OBAMA TO PITCH FOR OLYMPICS: A White House official confirms to CBS News that President Obama will head to Copenhagen, Denmark later this week to pitch Chicago as the site for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

"Valerie Jarrett told the Associated Press Monday morning that the president will leave Thursday and will join his wife, Michelle, and others in his administration, in making the pitch. Obama would be the first U.S. president to take on such a direct role in lobbying for an Olympics event.

"Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, both from Illinois, also are going. Chicago faces tough competition from Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo. Heads of state representing Rio and Madrid are also expected to attend the Copenhagen meeting."

"The White House, which earlier had announced that an advance team was headed to Copenhagen to prepare for a possible presidential trip to Copenhagen, confirmed this morning that Obama will travel Thursday night. The [International Olympic Committee] meets Friday," adds the Chicago Tribune's Mark Silva.

"A senior administration official told the Tribune Washington Bureau this morning that Obama will travel to Copenhagen Thursday night, and return following the Friday meeting. Promoters of Chicago's bid for the 2016 games have pressed the president to take the United States' case personally."

This is very important..lol

sorry pal but the world doesn't stop revolving because of our economic issues. Air force one is just as good as office as anywhere else. It's not like its a vacation.

And I would say taking out 3 terror plots in a week is keeping us safe....but he had nothing to do with it, right? What if those plots hadn't been stopped? His fault then though, right?

He needs to be the first American President to preside over the UN Security Council (when it's the US's turn, it's always been the Ambassador to the UN, NEVER the President himself). Now he needs to be the first US President to travel abroad to promote the fuggin' Chicago site for the Olympics...now, what are you all going to say if he fails and they go to Rio instead?? Frankly I hope it blows up in his face. Maybe then he'll actually try to solve some of our problems.

Total attention whore. Imagine the money they are spending just on this friggin' needless trip, just so he can get off an airplane to a rousing chorus of cheers in Denmark.

Three months from when? Has he not been in office since January? Has he not known about the appt since Nov? He has met with McKrystal once, once!

I am glad you are okay with it, I tell you what I will give you my son's phone number, he goes in less than 3 weeks. Call and tell him he can wait to see if he gets help. Tell him you and the POTUS know best what is good for him.

Why would you want to support the majority in Iran, anyway? Didn't they just overwhelmingly re-elect a guy who has promised genocide against the Jews? Hooray Iran! We support you (even if we have to pretend that most of you didn't really vote for the guy who won in a landslide)! Solidarity! Green letters! Yay!

Are you guys friggen serious? A president wants to pitch the USA for the olympics and you have a serious problem with that? God, how stupid.

I didnt vote for him, but this thread is filled to the brim with idiocy. I wouldnt have had a problem if Reagan, Clinton, or either Bush would have devoted a few hours to this, and I dont give a rat's ass if the host city loses money, thats their problem not ours.

A lot of people on the right are becoming EXACTLY what they hated for 8 years. We had to put up with crazy crap from the left about how stupid GWB is, he knew about or didnt care about 9/11, no blood for oil, etc. Now we have basically the same thing with Obama. He couldn't possibly be a normal fairly intelligent guy who decided to become a politician for a lot less money than what he could have earned, doing what he believes in. He's not a random politician on the left who I just happen to have a philosophical disagreement with on almost every economic issue but otherwise a decent guy, no not at all, he's arrogant, a socialist, has evil intentions for children, this is HIS recession (which is just incredibly stupid), wants to get the olympics just to pay back his Chicago buddies, just a big pile of stupid like I would have expected to hear from the left over Bush.

Some of you may think that its only fair and now its your turn. All I see is that, regardless of whether I may happen to politically agree or not, many on the right are simply no better than the left-wing crazies. They are just insane nutbags of a different flavor. Being anti-Obama not for any reasoned philosophical reason, but just because he's on the other team so I'll dig up and throw any crazy crap I can and hope some of it sticks, it has almost become sort of a religion to these people.

I wouldnt be surprised, if not a guarantee then at least a pretty good idea.

If I am the president and I did not think a pitch had a reasonable chance of success, then I shouldn't waste my time with it. The president should also not go if its already "in the bag", but this one looks close. A lot of people think Rio should get it.
