Hell, who am I kidding. Ewing Kauffman could come back and start a thread, and we'd still be doomed at this point.

Um...c'mon now. Those numbers are a product of his 8 injury games. Gordon may not be Longoria, but he ain;t that bad. We most certainly have worse hitters in our lineup.

Possible, but I didn't see a fielders choice. I just know that the play was attempted at home, where Gordon was easily safe, and the catcher tried to throw out the runner, who was heading towards third.

Frank White was never a "great" offensive player.

I'd have to look it up, but I'd imagine his career batting average is somehwere around .255, and his other numbers were pretty mundane.

However, Frank White was clutch.

There wasn't anyone else I wanted at bat, other than George Brett, when you needed a hit.

And, as far as I'm concerned, he was the greatest defensive 2nd baseman ever.

Very true on all accounts. I do recall my old man telling me that Frank wasn't really a great offensive player, just serviceable. But he does recall several games that Frank was clutch. This was well before my time, so any information from the old fellers who seen them play is always appreciated by yours truly.

I do recall my old man saying that Frank batted clean-up during the '85 WS against the Redbirds, and Frank led the team with six RBI and slugged a key home run in game three.

But you are 100% correct on the greatest defensive 2nd baseman. He won eight AL Gold Glove awards during his eighteen seasons in the majors.

What I didn't realize was that '85 team got so far in the playoffs and won it all (Yes, the controversial call helped) that they, as a whole team, they were

.252 BA - Ranked 13th out of 14th in AL teams

When you refer to "he", you are talking about Howser, I'm assuming? Still, the early 80's Royal teams had strong pitching.

Plus, IIRC, they had a "drug problem" during the end of the '83 season, where the Royals almost literally cleaned house, and people thought that '84 season was going to be a rebuilding year, but they suprised alot of people.

What I didn't know is that Cecil Fielder was part of the Royals before he was traded to Toronto in '83.

The 1978 season, however, ended on another sour note as Herzog demanded that John Mayberry be traded or he would threaten to leave the team. This resulted in Mayberry being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays.

After the Royals finished in second place in 1979, Herzog was fired and replaced by Jim Frey. Most believe that the firing was due to Herzog's strained relationship with the Royals front office including General Manager Joe Burke, owner Ewing Kauffman, and Kauffman's wife, Muriel.

I don't remember Whitey being the one demanding they trade Matberry, but I can understand it.

I was a big fan of Mayberry, but the guy never really commited himself to learning to hit.

The shift that opposing teams put on against Mayberry was as radical as any I've ver seen, and he continued to keep pulling balls into that shift.

Fred Lynn from Boston won the whole thing. George Scott finished 8th.

Mayberry finished 3rd technically, since Jackson and Scott finished at a tie with 36 HR's. Mayberry finished 2nd in RBI's behind Scott.

Fred Lynn from Boston won the whole thing. George Scott finished 8th.

Mayberry finished 3rd technically, since Jackson and Scott finished at a tie with 36 HR's. Mayberry finished 2nd in RBI's behind Scott.

I could have sworn there was a year that Scott won the HR title.

I can't remember, but I'd bet his last season as a Royal, he hit fewer than 27 homers and batted at right arund .220.

Mayberry came to Game 4 of 1977 playoff game against the Yankees drunk or horribly hung over. In that game he droppped a critical pop up that led to a tying or winning run and claimed after the game he had a toothache.
Whitey was livid. He demanded a that mayberry be given away and he was correct in doing so.

And yes he did have a strained relationship with the GM, Joe Burke. Burke was good guy and smart as hell, but he refused to get us the RH power bat that Whitey wanted to put us over the top. Burke did not like Whitey and after the 79 season, after 3 consecutive AL West titles, he bounced him. The Roylas drew 2 million again, the entire pitching staff slumped the entire year, the team finished 79-83 and anybody with a brain knew the Royals weren't done pounding the AL West. But Burke took a chance and landed on his feet.

It was a shitty deal and I hate Burke to this day for it. If Burke would have plucked Larry Hisle in the early free agent days instead of letting him get signed by ... the f*cking Brewers, and in turn signing Jerry Terrel (another Bible thumper in the mold of Trey Hillman, except Terrell actually made it to the major league) imagine the damage this franchise would have done. I shudder at the thought of it.

John was a dead pull hitter and the league adjusted. He slumped horribly but still put up good numbers. Homered in game 1 of the ALCS at Yankee stadium that year and was the best glove at 1b in the division for 6 years.

But that dropped pop up will never leave my memory.

Oh, no doubt, WTI. At times like those, we come together. Even with pete.

I've made it point over these last several seasons to live and let live, but I'm about to change that style since DJ's undropped Nut seems to get his feelings hurt so easy that he's carrying a cross from spring training.

Is there a stat concerning how many fuckheaded decisions a manager makes that costs a team a victory.....I've seen the stat where an individual player is either +/- for games vs. an avg. player......Fuckhead has to be -15

What possessions?

Trailor?

Really? You're gonna go with the white-trash route? Eh, whatever works fo you, I suppose. I'd have at least gone with "His Pujols blow-up doll and Musial hair clippings." At least there'd have been some foundation there. You're just being lazy, Phog. Just lazy.

P.S. "You're Missing a Great Game" is the better of Whitey's books, IMO.

I got distracted by the BBQ, but what I did catch was a horribly managed game.

Hmm... well I don't have that book, for sure. Heh. Care to elaborate a little bit?

Just chronicles Whitey's time with the Royals and Cards. He had some pretty good observations of his time in the game. He discusses Mayberry, Burke and guys like Amos Otis (Otis hated Whitey- gave him the nic White Rat), because he felt AO played too deep and that cost us on Paul Blair's pop up to CF in the 9th inning of game 5 of the 77 ALCS.

I liked The White Rat better. If I want an old mans perspective on how much better things were "when I was young", I'll listen to myself talk.

Amos Otis had the potential to be a great player, and one of the best CFers in the game, but even I, in my lack of knowledge of the game back then, thought he played too deep, and still wonder how good he would have been if he let Whitey show him the right way to do things.

It's a little more curmudgeonly, for sure. But it also seems to cover a little more territory. He seems to be a little more off the cuff in it as well.

To each their own.

Because you would do it from an antagonistic perspective and it would be clear that you derive enjoyment from the pain of Royals fans.

Otis played a shallow CF in the early days at Municipal Stadium. I was the game in 1971(?) where he crashed into the wall, (no padding, no warning track). He didn't get hurt real bad, but from that day forward, AO did not play as shallow.

Also, he would get pissed at Whitey for sitting him down against hard throwing RH pitchers. AO got beaned by Jim Kearn (?) and he went through a period of bailing out. Whitey would always sit him down against Nolan Ryan and Jim Bibby, guys like that. AO really held that against Whitey.

I think this hits the nail on the head here. You're not doing it to give shit to Hillman. You do it to be c*nt and because somebody bruised your fantasy managerial ego during spring training.

I vaguely remember those things.

Amos needed to get over it and let Whitey coach him.

So I was at the game tonight, and I love watching games in person but goddamn if that wasn't one of the most boring "pitching duels" I've ever seen through 7 innings. It was like watching paint peel. Grienke didn't seem to have his stuff tonight but was still effective, and, well, everybody looks good against the Royals lineup.

Now I'm home and drinking more, so I'll care even less shortly.

You folded out, no? The hand didn't finish so I have no idea if you took me or not.

If you had as much as a pair, I'll send it your way, but I left when you folded and didn't get back into the next two hands.
