Hindsight is 20/20 but he's still very popular around the world and actually has the street cred of being an international stateman. Plus there would have been less perception of an epic fail for the current POTUS.

probably not. All four bids sent a top leader or head of state. Hell, Spain even sent their king. (We still have kings? wtf)
I'm thinking if we sent the B team, people in the IOC would have looked at Bill and asked "why are you here instead of Obama?" These days you probably have to go big or go home with IOC bids.

This rejection is more about what happened in the last 8 years than what happened in the last 8 months.

Actually, I think it might have been more what happened in the last 8 days rather than months or years.
Flat presentation with boring video compiled with worldwide headlines of the beating of the honor student combined with increased uncertainty regarding the financial situation in the US and international relations and the US.

I do think Bill would have done better, but I doubt he would lower himself to something like this. Say what you will about him and his behavior in the past, but he still appears presidential everywhere he goes, to speaking engagements and in interviews. He's busying himself with one-off projects like that North Korea thing. He's more presidential than our current president is.

He's got very little political capital with anyone right now. I don't think he's even a fraction as influential around the world as his ego believes he is.
