My Dad just emailed me this.

The San Diego Chargers announced that quarterback Philip Rivers today signed a contract extension through 2015. No terms of the contract were released.
“This is a good day for the Chargers and Chargers fans,” said team President Dean Spanos. “Philip has proven he has all of the necessary qualities to be a successful quarterback in the NFL. He’s a proven winner and an unquestioned leader for this football team.”

General Manager A.J. Smith: “We feel Philip is an outstanding player with a very bright future. It’s a great feeling knowing he will be with us for many years to come.”

After joining the Chargers in 2004, Rivers became the starting quarterback in 2006 and has led the team to the playoffs in each of the past three seasons. His career record as a starter, including playoffs, is 36-18 (.667), including 22-5 (.815) at home.

Last season he eclipsed Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts’ team record for touchdown passes in a single season with a league-high 34. He also led the NFL with a quarterback rating of 105.5, another team record. He was cool under pressure throughout the year, illustrated by his passer rating of 110.7 on third down and 111.7 in the fourth quarter. Both marks ranked second in the NFL last season.

I will take untold shit for this.

But in three years, I think we'll be having hot debates about who is better - Cassel or Rivers.

And I also believe there will be a mountain of evidence that says Cassel is the better quarterback.

And hell, it might be two years.

Buck

Sproles is as good as gone, Merriman will get the Franchise Tag, and Phillips still has a couple of years left on his contract I believe.

McNeill will probably be injured by the end of the year so it won't really matter.

Rivers is a good QB, but for the life of me I can't figure out how he gets the ball to his receivers with that "lob" pass of his. The man makes the most out of his weaker than normal arm with his decision making ability and timing.

One of the few that deserves his payday.

Honestly no because when they extended LT if they hadn't people would have called them a joke franchise, they were hurt from having to many good players in the same spot.

But RB's being a dime a dozen when they need to they can replace the position without much problem.

The only positions I think the Chargers kick themselves on not getting better players at are strong safety and right tackle, they're strong everywhere else.

Well deserved. Rivers played as well any QB in the NFL last year. For my money, I would take him over Eli and Big Ben from the Great 2004 Class.

My only concern with Rivers is whether his mobility will hinder him when he gets around age 32-34. It did for Drew Bledsoe and Bernie Kosar who were on the path to greatness until their legs undermined their careers.

True. I think it is funny that people claim Eli and Big Ben have won because of the team around them yet for several years now people have been claiming that the Chargers are one of if not THE most talented team in the league yet Philip Rivers can't lead them to the super bowl? He puts up good stats but stats aren't everything. Perhaps he isn't clutch? I don't know, just throwing things out there. I personally think he's a douche and hope he chokes on a dick but that has nothing to do with his play on the field.

I agree. The man is a master of leading his receivers with perfect passes in the open field. When you think about it, that has everything to do with anticipation and touch.

QB is a judgement position, and Rivers is outstanding at seeing and hitting his open receivers with very few INT's.

I don't know where this whole Rivers is a crybaby thing started. I don't think I've ever seen him do anything more than any other QB does when he thinks a call is bad. Other than that I've never seen him complain on the mic either. He took aim at Cutler, but with the way Cutler has acted lately do you really believe that Cutler didn't initiate that stuff?

Also regarding how he led the Chargers to an 8-8 season last year....our Pass D was ranked 31st in the league, that explains a lot.

You don't pass for over 4000 yards, 34 TDs (to 11 INT), and a 105.5 QB Rating, while being "Overrated."

He is the real deal.

IDK, he looked slooooow in Saturday nights game. And on one play he tripped on his own feet for what could've been a long gainer. His speed and agility looked like that of a 30 year old back :D

I don't think he looked slow. Our O-Line sucked. And the one hole he got he tripped...but according to the Chargers beat writer he looks a lot better this year than last.

That was awesome!

That's one of those things that makes anyone who doesn't like the Chargers say he's a punk etc etc, but that's why Chargers players and fans love the guy.

Phil Rivers can't really do much about the teams best defensive player missing the year and having a ton of other key guys go down with injury.

Rivers carried that team last year.

Its not a coincidence they started winning more games when they went to Riviera as the DC. The record was in no way Rivers fault.

I've seen him bitching to the refs during a game which just pisses me off. I suppose if I see a Chiefs QB do the same thing it would piss me off too.

Or better yet, just act like you've done it before.

Jawing with fans makes you look like a dumbass, IMO.

Yeah, I understand that part, but its part of his gamer mentality. Pretty much every player bitches to the ref when they think they were wronged, even if they are wrong.

True, as much as the league might disagree with you. If the NFL had their way every player would be a robot. The No Fun League at their best.

The league disagree's with me because personality pisses off a big portion of the fan base that spends money...the middle aged white guy who thinks a black player with personality is a thug.

Numerous things the NFL is doing is all about perception they don't want the NBA perception of "Thugs takin over the game"

To be fair he wasn't cursing or anything.

I found this article w/ some quotes

----------------------------------------------------------
http://articles.latimes.com/2008/jan/17/sports/sp-nfl17?pg=1

"I'm not saying anything out of line. There's no profanity being used. I know what I'm about. My teammate knows. My family knows. Everything else I can't worry about."

* There were two notable exchanges in the Indianapolis game. The first came early in the fourth quarter, when Rivers was making his way to the locker room to have his injured knee checked. When some Colts fans yelled at him, he sarcastically responded: "Thank you, I'll be back."
-------------------------------------------------------------------

That article did point out that he called Ellis Hobbs, "The Sorriest Cornerback in the league" to Hobbs' face. I totally forgot about that, but it was pretty amusing to me, after Hobbs did the Lights Out Dance on the Chargers helmet on the 50 yard line after the 2006 Divisional playoff game against the Pats.

I will give Rivers some props because he has done something that the Chiefs haven't been able to do and that is beat the Colts. The downside (or goodside for us) is he can't beat the Pats and I assume Pioli knows his weakness pretty well.

He toned it down big time last year but opposing fans need a reason to hate.

It's like every teanm in the NHL has a goon - They're beloved to the home side and hated by the opposing fans.

I think he's brought some swagger to the teaam and their fans and he would be loved by Chief fans if he were wearing their uniform.

I wouldn't count on that. Norv brought along Aikman and now Rivers and Norv are on the same page. He's becoming a Monster QB.

It's good natured fun unless there's a camera right behind you.

Favre did the grade four "suck my dick" gesture in the middle of the field and it hasn't sullied his reputation with the media.

They won't be able to afford Shawne "roidman" Merriman, Sproles, Cro, Sean Phillips, and Marcus McNeill now :)

I think they'll be wise to let Roidman go anyways. I'd be very curious to see how good he'll be without his meds.

As for Sproles, they already have him signed up anyways.

Thats a bit silly. Cassel still has to throw 30 td's in a season and win playoff games.

And (not that we won't) but we need to get our QB some more weapons.

I never was a huge fan of Rivers and don't think he is worth that much but I am glad they are giving him a huge payday that will only hurt their team

I wasn't until that playoff game in 07 against NE when he played hurt and LT sat on the bench and then last year I thought he really lit it up and showed some leadership qualities also. I think he will prove to be a franchise QB.

After this year Aaron Rodgers will be mentioned with those 4 also.

Rivers is tough, no question. But I'm not sure anyone but Roethlisberger survives behind that sack of shit line last year.

I think he's hurt now. Not sure. I thought I heard it in passing.

As far as Rivers goes, he deserves it. He is, IMO, a lot better QB than E. Manning is. I know I know I KNOW all about the ring bullshit, but in terms of who is the better QB, I'm taking Rivers.

Roethisburger is good, it's just hard as fuck to get a read on how good. BTW everybody should keep in mind that his first Super Bowl victory was ass. Pure ass. His second one was fan-damn-tastic, but it's not like he carried them to two victories.

Cutler is good, but we'll see how he does without Shanarat. Personally I hope he rips it up so we can continue to ROFL @ Donko bitches.

I don't know if I'm going to count Brees in the same group as these guys. He's a little older.
