View Full Version : Royals Rumor: Greinke trade?????

Sorry if repost, but didn't see it when searching...

From 'Brew Crew Ball (http://www.brewcrewball.com/2009/10/18/1089992/rumorville-zack-greinke)' SB nation site:
Rambling Al stumbled upon a great Zack Greinke (http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/575/Zack_Greinke) rumor. Apparently, Zack is practically a Brewer right now (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/273811-zack-greinke-to-milwaukee-deal-all-but-done), having been traded for JJ Hardy, Mat Gamel, Angel Salome, and Manny Parra. The Brewers (http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/MIL) and Royals (http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/KAN) are just waiting for the WS to end before it can go through.
Needless to say, this is unsubstantiated. I'm wondering where the Badger Blogger is on this story, though. Covering the Zack Greinke trade rumors the way the Zack Greinke trade rumors fear!

Would be the dumbest thing Moore has done to date, and that's a pretty impressive statement.

If we are gonna trade Grienke, we better get a Grade A bat in return.

If you are trading Greinke, you better get Gamel, Escobar, and then have Milwaukee give you a sheet of paper with their top 15 prospects and say "Pick 4 more".

Rule number one.

You never ever ever ever trade a Ace pitcher, ESPECIALLY when he is about to enter his prime.

Never.

Gamel and Escobar are two of the best prospects in baseball. You better get both along with a lot more for this trade to even be close to "fair".

I realize this is just rumor, but I have to admit I have been expecting something like this. So just for the sake of it, who the heck are the four guys listed for the Brewers? Anything there, or is this another Beltran type scenario?

Gamel is their best hitting prospect. All bat, no glove third baseman. You'll need to move him to LF, IMO. He's a lefty bat with a short, compact stroke, and plus power.

Parra is an erratic SP who was shuttled between AAA and ML last year. He has great stuff, but erratic command, and is prone to implosions.

Hardy is an erratic SS who can hit, but is prone to long slumps. He's got above average power for the position, but he's not an especially adroit fielder, nor does he hit for a good average.

I don't know much about Salome.

Relax everybody. This will never happen. This is just a rumor started by a bunch of Brewers fans.

This rumor made the rounds here in Milwaukee last week and was totally debunked as garbage. I'd LOVE for us to take Grienke off your hands, but it ain't happenin'.

Spot on on both of those guys.

As for the other guys: Salome, he's supposedly our catcher of the future. Hardy was an all-star and can be good, but was awful last year. We've already moved on to our SS-of-the-future in Alcides Escobar.

If you're talking about trading Kyle Davies or Gil Meche or Luke Hochevar, then fine. To consider trading Greinke is seriously retarded.

Seriously.

I wanted the Braves to trade for him last offseason and I really thought they might...were some strong rumors in Braves fans circles.

No way does KC trade him now...no chance in hell IMO.

Greinke will be extremely valuable when the Royals make the playoffs...ie CC Sabathia with the Yankees.

Parra, Hardy, and Gamel are nothing. Those players arguably don't even represent upgrades over the currently entrenched players. There would have to be a huge missing piece to this for it to even begin to make any sense, like a Braun + more prospect value. Sounds like a blogger swapping baseball cards and nothing more.

It's very hard to work out a fair trade for a player that valuable. It would take so much that it's easy for either side to get hosed. But while the Royals have 3 more years of his rights, there's no reason whatsoever to trade him. It doesn't make sense on any level.

A) Wild1 is high.

Parra would be the most talented SP the Royals had if this deal went through, Hardy would be the best position player they have and Gamel would be their 2nd best pure hitter behind Butler, but could easily surpass him in a couple of years.

B) That said, the deal will absolutely never happen. Parra's stuff has regressed and his command his pretty awful. His career WHIP is 1.65 (!) and his K/BB ratio keeps dropping. I liked him more 2 seasons ago than I do now; he seems injured. Hardy will likely be non-tendered as the Brewers have clearly decided to move on and won't be willing to pay for him in arbitration. Gamel is a fine prospect but has no real position. Then there's the underwhelming performance of LaPorta at the big league level. LaPorta was considered a better prospect than Gamel and he's been extremely disappointing for Cleveland. How much of their status as premier prospects was just very good hype/PR from the Brewer front office?

C) Trading Greinke wouldn't actually be completely insane for KC. #1 SPs are the most coveted commodity in the game...provided you have a playoff team. Otherwise he's just a guy that starts 35 times a year. Ace pitchers are vital for a short series but not critical for a rebuilding squad, IMO. If the Royals could deal Greinke for a "Bartolo Colon" package (Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips) they'd obviously be well ahead. When you consider how far away from competing they really are, it may be worth that gamble.

If I'm KC I call up the Rangers and see if they'd send me Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz, Derek Holland and Max Ramirez/Justin Smoak.

Tom Hicks has been hunting for an ace starter for so long, he might actually do it.

Anyone, and I mean anyone including the OP, everybody saying "wtf please no", etc, who seriously considered for a nanosecond that this was even a valid possibility to discuss, is simply ignorant.

Folks, this is along the lines of people who say the world is ending in 2012 or claimed to be kidnapped and anal probed by aliens. When you see silly crap like this, the appropriate response is to laugh and ignore it.

Different GM, different situation. This is still "aliens-are-invading-earth" absurd to talk about.

Beltran, Damon, etc were pretty good and all. Greinke isnt even in the same galaxy, much less the same ballpark. Trading away good batters can be smart if the GM isnt a dumbass and you think you can get someone to overpay. The reason is that good hitters who leave shouldnt be hard to replace (again when the GM isnt a moron).

Trading the best pitcher in baseball is not even an option because they can not be replaced.
