View Full Version : Royals Grienke chasing Cy Young Award

Tonight. Grienke goes for his 15th win of the season and he's chasing the Cy Young Award in the process. I didn't see any Grienke love, but this would be huge for the organization if we end of with the CY Young Award winner. Let's hope he prevails. Mow 'em down tonight, kid.

If he gets the run support that they gave last night it should be no problem. It just seems like every time he is on the mound they can't score a run to save their lives.

Best reason to watch the Royals thus far this season.

Hope Greinke has an outstanding outing tonight. But it's complete bullshit that he has to justify his great season with one game against THE MIGHTY RED SOX.

Fuck Boston. Seriously.

I heard Peter Gammon said he won't win the Cy Young because he hasn't pitched against the Yankees or Red Sox. It doesn't matter that he 2-hit the Angels who had .300 hitters from 1 through 9 in the order. The media in NY and Boston won't allow Greinke to win the award. NY and Boston have perceptions to sell... and dumbasses that will buy.

Grienke has had what, like 5-6 losses where he's given up fewer than 3 runs. How pathetic the Royals can't fucking score enough to back him up. That's fucking sad. and I'm not even talking about the no decisions he's gotten throughout the season.

YUP!!! Look at his stats when he lost his first game.

It was against LAA, matchup against John Saunders (whose good in his own right, but not Grienke)

In 8 IP, he allowed only 4 hits, 1 run, and SO 5

Royals lost 1-0

Not even 1 god damn mother ****ing run.

Some consider it a form of cancer in the locker room. But I'd be bitching publicly about how this offense sucks and can't get any run support.

Like if he gets snubbed out of the award, I'd say something like "Hey just imagine how many wins I'd have if I had any run support around here - Haha"

That would be epic.

Somebody from the KCStar already did the research on it. History shows 17 Wins is the magic number he needs to get to.

If he gets to 17 and Sabathia has like 20, i think Zach will win.

If he has less than 17, then Sabathia will most likely win.

If Sabathia wins the Cy Young I will no longer acknowledge that the award even exists. Sabathia should have NO shot unless he just goes on a tear to end the season and lowers his ERA below 3.0. Why people beat off to wins is beyond me. It is outside of the pitchers control if they have AROD, Texiera, Jeter, Matsui, Cano, and that star studded line up.

I dont think there's enough time for him to blow it. He's got what, 1 start left this Sunday? Even if he went something like 1/3IP 6ER 3BB 0K, he'd still be the front-runner. It might get people talking though, but all he'd need is a mediocre 5IP 2R no-decision type of start and its over.

The Cy Young cases for Greinke and King Felix
Friday, September 18, 2009 | Feedback | Print Entry
This time of year, teams begin to include information in their media dispatches about their various candidates for major awards. The AL Cy Young Award is increasingly a two-horse race between the Royals' Zack Greinke and the Mariners' Felix Hernandez.

To see the cases for Greinke and Hernandez, plus tons of other news, free agency and injury updates, you must be an ESPN Insider.

This is what the Royals are highlighting about Greinke:

Zack Greinke
Category AL MLB
ERA 2.14 1st 1st
Shutouts 3 1st 1st
CG 6 2nd T-2nd
Strikeouts 224 2nd 3rd
Qual. Starts 24 2nd T-2nd
Wins 14 8th T-13th
Opp. BA .231 2nd T-10th
K's per 9 IP 9.58 3rd 6th
HRs per 9 IP 0.47 1st 5th
The Royals are 1-7 in Greinke's eight no-decisions, despite the fact that he has a 1.95 ERA in those starts (12 earned runs in 55 1/3 innings) and that he left with a lead on four occasions (4 blown saves). He has been shut out four times, three in losses and once in a no-decision. He has a 1.05 ERA in his 15 starts the club has won (14 wins for him) and an opponents batting average of .196 in those games. The club has scored 13 runs in his 8 losses (1.63 per game) and 30 runs in his 16 starts that have wound up a loss or no-decision (1.88 per game). He became the fourth major league pitcher since 1900 to follow a 15-strikeout game with a one-hitter, matching Vida Blue (1971), Randy Johnson (1998) and Pedro Martinez (1999). He will enter his final three starts 20 strikeouts shy of the club record of 244 set by Dennis Leonard in 1977.

Now, about Felix Hernandez, from the Seattle Mariners:

Overall, he is 15-5 with a 2.52 ERA (58 ER, 207 1/3 IP) in 30 starts (stats as of Sept. 17).
He leads all American League starters with 25 quality starts and has the lowest opponents batting average (.228).
He ranks second in the AL in ERA (2.52), T-3rd in starts (30), T-4th in wins (15), 4th in strikeouts (193), 5th in K/9.0 IP (8.38).
He is the only pitcher to rank in the top five in the AL in each of the three pitching "Triple Crown" categories (wins, ERA, K's).
He has recorded a quality start in 20 of his past 21 starts.
Since May 24, Hernandez is 11-1 with a 1.91 ERA (32 ER, 150 2/3 IP), 137-45 K-BB ratio and a .213 OPP AVG.
He leads the AL with seven starts of at least seven shutout innings.
With seven more strikeouts, and assuming he finishes with an ERA below 3.00, he will become just the second pitcher in club history to post a season of 200 IP, 200 K's, 15 wins and a sub-3.00 ERA ... Randy Johnson accomplished this in 1995 and 1997.
Greinke got hit by a line drive in Thursday's game in the fourth inning, but hung in there to get five more outs and pick up his 14th victory. He appears to be fine.

Coach
09-22-2009, 08:58 PM
.500 or better teams, Zack pitched 13 games, 6-5 record with a 1.25 ERA.

The closest is Hernandez with 21 with a 2.28 11-3 record.

What-if stat for the night: if the Royals had just gone 51-56 between May 7th and September 7th...they'd be in first place right now.1 minute ago from TweetDeck

"What if" should be the team's official motto.

Same shit year after year. "What if there wasn't the 15-game losing streak?" Well...let's counter that with, "What if our dumbass GM fielded a more talented roster?"

KC Royals: What if?

Seriously, I expect better from Rany. That's weak sauce.

The lowest OPS of any MLB regular who qualifies is Yuniesky Betancourt's .607. Zack Greinke's OPS-against, from the entire league, is .612.
I'm quoting this post because the stat therein is insane.

OPS? I don't know what that means. /Dayton Moore/

SC is Zack Greinke central right now, gammons says he's the front runner and its his to lose.

The royals better win every one of his starts

I'd say they should all go fuck themselves, but, frankly, the Royals and their fans should embrace any positive press that they get. Perhaps there can be some trickle-down benefits.

Rany is such a homer sometimes. That is like 66% of the season. What a dumb stat. If you suck you suck, and the Royals still suck. They could win out, and they would still suck.

Why did ESPN feel the need to create an ESPN Boston? They could have just saved the hassle and started another one called ESPN Everywhere Outside of the Boston/New York Vortex or something like that.

They are located in Connecticut. Id imagine, the first Regional ESPN, makes sense to be near the headquarters... to view and make changes to programming and shit.

Id like an ESPN Kansas City... that played classic games and shit of KC teams... and interviews with local players... that'd be cool.

Maybe depend if they want to pitch him on 3 days rest in a meaningless game.

That would be cool. 7O's and 80's Royals games. Chiefs from the Stram and Shottenheimer era. Tiny Archibald and the Kings. KU classic games. Danny Manning. Wilt. The current era.
That would be fun.

the twins are hardly in the red sox' league, hopefully grienke will get that cy young, in a decade of complete failures, him getting these last two wins and not getting the cy young would take the cake, if i believed in god i would pray for it
