Boy, I sure hope he didn't breach national security sharing these secrets. Treason's serious business. Maybe he's a double agent, and once he's sent to prison he'll reveal that it's been Raider Illustrated all along.

ps Your relationship has deteriorated with the Chiefs so you toss out all these rumors? Genious! That'll help your cause a whole lot. Why, I bet they'll treat you just like real, legitimate press now.

Well, whatever credibility his "reporting" had is gone.

Maybe the most interesting article Nick ever wrote. My .02

1. They finally admit they sugar coated things in order to keep press credentials.

2. I find it really hard to believe that no team would take Dwayne Bowe.

3. I don't think it was a secret to anyone that they tried and/or wanted to trade away guys that didn't fit the 34 or older players like Waters.

4. I don't think it's a surprise to anyone that KC and Haley were interested in Boldin.

5. As far as there being no other candidates for the job other than Pioli - that's how KC has always operated. Vermeil was a known hiring before it happened, as was Herm.

6. I beg that Nick keeps away from anything Derrick Thomas related.

What will you get? Well, for instance, Scott Pioli tried to trade Dwayne Bowe around the draft, but NO team would take him and that's why he's in the dog house right now. He didn't do anything wrong. He worked his tail off in the offseason and is in the best shape of his life. But the head coach really wants him to be a leader and a productive one. They realized that he has something special, but they are not quite sure how to maximize his talent.

I find it hard to believe that Haley of all people wouldn't know how to maximize the talent of a wideout.

Pioli tried to trade Brian Waters, Glenn Dorsey, Tamba Hali and anyone else he felt wasn't a fit for the Chiefs. He knew what we all knew, and that's NOT a bad thing. He knows this is a big work in progress and I give him props for coming to the conclusion that we all as fans came to - that the Chiefs’ draft hasn't produced the results on the field that this organization needed to rise from the ashes of losing. He's trying to change that. Can he get it done? Who knows.

I can also tell you for a fact that the Chiefs have been trying to land Anquan Boldin since March, and that if he had been traded to Kansas City he'd have signed a long-term contract in a heartbeat. Compensation was a big issue with Arizona, as was the fact they weren't real excited about trading him to Kansas City to be reunited with Haley. He didn't leave on the best terms when he raided Arizona’s coaching staff

Other than Carthon I can't think of any other coaches Haley might have stole or raided from the Cards. Pendergast was fired and Haley hired him.

Even if the trade rumor is true, he is in the dog house because of something he has no control over, that no other team wanted him? Really? LOL

I completely disagree. If there is any running game this year, it will be in large part because of Waters. If there is a passing game, it will be in large part because of Bowe. Dorsey and Hali didn't look that bad in the first preseason game, in particular Dorsey.

I won't necessarily agree with your take on Waters and Hali. They surely could have gotten something for Bowe unless they wanted something insane in return. The screenplay thing is funny as hell. He should be flattered for the publicity... they say there is no such thing as bad publicity... but then again, this very well, could dispell that myth.

If he believes all the crap he is writing in this piece, he should have no issue with other people reading it.

Nick has ZERO sources. None.

The Chiefs tried to trade Dwayne Bowe and they had no takers? That's complete and utter bullshit.

He is massively butthurt that his credentials were pulled no matter how much he comes across like he's not. Now, he's back to making up stories to satisfy his agenda.

**** off Nick. You aren't worth the bandwith it took to write this post.

I met Nick about 8 years ago. He's really a compulsive liar. He has a sickness and it's a shame people fuel that by believing his nonsense stories.

It's hilarious that he's trying to push off this Bowe story. Even if it had a shred of truth, a guy like Todd Haley can't maximize his talent? That is hilarious. And wouldn't you want to showcase him instead of pushing him further down the depth chart.

Honestly, the guy is a disgrace to anyone who enjoys football. He can go fuck his buddy Herm and Carl to form the loser trifecta.

I want GoChiefs to come in here and apologize to me and the rest of us who said Nick was covering for the Chiefs when we said that is exactly what he was doing.

Why should he? He gets paid from Nick, not from anyone here. Whether or not you choose to believe anything he says is entirely up to you.

This was posted in the premium forum from Nick to his premium members.

Nick is not why I contribute to WPI. To be honest the premium forum is not very good. I want to help support a Chiefs site. I do the same with this site.
I am not defending Nick or his writing, thats his cross to bare. I think taking his post from a members only forum and posting it over here just to ridicule him, is a D!CK move.

I think we all agree that Nick is a first class douche nozzle, but he has managed to really out do himself with this latest abortion of an article. WPI is a clown car and assbag Nick is the one driving it. This guy is a joke. He charges $9.25 a month to hold back all this stuff that he had the scoop on? Give me a ****ing break!! The free media kicked his ass so now he claims he had the scoop and didn't release this info to paying customers because of loyalty to his buddies? What kind of backward ass logic is that? Cite a source (a person with knowledge of the situation) and report what you know. The outcomes of these situations will show whether your any good or not. Too bad for him we all know WPI is nothing more than a "throw shit on the wall and see if it sticks outfit."

He owns a business and just told his customers that he's holding out on something they're paying for because he's more loyal to his friends than his customers. He sounds like a jilted ex GF. "My lady kicked me out of the house so I'm gonna burn the mother ****er to the ground." Through his writing he did manage to give people an inside look at what a whiny bitch he is, but not much else. Nothing he said is breaking news to anybody that frequents this board. He didn't care to throw anybody under the bus to show what a great reporter he is. He's doing it now because he has several sources to cite. To bad for him they are Adam Schefter, Chris Mortenson, and Jack Harry. You've got him doing what he does and then make it even worse by having a clown like GoChiefs contributing. Also I'm not a fashion guru but I have a tough time taking someone seriously that goes on TV wearing jeans, crocs, and sweaters from 1967. Have never seen Schefter on TV when he wasn't suited up and he's the best in the business. Athan might want to try and at least look the part. ESPN had to hire the dude because he was owning Mort and making that whole outfit look like the B team (like the KC Star does to WPI.) If you are willing to pay for this drivel it just validates my opinion that people should have to take an aptitude test before being allowed to reproduce.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter... I remember going on a trip when I was back in high school (about 4 or 5 years ago) and wanted to grab a magazine to read. Without really looking, I grabbed the first Chiefs-looking thing I could find that didn't have to do with fantasy football. Turns out, it was a WPI magazine. Read about half of an article & decided it was a waste of money while looking to see if the ads were any good.

First of all, those referring to nick as "assclown" are proabably also those who find themselves unabashedlyattacking many a whitlock piece. A little double sided no?

Secondly, if you have ever covered anything at any level, you know things are often off the record. People share info they wont let you use. One school of thought is that you should never go off record. My school of thought is to try to take everything on record, but if you can't, it's better to nkow valuable info and not be able to use it than be left in the dark.

Therefore, anyone who is upset that Nick would know info and withhold it from his constituents is ridiculous.

Also, if you think other websites with creds won't cater to the wims of the Chiefs PR dept. and upper brass, you're wrong. Few publications have true amnesty in the KC sports scene. Unfortuantely, there aren't enough people out there who give two craps about forum based websites to raise a big enough stink about pulled creds.

If you think BarryPeirano would have been granted creds in River Falls if it weren't for his unwavering, unforgiving, mostly blind optimism, then you're wrong.

AP, or any other website with creds will tame criticism to keep their seat in the press box.

That being said, I never hid frommy opinions, I was just careful about how I expressed them. I have drawn theire of teh Chiefs PR dept. for things I've said, but I'm not silly about how I write.

Lastly, WPI is changing, and it will improve immensely. If you want to hang out and see what we're going to offer, you're welcome.

Dear PatC,

Heh. Funny.

I understand more than most the need to keep some things off the record. But when you're given independent information from witnesses unconnected to the Chiefs you run the story. I know of at least two instances in which Nick squashed stories where that independent confirmation was given - big stories. Stories which were even yanked from the premium section.

I feel badly for WPI but there is no defending this patsy behavior.

Finally, the "assclown" part is automatically inserted any time somebody types his full name; Nick "Assclown" Athan.

P.S. whoever bashes me for my typos is below immature. I typed this in about 90 seconds with no revision.

he admitted that his organization was simply ballwashing carl peterson for years. he refuses to back down from the Shanahan story which was proven false. he also admitted that now they don't have any access, so it's all just blogs being written by dorks watching on TV. and this is all in his "you should still pay for this" defense. nice work captain, you've drilled a hole in the bottom of your own boat.

Not disclosing things one learns off the record is one thing. "Skew[ing]" reporting b/c of personal relationships is the very definition of a lack of professionalism and is proof positive of everything critics have always said about Athan.

Wonder if Clay really defends Nick because he believes Nick is right or if he's just doing it for the paycheck(he does get paid for WPI right?) and for a chance to right on WPI.

And how did people on WPI react to this news?

Nick is not why I contribute to WPI. To be honest the premium forum is not very good. I want to help support a Chiefs site. I do the same with this site.
I am not defending Nick or his writing, thats his cross to bare. I think taking his post from a members only forum and posting it over here just to ridicule him, is a D!CK move.

The free forum isn't any good, either! Arrowhead Pride and the other SBNation sites are posting insightful information because, unlike your userbase, they don't defend their right to be stupid! "Is just the internets man i dont have to put any thought into this". It's not that insightful pieces don't exist on the internet, it is that they don't exist at WPI.

I find it highly hypocritical to see you complain of premium information being posted when I've seen posters on WPI's free forum posting premium information from other sites several times in the past (most notably ESPN insider). I've reported it when I could, but I just can't stand to read that site often enough to do your job for you.

Hey I was browsing http://goarrowhead.weebly.com/ and I ran across this jewel....

Warpaint State of the Union
OK, here we go. The Chiefs are ready to set sail for another season of uncertainty and that can be also said about the future of Warpaint Illustrated. Over the last several months the Chiefs organization and Warpaint Illustrated, more directly yours truly, have been at odds.

When we started this six years ago our goal was to create a place where Chiefs fans could have fun, vent, complain and hopefully be entertained. As I started to establish relationships within the organization I felt obligated to offer up some control in our reporting. I wanted to protect the fact that we had unlimited access within the entire Chiefs kingdom and it skewed some of our reporting. It certainly was a benefit but it was also a curse of some kind. I was given things that I could NEVER use or make public.

I'm an intently loyal person and though many secrets were revealed to me over the last six years, I kept a lot of them to myself. Unless I was given permission to dispense those secrets, nobody ever knew about it.

As you ALL know I had a very good relationship with Herm Edwards and to this day we are still friends. I also have a good relationship with Carl Peterson and have enjoyed several conversations since he retired from the Chiefs the past several months - more on that in a minute.

But with the change in head coach, general manager and personnel guys, I don't know the new stable of power brokers in the organization. Thus, information is limited but that really doesn't matter. Most, but not ALL, of my sources have moved on.

Now Warpaint is heading in a new direction as well. One that I think long term will bring us back to what we once strived to be. As of this writing some in the Chiefs PR department believe that we don't deserve game day credentials at the moment despite our loyalty over the years. That's fine. Their intent is to slap us down as they've done to MANY other Media outlets over the last couple of decades.

That's fine. We can watch the game on TV anyway, just like we did before, and to be honest it's far better to report the game from afar because we have access to replays. It's honestly more preferred by yours truly. For the first time I can actually go to Arrowhead, have a big tailgate party and be with our fans and then go watch the game like everyone else. There is a renewed freedom in that plan. Or we can do watch parties, for those who still can't afford the Arrowhead experience.

The good news is that we can still go to press conferences and interview players in the locker room after practices. Pat Clifton will be on the ground running covering practices and media sessions. So really not much is going to change other than the fact we'll have someone on the ground full time.

As far as yours truly, I'm going to be working things on the outside reestablishing league sources and going back to the way I used to report on the Chiefs - one that has no fear of having our credentials pulled. I won't hold back and I can offer up what I know and forward it to you as we hear it. However, it won't be vindictive, because I'm not that kind of person. Nor am I going to betray friendships.

But you're going to get what I hear and I'm not going to sugar coat it. That is what you deserve. In the past, I had to walk a very fine line between the business side of Warpaint and the respect I had for the Chiefs’ organization. Since they aren't really showing us much respect anymore, there is no reason that you won't get the harder hitting style that formed the foundation of Warpaint.

So going forward, you're going to get it straight. If we can dig it up, you'll get it.

I can also say – and this was a big bone of contention with the organization and yours truly - that two members of the Chiefs’ organization, who are still employed with the organization today, indicated to me that there WAS contact with Mike Shanahan. Solid enough contact that assistant coaches were discussed. That was later verified by Jack Harry with KSHB 41 - and NO I was not his source - and Chris Mortensen at ESPN. We offered purely some insight and speculation and NEVER went public with our information as 41 and ESPN did.

But ultimately he passed on the Chiefs’ job, or any job, because it's being told in inner circles that he'll end up in Dallas next year under Jerry Jones. The Chiefs want everyone to believe that Haley was the ONLY candidate and indeed after a 45 minute discussion with Pioli he offered him the job and he accepted it. Yes the Chiefs interviewed other candidates and had a discussion with Bill Cowher and Marty Schottenheimer, but they were courtesy talks.

In regards to Pioli, talks between he and the Hunt family started toward the middle of last season. There were NO OTHER candidates for the job. There was an understanding all along that when Peterson resigned, Pioli would take over at some point when the dust settled - but we explained all that before and nobody had better insight on the entire process than Warpaint Illustrated. That irritated guys like Jason Whitlock, Mike Florio and Adam Schefter and that's why they publicly outed me like they did. And that's fine. I admit it hurt some at the time but I stand behind my sources on everything I wrote in our premium and private forum over the Pioli hire, Edwards ouster and head coaching search.

But going forward, things like that are on the horizon. At least if we hear them.

Lastly, the explanation for my recent absence is pretty simple. As many of you know a few months ago I divulged my secret passion - writing screenplays. Over that time period my writing partner and I have been working on a script about the late Derrick Thomas.

The first draft is nearly done and there is talk about finding a way to get the script to the big screen because the story is all about the inner workings of the life of DT. I've spent some time with Carl Peterson on the job and former Chiefs executive Lynn Stiles, who actually brought me into the project.

It's been a fun ride thus far and one that I want to share in FAR more detail once things progress. Those on our Premium side will get a bird’s eye view if indeed it can go from the paper to the big screen. It's a long shot, to say the least, but you never know.

Lastly, I know some long time members are leaving partly because of the economy, the fact we're not able to offer as much inside access, and the fact I've not been around as much. That's all going to change.

I hope you all stay because I believe we're going to have a lot of interesting things to talk about this season.

Anyway, just wanted to give you an update and tell you that I'm still around, going to be around and will offer up my take on the Chiefs with a greater vigor than before. So I hope you all stick around.

If not, I understand. But I hope if some of you leave, that you come back soon.

Nick

Just found a website that has an interesting article.

I believe that my source has been right almost every time. And in many cases I posted "stuff" days in advance before other sources and media outlets got a hold of the information and posted it on here for free. That source is still in place but I haven't heard diddly squat. It's a new regime in full lock down mode.

Nick

In the interests of fair disclosure, you did attack BuckKaeding (or something like that) on a Favre thread today, when he hadn't attacked you.

I can see Athan trying to film it himself after he's undoubtedly rejected by the first executive to skim the first page and throw the screenplay away. I'm in college and took a screenwriting class for the hell of it... no way would I make it in that business. Screenplays are not easy and not successfully attempted by the likes of failed journalists.

Your right different people post under the same screen name. This game is really boring, it'd be much more fun figuring out who BigRedChiefs source is.

Call it a hunch, but I think Dane values his professional reputation too much to bother with Ass Clown.

It's because he's a douchebag, posing as a journalist who hasn't broken a single, worthwhile nugget of Premium content before Mongolian Nomads have read about it via smoke signals.

His own, Premium rant just informed his subscribers that he's a sellout who didn't give them anything of value.

Brett Favre, Michael Jackson, Nicholas Athan, Barack Obama...a lot of people get their rocks off bashing the big names in sports, music, journalism and politics...you just have to roll with the punches.

I have actually never received any.

A mod/admin type person told me that Gochiefs had requested the post be removed and an anonymous do-gooder sent me a link to the other site a few minutes after the original had been removed.

I don't think I rate high enough in the Chiefs Kingdom hierarchy... they don't stoop to talk to me.
