THIS AIN'T NO TEA PARTY
See rebellion at grass roots
Watch congressional greetings at town hall meetings at home

Rep. Tim Bishop, D-N.Y.
WASHINGTON – Call it the tea party that never ends.

A rebellion is brewing in home congressional districts of incumbent Democrats evidenced by the reaction at several town hall meetings.
Members are being forced to suspend meetings with their constituents, screaming protesters are being dragged out of events by police and officials are being greeted by protest signs and chants.
Rep. Tim Bishop, D-N.Y., has called off further events.
"I had felt they would be pointless," he said. "There is no point in meeting with my constituents and [to] listen to them and have them listen to you if what is basically an unruly mob prevents you from having an intelligent conversation."

In Bishop's case, his decision came on the heels of a June 22 event he held in Setauket, N.Y., in which protesters dominated the meeting by shouting criticisms at the congressman for his positions on energy policy, health care and the bailout of the auto industry. You can watch that confrontation here.
Police had to be called to escort the 59-year-old Democrat to his car safely.

Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., got an earful, too – especially on the health-care issue.
It's not just members of the House who are getting lectured. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., heard from a very well-informed veteran – to the enthusiastic applause of all those gathered.

Constituents compare lawmaker to devil
Watch what happened when Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-TX, went out to meet constituents recently.

It seems to be the same all over the country.
At a health care town hall event in Syracuse, N.Y., in July, police were called in to restore order, and at least one heckler was taken away by local police.

Close to 100 sign-carrying protesters greeted Rep. Allen Boyd, D-Fla., at a late June community college small-business development forum in Panama City, Fla. Last week, Danville, Va., anti-tax tea party activists claimed they were "refused an opportunity" to ask Rep. Thomas Perriello, D-Va., a question at a town hall event and instructed by a plainclothes police officer to leave the property after they attempted to hold up protest signs.

Sen. Carl Levin, D-MI, was chased today by a crowd saying the Pledge of Allegiance, as seen below:

Veteran blasts non-veteran Rep. Bishop
The biggest source of protests are the health-care bill, the $787 billion economic stimulus package and the cap-and-trade legislation. They're also angry about Barack Obama's refusal to release his birth certificate to prove he is a "natural born citizen" and constitutionally eligible to serve in the White House.

Congressional Democrats are anticipating things will only get worse this month when Congress in recess. On Tuesday, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., who handles incumbent retention duties for House Democrats in addition to chairing the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, met with freshman members to discuss their plans for the month-long August recess.
Some are planning to do their local constituent work by telephone conference calls rather than in-person meetings.

Some Democrats are blaming Republicans and lobbyists for stirring up the hornet's nest.
Brian Smoot, who served as political director at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, warned Republicans about engaging in these kinds of ambushes.
"It's a risk that they align themselves with such a small minority in the party ... They risk alienating moderates," he said.

This is public excuse making to NOT hold townhall meetings. They do NOT want to be embarrassed by actually having to answer constituent questions. All three of my reps (Murray, cantwell, & Baird) have ZERO townhalls set for this August.

They know that the public is against a costly health care plan that won't cover everyone, will lead to rationed care, not be paid for and an eventual public only option. Not to mention higher energy costs if C&T passes and an ever increasing unemployment problem. Over 2.5 million people out of work since January. They said thier policies were "jobs, jobs, jobs" and all we have seen are layoffs, layoffs, layoffs. They do not want to face the wrath of those that they represent, it IS that simple.

I hope that I am wrong because I woud love to attend a meeting and ask one or all of my reps a question. The psychos that are just disrupting the meetings should be dragged away but they must hold the townhalls or they should be voted out in 2010.

Oh, wait, maybe I'm wrong on who would look like the fool if they did that.

The problem is, the people shutting these town halls down are people that would never vote for a democrat ever. They are not the will of the people. They are a small minority preventing a true discussion from happening, and it's sickening.

I mean, if I'm a senator, all I'm gonna do is think: Hmmm, a bunch of wingnuts showed up at my town hall meeting. Guess I'll just stop having them and do what I was going to do anyways.

Irony at its finest! The title of the thread taken from Malcom X who used this line about the killing of JFK. He later lightened his viewpoints and was killed by Louis Farrakhan (ok it has never stood up in court but anyone who claims it was not his call is naive to say the least) but I digress. Now the right is using this line against the left lead by a black man wow just wow! I can not wait for Beck or Limbaugh to proclaim in a speech that they "have a dream" LMAO

I do take a stand but that does not mean I have to buy the bullshit from the left or the right. I have said several times that I am middle of the road leaning to the right. We as a people have two choices and both have proven they are clueless. I believe in protecting our borders and removing those who do not belong here and controling who comes in.

I believe in one person one vote. You can polish a turd all day long and in the end all you have is a shiny turd. The left and the right are soulless assholes and I refuse to swear loyalty to either. If that makes you think poorly of me fine.

Those are Democrats getting dragged out of those meetings. Not republicans according to the article.

Don't know where you get that. From the article:

"anti-tax tea party activists"

"chased today by a crowd saying the Pledge of Allegiance"

"angry about Barack Obama's refusal to release his birth certificate"

...

"Some Democrats are blaming Republicans and lobbyists for stirring up the hornet's nest.
Brian Smoot, who served as political director at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, warned Republicans about engaging in these kinds of ambushes.
"It's a risk that they align themselves with such a small minority in the party ... They risk alienating moderates," he said."

Elsewhere:

Republicans, with an eye toward 2010, are keeping close track of the climate at Democratic events.

“We’ve seen Russ Carnahan, we’ve seen Tim Bishop, we’ve seen some other people face some very different crowds back home,” said National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Pete Sessions (R-Texas). “The days of you having a town hall meeting where maybe 15 or 20 of your friends show up — they’re over. You’ve now got real people who are showing up — and that’s going to be a factor.”

Asked later how or whether the GOP would use the confrontations against Democrats, Sessions responded: “Wait till next year.”

And this:

Right-Wing Harassment Strategy Against Dems Detailed In Memo: ‘Yell,’ ‘Stand Up And Shout Out,’ ‘Rattle Him’

This morning, Politico reported that Democratic members of Congress are increasingly being harassed by “angry, sign-carrying mobs and disruptive behavior” at local town halls. For example, in one incident, right-wing protesters surrounded Rep. Tim Bishop (D-NY) and forced police officers to have to escort him to his car for safety.

This growing phenomenon is often marked by violence and absurdity. Recently, right-wing demonstrators hung Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-MD) in effigy outside of his office. Missing from the reporting of these stories is the fact that much of these protests are coordinated by public relations firms and lobbyists who have a stake in opposing President Obama’s reforms.

The lobbyist-run groups Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks, which orchestrated the anti-Obama tea parties earlier this year, are now pursuing an aggressive strategy to create an image of mass public opposition to health care and clean energy reform. A leaked memo from Bob MacGuffie, a volunteer with the FreedomWorks website Tea Party Patriots, details how members should be infiltrating town halls and harassing Democratic members of Congress:

– Artificially Inflate Your Numbers: “Spread out in the hall and try to be in the front half. The objective is to put the Rep on the defensive with your questions and follow-up. The Rep should be made to feel that a majority, and if not, a significant portion of at least the audience, opposes the socialist agenda of Washington.”

– Be Disruptive Early And Often: “You need to rock-the-boat early in the Rep’s presentation, Watch for an opportunity to yell out and challenge the Rep’s statements early.”

– Try To “Rattle Him,” Not Have An Intelligent Debate: “The goal is to rattle him, get him off his prepared script and agenda. If he says something outrageous, stand up and shout out and sit right back down. Look for these opportunities before he even takes questions.”

The memo above also resembles the talking points being distributed by FreedomWorks for pushing an anti-health reform assault all summer. Patients United, a front group maintained by Americans for Prosperity, is currently busing people all over the country for more protests against Democratic members. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the NRCC, has endorsed the strategy, telling the Politico the days of civil town halls are now “over.”

Meanwhile, AHIP, the trade group and lobbying juggernaut representing the health insurance industry is sending staffers to monitor town halls and other right-wing front groups are stepping up their ad campaign to smear reform efforts. The strategy for defeating reform — recently outlined by an influential lobbyist to the Hill newspaper as “delay” then “kill” — is becoming apparent. By delaying a vote until after the August recess, lobbyists are now seizing upon recess town halls as opportunities to ambush lawmakers and fool them into believing there is wide opposition to reform.

JFC I guess disent is only acceptable when someone throws a shoe at a republican president.

Good for these protestors. They seem to be passionate on watching their country being turned into a third world country. I hope they keep it up. Enough to when the press actually starts reporting it and exposing these low life's for what they are....money sucking shills.

And if any of my representatives votes for any health care that has tax dollar funding for abortions I'll be first in line to start throwing tomatoes at them.
