$18M Being Spent to Redesign Recovery.gov Web Site
July 08, 2009 9:50 PM

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: For those concerned about stimulus spending, the General Services Administration sends word tonight that $18 million in additional funds are being spent to redesign the Recovery.gov Web site.

The new Web site promises to give taxpayers more information about where their money is going than the current version of the site.

“Recovery.gov 2.0 will use innovative and interactive technologies to help taxpayers see where their dollars are being spent,” James A. Williams, commissioner of GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service, says in a press release announcing the contract awarded to Maryland-based Smartronix Inc. “Armed with easy access to this information, taxpayers can make government more accountable for its decisions.”

The contract calls for spending $9.5 million through January, and as much as $18 million through 2014, according to the GSA press release.

“We are pleased that another major milestone has been achieved," Earl E. Devaney, chairman of the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, says in the press release. “We thank the GSA for its assistance and look forward to working with Smartronix."

UPDATE: The RNC has released a new web ad mocking the Obama administration's decision to allocate additional funds to the redesign of the Recovery.gov Web site.

How on earth does it take 18 million to build, operate, and update a website? Until the waste ends, this will go on for eternity.

JFC! $18 million more for a website to tell us how they're saving us money?! I guess server space and 25 year old programmers are at a premium. Isn't this admin grand? I'm gonna puke.

Though, the avatar is a perfect visual of what we the taxpayer are getting from our Mario-gov't.

Someone should be in jail for this.

You've gotta be kidding me. I'll buy a database program and put it up on a website for half that.

This is criminal.

PLEASE, start bombarding your senators and congressman with phone calls and e-mails. Take your rights back.

Is there a single person here who wants to explain / defend spending $18 M of my tax dollars on a website that's supposed to show how the government is spending the rest of my tax dollars?:cuss:

Don't even bother with saying "that's just a drop in the bucket"... that's irrelevant.

I'm all ears.

C'mon people this is all about the new freedom, the freedom to be raped. Remember kids the last official act of any government is to loot the people.

I did read one. Some IT spook was going on about how it was going to have 7 full time folks, lots of cool design changes and on and on. Best part was when he said that the redesign charges do NOT include populating any data. That will be done by government departments and staff and others.

So now dont you feel better. It could have been a lot more. Thats the point I think we should all embrace.

What a gig! Play around with graphics all day and let someone else do the dirty work of actually collecting the data. I'd like to know who has a gov't connection within Smartronix.

It's government decision making. Happens all the time. Sad that it wont change. When there is no incentive to save and produce this is what you get.

I don't think you'll find me saying on this forum anything other than that our budgetary process is a complete clusterf*ck.

To then infer the conclusion, however that all government processes are necessarily going to result in the same levels of squandered resources ignores the reality of times when we have done it better, or other countries that have done it far more responsibly.

To focus on the thousands of people ripped off by Bernie Madoff is to ignore the billions of people that he didn't rip off.
