Michelle Obama: It's a 'sacrifice' to travel to Europe to pitch for the Olympics. But I'm doing it for the kids.

In her speech in Copenhagen today, First Lady Michelle Obama said her trip to Denmark, along with the travel of her "dear friend" and "chit-chat buddy" Oprah Winfrey, as well as tomorrow's visit by President Obama, is a "sacrifice" on behalf of the children of Chicago and the United States. "As much of a sacrifice as people say this is for me or Oprah or the president to come for these few days," the first lady told a crowd of people involved in the Chicago project, "so many of you in this room have been working for years to bring this bid home."
"As first lady, as many of you know, I’ve made it a priority to bridge the gap between the White House and communities across D.C. and across the country," Mrs. Obama continued. "I’ve spent much of my first nine months trying to open the doors to the White House to kids who might not otherwise see themselves having access to these institutions, because that’s where I came from – communities like that where kids never dreamed that they could set foot in the White House, let alone live there…And Barack and I made a point of doing the same thing when we lived in Chicago – making the concerns of kids in all sorts of communities our own."
Mrs. Obama said bringing the Olympics to Chicago is especially important right now because "athletics is becoming more of a fleeting opportunity." "Funds dry up so it becomes harder for kids to engage in sports, to learn how to swim, to even ride a bike," she said. In addition, with childhood obesity on the rise, "it is so important for us to raise up the platform of fitness and competition and fair play," the first lady said.
Finally, having the Olympics in Chicago would be important to "let people know that we understand that sports saves lives, that it makes dreams come true, that it creates visions in kids’ heads to make them think they can be the next David Robinson, the next Barack Obama, the next Nadia Comaneci, the next Oprah Winfrey," Mrs. Obama said.

WTF does Oprah have anything to do with the Olympics? And does the rest of the world even give a shit about Oprah? I would go as fas as saying many people over seas don't know who Oprah is.
It's women who watch Oprah, and it's the Mens games that everyone really cares about.
I know she's using her celeb status to make a pitch for Chi-town being the site for the games, but I just don't see the connection or how she's relevant to all of this.

It's a sacrifice for her to leave the country she recently became proud of. She's been very busy working with Katie Couric and Oprah to orchestrate publicity for the big Obama Thanksgiving and Christmas specials. She's been practicing her serious face for the predetermined "tough" questions during the sit-down portion of the interviews. So far she's leaning toward this scenario:
Katie: Michelle (a pause) do you think the criticism of your husband is racial?
Michelle: (a pause, a sigh, a shift in the chair followed by a little wry smile as she glances at her husband) I'd like to say, "no". But I'm sure some of that is going on.
It takes time to rehearse these moments ahead of time. Don't you understand this sacrifice she's making?

Chicago COMPETED and WON the right to represent the U.S. in this round of bidding.
Some know-nothing idiots like Malkin will try to tell you otherwise.
WASHINGTON -- Chicago today won the right to represent the United States in competition for the Olympic Summer Games of 2016.
April 14, 2007
United States Olympic Committee Chairman Peter Ueberroth made the announcement here just before 3:15 p.m., following a dramatic opening of a sealed envelope containing the final vote of the USOC committee.
“It was a very tough decision,” Ueberroth said before opening the envelope. “If I had all the power — and sometimes people accuse me of that — I would take the map and merge the two cities, because I’ll tell you what: If you could take the mayors of these two communities and have them run our country, we would all be better off.’’
Chicago was chosen over Los Angeles to be the U.S. host city for the 2016 Olympics.

A “very nervous” Mayor Daley was on hand for the announcement.
“I jumped right out of the seat,” the mayor said of his reaction after the announcement. “I was like a little kid watching the Olympics.”
Next up: a 2009 vote by the International Olympic Committee, which will choose among a host of cities that could include Rio de Janiero, Madrid and Tokyo.
The USOC board voted to support Chicago’s bid over a plan presented by Los Angeles.

White House Calls Out Fox And Glenn Beck On Olympics
Huffington Post | Elyse Siegel
First Posted: 09-30-09 05:36 PM | Updated: 10- 1-09 12:07 PM
In a new post on the official White House blog, Online Programs Director Jesse Lee calls out Fox News for perpetuating lies about President Obama's push to bring the Olympics to the city of Chicago.
Lee writes that Fox News, and in particular Glenn Beck, continues to ignore the facts "in an attempt to smear the Administration's efforts to win the Olympics for the United States."
The White House blog post continues to delineate what it deems misleading rhetoric on Obama's Olympics efforts. An example:
RHETORIC: BECK SAID VANCOUVER LOST $1 BILLION WHEN IT "HAD THE OLYMPICS." Glenn Beck said, "Vancouver lost, how much was it? they lost a billion dollars when they had the Olympics." [Transcript, Glenn Beck Show, 9/29/09]
REALITY: VANCOUVER'S OLYMPICS WILL NOT TAKE PLACE UNTIL 2010. Vancouver will host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games from February 12 - 28, 2010 and March 12-21, 2010, respectively. [Vancouver2010.com, accessed 9/29/09]
The White House's pointed critique of Fox News and Beck culminates with the statement, "For even more Fox lies, check out the latest "Truth-O-Meter feature from Politifact," linking to a post on the latest ACORN conspiracy.

No it isn't. I have no idea what you're talking about. Just because your suffering from partisan delusion, don't paint me as something I'm not.
....
It means she's as out of touch with people as her husband claims Republicans are.
Yep, no partisanship there. You're just another CP "moderate."

What if Bush said the exact same thing, would you not find it a little out of context or distasteful? Try to apply some of that objectivity you preach.
But then, being completely wrong has never stopped you the thousands of prior times, so why should this one trouble you?

MO was talking to volunteers who've been pushing the Chicago Olympic effort, for years in many cases. This was a pep rally. Her speech opened:
Thank you, everybody. So, as my husband would say, we are fired up and ready to go in here. (Applause.) It's a good thing. Well, first let me begin by thanking my dear friend, my chit-chat buddy, Oprah Winfrey. She talks about me coming here without hesitation. This is a woman who's got a pretty busy schedule - taping shows, traveling across the globe, a woman with a full plate.
The White House's pointed critique of Fox News and Beck culminates with the statement, "For even more Fox lies, check out the latest "Truth-O-Meter feature from Politifact," linking to a post on the latest ACORN conspiracy.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/30/white-house-calls-out-fox_n_305428.html
It's incredible how stupid Obama and all his defenders really are....
On the show in question, Beck had been talking about both the Olympics which were hosted in Calgary, and the one yet to be hosted in Vancouver...He accidentally misspoke and transposed the two (that is, said Vancouver when he meant to say Calgary) when he made the comment in question, and the White House actually seized on this as a "lie"!...
What amateurish, desperate buffoons...

During Anderson's administration, officials realized that as the city expanded so must the recreation facilities. Parks and Recreation became a city department in 1971, although the parks superintendent and his assistant were employed on a part-time basis. The rest of the recreation staff worked without compensation. The new department also continued to rely heavily on university facilities. In order to insure future recreational areas, the council included mandatory park land dedications in the Subdivision Ordinance. According to the ordinance, developers were required to donate a portion of their land for park sites. Acreage was based on the number of units they constructed, or they could give the city the cash equivalent. This principle of mandatory park land dedication was later challenged through the court system and was successfully upheld by a Texas Supreme Court decision in 1985.
The Council made substantial progress during the early 1970's in establishing a long awaited municipal park which would have facilities for swimming. College Station officials learned, that beginning in the summer of 1973, its residents could no longer use the Texas A&M pool. It became imperative that the city develop the proposed park. In 1973, William Fitch donated sixteen additional acres to the selected park site, and the Federal Bureau of Outdoor Recreation approved a matching grant of $132,500 for development of a pool. The city hired J.W. Wood as architect-engineer for the project. Although the budget would not allow all requested amenities to be constructed, residents soon enjoyed the availability of an Olympic-size swimming pool in their community. College Station's first aquatic facility opened in Bee Creek Park on October 5,1974. It was later named Adamson Municipal Pool in honor of Art Adamson, long time swimming instructor at Texas A&M University.

Just for you I looked it up.
"The Luick swimming pool was originally built in 1957 and opened in 1958 as a result of a generous donation from local resident and philanthropist Chester P. Luick. Mr. Luick donated a significant portion of the funds needed to build the community’s first pool. A number of volunteers labored for weeks on the construction of the pool.
A renovation was completed in 1995 when the city replaced the gutter and filter system and added a slide – which was one of the first slides in North Iowa. The city began another renovation and expansion program in the spring of 2007 by repairing and repainting the bottom of the pool. Following the closing of the pool in August 2007, the expansion project began to put a zero depth entry at the northwest side of the pool. Amenities will be added to the pool in the coming years. These future improvements will include: a children’s activity unit, drop slide, geysers, etc."
I guess some of the renovations were provided by the city so I suppose you're right in that regard.

Long before Presidentt Barack Obama made national headlines, Michelle Robinson was a shining star herself.
However, despite her impressive character and intelligence, Michelle chose a life outside of society's limelight.
Her impressive resume, combined with her history-making husband, has transformed her life from the preferred shadows to the attention of the world.
Standing Out
Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama was born Jan. 17, 1964, on Chicago's South Side to Frasier and Marian Robinson.
Frasier was a city pump operator and a Democratic precinct captain, and Marian worked as a Spiegel's catalog store secretary as they started their life together.
As a family, they lived in a one-bedroom apartment where Michelle shared a bedroom -- the living room with a curtain divider -- with her brother, Craig Robinson, who is 16 months her senior.
Early on in life, Michelle stood out among the crowd.
"As far back as any of us can remember, she was very bright," Craig Robinson told Newsweek.
Michelle skipped second grade and eventually joined a gifted sixth-grade class at Bouchet Elementary School, where she graduated as class salutatorian. Then she went on to Kennedy King College, where Michelle took two years of special biology classes. Classwork included studying photosynthesis, working in a laboratory and identifying the muscles of dissected rat specimens, recalled childhood friend Chiaka Davis Patterson.
