View Full Version : Nat'l Security Actions vs. Words = Reagan and Israel
Many have cited the bombings of our troops in Lebanon as reason to attack Iran. In fact, some suggest that Reagan had the same ideas about the Middle East as W did. Truth be told Reagan's biggest error was trying to "avenge" the Iranian hostage situation by supporting Saddam.

"U.S. President Ronald Reagan called the attack a "despicable act" and pledged to keep a military force in Lebanon. Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, who had privately advised the administration against ever having stationed U.S. Marines in Lebanon,[14] said there would be no change in the U.S.'s Lebanon policy"
OK...
"Hezbollah denied involvement in the attacks"
"In retaliation for the attacks, France launched an airstrike in the Beqaa Valley against alleged Islamic Revolutionary Guards positions. President Reagan assembled his national security team and planned to target the Sheik Abdullah barracks in Baalbek, Lebanon, which housed Iranian Revolutionary Guards believed to be training Hezbollah fighters.[15] A joint American-French air assault on the camp where the bombing was planned was also approved by Reagan and Mitterrand. Defense Secretary Weinberger, however, lobbied successfully against the missions.
In fact, there was no serious retaliation for the Beirut bombing from the Americans,[16] besides a few shellings."
"The Marines were moved offshore where they could not be targeted. On February 7, 1984, President Reagan ordered the Marines to begin withdrawal from Lebanon. This was completed on February 26, four months after the barracks bombing; the rest of the Multinational Force was withdrawn by April."
Got that. Lip service followed by withdrawl. Thank God for Cap Weinberger.
"Weinberger's paternal grandparents had left Judaism because of a dispute at a Czech synagogue. His stepmother[citation needed] was of Christian heritage."

"The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'" compared to W/Cheney "govt kept us safe" from precisely nothing
"History teaches that wars begin when governments believe the price of aggression is cheap." compared to W's "I'm a war President."
"We must not look to government to solve our problems. Government is the problem." compared to W's "compassion = big spending"

" While Reagan was indeed a great friend of Israel, his administration also engaged in the most public rebukes of Israel."
"he never visited the Jewish state"
" At the same time, however, he also significantly strengthened the Arabs by selling them some of America's most sophisticated weapons. In 1981, Reagan successfully overcame the Israeli lobby's opposition to his proposed sale of AWACS radar planes to Saudi Arabia"
" It was cast as Reagan versus Israeli Prime Minister Begin, and the President did not hide his distaste for the Israeli leader. " ... in part because the "ISraeli lobby" in the US hated Reagan.
"Also in 1981, Israel bombed the Iraqi reactor at Osirak. Reagan was furious and the U.S. supported the UN Security Council resolution condemning Israel. "
"After Israel annexed the Golan Heights in 1981, Reagan suspended the strategic cooperation agreement prompting Begin to accuse Reagan of treating Israel like a "banana republic.""
"When Israel decided to launch Operation Peace for Galilee, Reagan was initially supportive, but he gradually soured on the Israeli operation as it dragged on and drew U.S. forces into the Lebanese quagmire. In August 1982, Reagan gave Yasser Arafat and the PLO leadership protection from Israel and allowed them to go into exile in Tunis. More significantly, in December 1988, Reagan authorized the State Department to enter into a dialogue with the PLO, reversing the U.S. policy of refusing to recognize the terrorist organization"

Bush Sr's administration rebuked Israel privately through Baker. He admonished them asking them if they really wanted peace or not. Or said something like "get back to us when you're serious about peace."
There's extremists on both sides of that conflict with many in between. NCs side with the extremists.

http://newsweek.washingtonpost.com/postglobal/needtoknow/2009/03/freeze_israels_settlements_for.html
"From the earliest days of the peace process, it was clear that Israel's settlements would be one of the most contentious issues on the Israeli-Palestinian and Israeli domestic agendas. Conventional wisdom has held that serious Israeli action on settlements must be put off until a deal is ready to be signed. This is based on the logic that given the huge amount of political capital it will cost any Israeli government either to freeze settlements or to pursue peace, no Israeli government can do both at the same time. This logic has been advanced in Israel and in Washington since the time of Yitzhak Rabin, and has been largely accepted by every U.S. government since George H.W. Bush."

"President Reagan on Sept. 1 launched what he hoped would be a new diplomatic drive for a comprehensive peace between Israel and its Arab neighbors. He proposed that Israel cease all building of new settlements for Israelis in the Arab territories."
Prez Reagan on Settlements = Prez Obama on Settlements
and helps to explain why REAGANITES like Powell and myself support Obama's foreign policy in the Middle East vs. W's treason.
Hezbollah's denial of the attack in Lebanon really made it difficult to justify wide slaughter. The Hezbos usually take responsibility for such acts if they did them. They admit a lot of rocketing and other "terror against Israel" acts.
It was possible Hezbo did not hit the Marines.
Now, pondering who else might have done it goes to a very dark place in an area of the world famous for slaughter in dark places...
Pulling us out was the right call. It made the Joe Lieberman's of the "US" furious.

It's hilarious that you thought this tidbit was important in your OP. But no, you're not at all anti-semetic. You're just anti-zionist and you have no problem with the Jews. ROFL
Cap Weinberger understood that the Zionist lobby wants us to use our military to wipe out all of Israel's enemies.
Thank goodness he did. It is just a shame he wasn't part of W's administration, because we never would have hit Iraq...

If I were you, I'd like to think I'd be self-aware enough not to criticize anyone else's intellectual capacity.
