<!-- LINKS TO RELATED PAGES BEGIN --><!-- LINKS TO RELATED PAGES END -->COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri sophomore quarterback Blaine Gabbert (http://www.mutigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/gabbert_blaine00.html) was named today as the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week, for his outstanding performance in last Saturday's 37-9 season-opening win against rival Illinois.
Gabbert, making his collegiate starting debut, completed 25-of-33 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns on the day, and he also added 39 rushing yards and an eight-yard score in the fourth quarter to give him 358 yards of offense in all. His passer rating of 186.96 was the top mark among any Big 12 Conference quarterback during the opening week of play.
The award marks the third straight time that a first-time starter at quarterback has come away with the Big 12 weekly offensive award for Mizzou. Gabbert's achievement follows in the footsteps of predecessors Brad Smith (http://www.mutigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/smith_brad01.html) and Chase Daniel (http://www.mutigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/daniel_chase00.html), who both also won the weekly award after their first career starts against Illinois (2002 - W, 33-20) and Murray State (2006 - W, 42-7), respectively. Here's a look at the comparison of those three stellar starting debuts...

Smith eventually won the weekly Big 12 award six times in his stellar career (2002-05), while Daniel equaled that same number during his three years as a starter (2006-08).
The Tigers open their 2009 home season this Saturday evening as they play host to the Bowling Green Falcons. Kickoff for the game is set for 6:07 p.m. at Faurot Field/Memorial Stadium, and tickets are available for purchase by calling 1-800-CAT-PAWS (884-PAWS in Columbia) or online at www.mutigers.com (http://ev9.evenue.net/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/SEGetEventInfo?ticketCode=GS%3AMISSOURI%3AF09%3A01%3A&linkID=missouri).

I thought he was a red shirt freshman?

Pinkel didn't redshirt him and he had 38 snaps last year

I wasn't expecting a lot from MU this season, but Gabbert looked great and the defense looked decent, even though Benn was out. I'm cautiously optimistic about this season.

Not a surprise. He played well in MU's romp over Illinois.

It's very possible he won't use up all his eligibility anyway.

It's very possible he won't use up all his eligibility anyway. If you think he's the real deal, then I could see playing him anyway. considering you are only getting 2 years out of the guy. If he's going to be a top 5 pick, why wait? Bradford may have had 30 million in his pocket but now....I bet he's going to take less money. How much did hot shot Mr. All american USC cost himself coming back?

Well deserved. I was impressed after watching the highlights of the game. Strong Arm. Quick decisions. I thought you guys might slip this year, but now think you may be even better than last year.

Who knows, it's still VERY early to even suggest this but with Bradford going down if Missouri can win the north (big IF) they could have their best chance of winning the conference this year. Like I said who knows though, still way too early to make any solid predictions.

It's Pinkel's MO. He did the same with Daniel.

Pinkel believes that getting the guy even a handful of snaps in game action is more important than the extra year of eligibility. I disagreed completely with Daniel as Daniel was going to be a 4-year starting QB for us if we didn't burn his redshirt.

Gabbert's a different story. He's gone after 2 seasons if he's as good as advertised, so you might as well get that freshman year out of the way to better prepare him for his Jr. and Soph. seasons.

In both cases, it's been pretty hard to argue with the results.

If Gabbert puts up daniel like #'s or close he's gone after his jr year anyway

Ill be surprised if he opts to go pro after just 2 full seasons of success in a non-pro style offense. It could change his draft stock anywhere from 2nd to 4th if he went this route. Smith/Daniel were smart to stay their senior year.

Gabbert's going to be under center quite a bit. It's not USC's offense, but it's not the 9 yard shotgun behind 5 yard wide splits like in 2007, either.

Assuming he has at least two "good" college seasons, there is absolutely no way he lasts beyond the middle of the first round.

I'll admit he impressed me against Illinois.

According to who?

Gabbert's going to run the same offense Daniel ran. I've heard nothing about Yost installing a 'pro' style set.

If Gabbert puts up Daniel #s, his physical tools will get him drafted in the 1st round, even out of the spread.

What he's got that daniels didn't: prototypical size.

That will push him up ahead of the 3rd, imo.
