Well, the speeches they gave didn't really talk about why Chicago is a great place, rather it was about how the Obama's would really like them in Chicago. they are so "me, me, I, I" they can't friggin' talk about the greatness of America, or why Chicago is a fantastic place, they spent more time talking about their personal narrative. It's just who they are.

Like any big city, there are dangerous areas in Chicago, it's unavoidable. And there has been a rash of kids getting shot in the last year in the rougher areas, which sucks.
However, like any big city, as long as you know which areas to stay out of, Chicago is a great place.
What has become a myth is how dangerous Cabrini Green is. That area, while still containing some housing projects, is nowhere near as bad as it used to and they have actually built very nice homes there as well. I am sure Frazod knows a lot more about this than I do. Stay out of parts of the southside and parts of the westside and you should be good.

I slept in my car one night around North and Halstead (circa 1990). That was a risky proposition, seeing how the hoods from Cabrini Green use to control that area - especially after dark.

No doubt about that back then. However, I believe it is a lot safer than it used to be, although I still wouldn't walk around there whistling dixie at night.
The movie Candyman didn't help things back in the 90s as I believe that was set up in Cabrini Green and made to look especially awful, given it was a horror movie.

Yea, and instead of keeping the riff-raff in one area like it was (speaking about Cabrini that is), they spread it out all over the city.
So stay out of the west side, the south side and Cabrini is on the north side so that gives you what, the Loop??? Lincoln Park?

Try looking at a map, still a shitload of terrain in the city and all the surrounding suburbs. And Cabrini never was the worst area, that was the Robert Taylor homes over by Comiskey. It was so bad paramedics wouldn't even go into the towers. Thankfully those have been ripped down.

I meant Rio, but I appreciate the response because I don't have that great a knowledge of Chicago either. Good Times was supposed to sort of be set in Cabrini Green, I think, wasn't it? On the grid, Wrigley is at around 1000 West. The city extends out as far as 6000 or 7000 West up there, which is about 6 to 8 miles, so in the grand scheme of things, Wrigley is pretty far east. If you are looking at Wrigleville in general, Wrigley is smack in the middle and the neighborhood extends a couple miles to the west of the stadium.

Yeah, he would have politically benefitted from success here, but America would have gained with him.
I agree. I wanted the Olypics here and didn't care which city or state (except Colorado). I chalk it up to Obama failed us. But what else is new?

I don't really see the big deal. Just another fail in a presidency that consists entirely of FAIL so far.
Has a president ever so openly campaigned for it? The fact that he was snubbed is certainly embarrassing. Especially given his groveling before the world.
The bidding processed has changed. All 4 of the finalist's sent their heads of states or Presidents to the final vote. Putin has done it for Russia, the prime minister of England did it for London.

reading up a bit on analysis, this could have less to do with Obama and more to do with some bitterness towards the USOC.
Q: Obama aside, what do you think were the primary reasons for such a dramatic rejection -- the first city/country to be voted out?
A: I think it is the battle over TV money, personally. The IOC wants a bigger piece of the U.S. network deal. Then the USOC foolishly declared it would start its own Olympic network with Comcast, showing trials, etc. That ENRAGED the IOC, to put it mildly.
It could just be that disputes over money had doomed the Chicago bid to the point where nothing could have saved it.

But they set themselves up for this harassment. The POTUS decision to fly to Denmark while we have people in Afghanistan dying and he waffles on whether to give them the help they requested.
His wife brings a television star on a private flight and has the nerve to use "sacrifice" in the language describing the trip.

Oprah was certainly over the top and not justified, but I don't see any issue with Michelle going there ahead of time, particularly since Barack couldn't spend much of his own time there to make the right connections with the people they had to.

"I think there's certainly some tension between the IOC and the USOC," said Carson Cunningham, a history instructor at DePaul University in Chicago who teaches a course on the modern Olympics. He said the U.S. Olympic Committee got the most TV revenue and inspired jealously among its peers.
Of Chicago's loss, Cunningham said: "Obviously, it's become a political football, and people are going to use it as such. But if you really want to analyze why Chicago lost, it gets a lot more nuanced. Blaming this loss on President Obama's support of the bid, I think, is misleading."

Bush Backs Atlanta's Bid to Host 1996 Olympic Games
April 02, 1990
ATLANTA — President Bush today made a pitch for Atlanta to host the 1996 Summer Olympics and promised not to let politics intrude.
Bush, after addressing a broadcasters convention, visited a scale-model exhibit of proposed and existing sport facilities that the Atlanta Organizing Committee is using in its bid to win the Games

President Bush Meets with Chicago 2016 Bid Committee and United States Olympic Committee Members
Union League Club of Chicago
Chicago, Illinois
11:35 A.M. CST
THE PRESIDENT: I want to thank the members of the 2016 Chicago bid to get the Olympics. Listen, Mr. Mayor, you and your committee have put together a great plan. It's a plan that will make America proud.
They say that the Olympics will come to Chicago if we're fortunate enough to be selected, but really it's coming to America, and I can't think of a better city to represent the United States than Chicago.
This is a well thought out venue. There will be -- the athletes will be taken care of. People who will be coming from around the world will find this good city has got fantastic accommodations, great restaurants. It will be safe.
And so I -- this country supports your bid, strongly. And our hope is that the judges will take a good look at Chicago and select Chicago for the 2016 Olympics.
Thank you all.

You're wrong, the 24 hour news cycle forces the conservative outlets to come up with somethine every day if possible against Obama. They'd have found a way to blame him for not making the bid, likely in the ways I mentioned already, or "Bush Sr. and jr. weren't too good to do it".

Mr. & Mrs. O: "The USA has hosted only 4 of the last 15 summer/winter games. It is an outrage that another non-USA city is yet again getting serious consideration. An outrage, we say to you."

Do you want me to embed a video that you cant watch so you can see it?
LMAO I'm past that now. I've got satellite broadband (which costs too much and kind of sucks, but at least is better than dialup) so I can watch videos now!

Former IOC member Kai Holm said that the brevity of his appearance may have counted against him.
The short stopover was "too business-like," Holm said. "It can be that some IOC members see it as a lack of respect."
Aloof? Arrogant?
I agree. The IOC has been an overblown, aloof, arrogant and corrupt money pit since the days of when Juan Antonio Samaranch demanded he be addressed as "his Excellency" and allowed .5 million a year for rental of a suite in Switzerland for their HQ.
The entire process is a joke. The Olympics aren't about sport or amateurism. They are about Coke and Nike and marketing and the chance to be on a Wheaties box.
And honestly, if this country never hosts another Olympic games, it will not matter to me in the least.

Honestly, I don't see the big deal here, other than disappointment for Chicago. Seems to me Obama did what he could. I really don't see how this makes a blip on his approval rating. Seems a little odd to me that Republicans are dancing in the streets over the Olympics not coming to a great American city.
Because absolutely everything, EVERYTHING Obama does has to be wrong.

I know now that the POTUS has been involved in the process before, but we've still never had a POTUS act as a supplicant rather than a host, until now.

Sounds like Bush met with the US folks and gave them 3 paragraphs...But he never piched the IOC in a setting or with the fanfare that O did with the hoopla and all that.

It seems odd to me that people keep saying that. I haven't seen it. But then, I don't get cable/satellite TV so maybe I'm missing something.

And every conservative blog is blowing up over it. Kind of hard to find any opinion source where conservatives aren't trying to play it up as some huge failure for Obama.
Malkin's blog has probably the pic of the day...believe me when I say this wasn't posted in a way that expressed sympathy...(gotta admit this one was funny.)

Criticizing Obama for his role and for the result is far different than cheering for Chicago's loss.

All ribbing aside, I can't believe the thinking behind why Obama would fly all the way to Denmark just for the end of the presentation.
From a political POV it was maybe the dumbest thing I've seen Obama do. With the beating he's taking over his agenda why in the world would you stick your neck out like that?
Terrible over reach politically.

Seriously, can anyone really have that much of an ego?
But my point was isn't there anyone coaching him on his political moves? Shouldn't someone have said.....uh, you might want to stay home and let Michele schmooz the crowd instead of sticking your neck out?
