I cut our cable tv service a few months ago so I have been putting along with my Media Center PC and most everything is working just fine. The one thing I was worried I would miss is football and I could not find HD streams available over the net.

I learned about an FCC rule that forces cable providers to carry unencrypted high definition local channels via a service called QAM. I went to newegg and purchased a card in hopes that my having cable internet service only would still get me that QAM signal and it worked! Had it not worked I would have gone out and purchased an antenna but I really wanted to avoid that as my local CBS station, where the Chiefs play, broadcasts from about 75 miles away which is outside of the range of a regular set of rabbit ears.

I am ****ing stoked right now and am doing a dance in glee.

Hurray for the FCC!!!!

Media Center PC - $50 plus scraps
TV Card - $36.99
Saving $1k per year, free local HD, and a big FU to Cox? - Priceless

I pay $17 per month to Cox and get all my locals in HD via QAM. I love it.

I am paying $45 a month but that is because I could not make due with the $30 per month internet service.

OKAY, my new Panasonic Plasma tv has a QAM tuner built in. Can someone give tell me what the channel numbers in Topeka Are?

I also have just an internet Cox line. I am assuming I just plug my cable directly to the tv and set the tuner to cable and manually enter the number like 133-4.

You should be able to do a scan from your TV and the available channels should just show up.

I tried that but got nothing. I tried both on cable and antenna in the program channels menu.

I tried that but got nothing. I tried both on cable and antenna in the program channels menu.Thats odd. That should have worked. That was how I stumbled upon them a few weeks after I got my HDTV last year. Got to channel 71 and all of the sudden I was up in the 90's thinking to myself "WTF is this?" Then I realized, LOST in HD. Hot damn!!!

Thanks and rep!You are welcome sir.
