tip the same, more or less, than I would at any other joint.

A buck for lunch when I am with my work peeps. If I am with the family for dinner I leave $2-$5 depending on service.
