Could Long be victim of numbers game?

In the past, the Cardinals weren’t quite as loaded with talent. But Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic writes that the defending NFC champions have plenty of it this year, and coach Ken Whisenhunt knows that when teams must trim rosters to 53 players, the Cardinals could be letting some talent go.

Receiver Lance Long is one of those players. He spent last year on the team’s practice squad and is completing a second consecutive impressive training camp. He’s battling for a sixth receiver spot, and if he doesn’t make it, he could get claimed by the Chiefs. They could use the help, and former Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley, now the Chiefs coach, knows Long well.

“You know, I’m not going to lie,” Long said when asked how he felt going into the final preseason game. “It’s already been nerve-wracking. You try not to think about it, try to treat it like every other week. As soon as I start thinking about it, there is something that goes off in my head that says, ‘Lance, you know what’s meant to be is meant to be.’”

Serious? I've heard nothing about him prior to this article. What would a #6 WR in AZ translate to in KC?

This would be a good signing. Long has the potential to be a Wes Welker type WR.
Sub-4.4 40 time, great hands, runs good routes. Just 24 years old.
I'd happily add him to the team.

Yes he can.
And he has the kind of speed that he can take it the distance.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'd be happy if he can just catch it at this point... Definitely sounds worth a try. Anything is better than what we have right now.

I'm only speaking about the skill set he has currently.
He returned kicks in college and the kid runs a 4.35 40.
I'm not suggesting he'll be any good at it, but he CAN return kicks and has the speed to take it to the house.

Somewhere I read Leonard Pope was released. Decent TE prospect IMO. Haley is already familiar with him! :hmmm:

If he really got released I'd take him, even if he can't receive in the offense he's 6'7 and a good blocker.

Cards cut down to 53
Posted by Mike Florio on September 4, 2009 5:46 PM ET
The Arizona Cardinals have determined the 53 men with whom they'll start the season.

Unless and until, that is, the Cardinals pick up some of the players who'll be cut by other teams in the next 24 hours.

The team has announced that the following players have been released: linebacker Chase Bullock, guard Trevor Canfield, fullback Tim Castille, cornerback Jameel Dowling, defensive tackle Keilen Dykes, defensive end Alex Field, cornerback Wilfrey Fontenot, center Melvin Fowler, safety Aaron Francisco, receiver Ed Gant, linebacker Victor Hobson, linebacker David Holoway, receiver Onrea Jones, defensive tackle Rodney Leisle, fullback Regan Maui'a, guard Carlton Medder, quarterback Tyler Palko, tight end Leonard Pope, tackle Oliver Ross, receiver Steve Sanders, and running back Chris Vincent.

Any of them with less than four years of service will be subjected to waivers. Any of them with four or more years of service will become unrestricted free agents.

At one point, Pope was considered a quality prospect. He's only 25 years old, has experience and would give us a big red zone target. I think it would be a damn good move.

Nope, that was Early Doucet if you are talking about the dropped 2 point conversion.

I'll allow Pioli to make these kinds of decisions, but from what you are saying, sounds like we should give them a draft pick for him and not allow Detroit or St. Loser a chance at him???

Local talk here has Long as grooming into an excellent slot receiver along the lines of the Stokeley/Welker varitey. Not that he is anywhere near the accomplishments of those two but working in that mold.
